Chinese Journal of School Health 2025;46(9):1232-1236
Objective:
To explore the association between mental health and muscle strength among Chinese adolescents aged 13- 18, providing a theoretical foundation and intervention strategies for mental health promotion.
Methods:
Data were obtained from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students Constitution and Health, including 98 631 Chinese adolescents aged 13- 18. Psychological distress was assessed by using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), and mental well being was measured with the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well being Scale (WEMWBS). Based on the gender and age specific Z scores of various test items [grip strength, standing long jump, pull ups (for males), and sit ups (for females)], muscle strength index (MSI) was constructed to evaluate the comprehensive level of muscle strength in adolescents. According to the Dual factor Model (DFM) of mental health, participants were categorized into four groups:troubled, symptomatic but content, vulnerable, and complete mental health. Gender differences were analyzed by using Chi-square tests, trends were tested with Cochran-Armitage tests, and multinomial Logistic regression models were applied to assess associations between muscle strength and mental health among adolescents.
Results:
In 2019, 37.4% of Chinese adolescents aged 13-18 were reported of high mental distress, and 59.9% were reported of low mental well being. Boys had significantly lower rates of high mental distress (35.3%) and low mental well being (55.6%) compared to girls (39.4%, 64.3%), and the differences were of statistical significance ( χ 2=176.13, 780.42, both P <0.05). In 2019, the rate of complete mental health among adolescents showed a downward trend with increasing age ( χ 2 trend = 258.47) and a gradual upward trend with increasing muscle strength levels ( χ 2 trend =123.14),and both boys and girls exhibited similar trends ( χ 2 trend =103.83, 168.46; 57.00 , 67.34) (all P <0.05). The results of the unordered multiclass Logistic regression model showed that after controlling for confounding factors such as age and gender, when the completely pathological group as a reference, for every 1 unit increase in MSI in adolescents, the likelihood of being in a completely mental health state increased by 29% ( OR = 1.29); for every unit increase in the Z-score for pull ups, the likelihood of being in a completely mental health state increased by 6% ( OR =1.06) among boys; for every 1 unit increase in sit up Z score, the likelihood of being in a completely mental health state increased by 19% ( OR =1.19) among girls (all P <0.05).
Conclusions
The mental health status of Chinese adolescents is not good enough. Muscle strength is positively associated with mental health.

Intestinal aging is central to systemic aging, characterized by a progressive decline in intestinal structure and function. The core mechanisms involve dysregulation of epithelial cell renewal and gut microbiota dysbiosis. In addition to previous results in model organisms like Drosophila melanogaster, recent studies have shown that in mammalian models, aging causes increased intestinal permeability and intestinal-derived systemic inflammation, thereby affecting longevity. Therefore, anti-intestinal aging can be an important strategy for reducing frailty and promoting longevity. There are three key gaps remaining in the study of intestinal aging: (1) overemphasis on aging-related diseases rather than the primary aging mechanisms; (2) lack of specific drugs or treatments to prevent or treat intestinal aging; (3) limited aging-specific dysbiosis research. In this review, the basic structures and renewal mechanisms of intestinal epithelium, and mechanisms and potential therapies for intestinal aging are discussed to advance understanding of the causes, consequences, and treatments of age-related intestinal dysfunction.

Objective:To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Weinan City, Shaanxi Province, and study the predictive effect of the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model. Methods:Relevant information on HFRS cases reported by the China Disease Prevention and Control Information System from January 2010 to August 2024 in Weinan City, as well as the epidemiological investigation data on clinical diagnosis and confirmed HFRS cases in Weinan City were collected. Epidemiological characteristics of HFRS were analyzed by descriptive epidemiological methods. At the same time, a SARIMA model was constructed based on the monthly incidence of HFRS from 2010 to 2023, the incidence of HFRS from January to August 2024 was used to test the simulation prediction effect, and the optimal model was used to predict the incidence of HFRS from September to December 2024.Results:A total of 4 373 HFRS cases were reported in Weinan City from 2010 to 2023, with an average annual incidence of 6.39/100 000. The incidence rate showed a cyclical fluctuation trend, reaching two peaks in 2012 (10.25/100 000) and 2021 (12.26/100 000), respectively. The incidence of HFRS presented a seasonal bimodal distribution, with the peak predominantly in autumn and winter (from October to January of the following year), accounting for 67.83% (2 966/4 373), and the peak in spring and summer (form May to July) accounting for 17.27% (755/4 373). HFRS cases were reported in all counties (cities and districts) of Weinan City, and the top 3 annual incidence rates were Huazhou District (17.84/100 000), Linwei District (16.10/100 000) and Huayin City (9.15/100 000). The age of onset was mainly concentrated in the age group of 15 - 59 years old, accounting for 68.31% (2 987/4 373). The male to female ratio was 2.96∶1.00 (3 268∶1 105). The main occupation was farmers, accounting for 82.07% (3 589/4 373). SARIMA (1, 0, 1) (2, 1, 1) 12 model was the optimal model for short-term prediction of HFRS incidence rate in Weinan City, and the residual difference was listed as white noise ( Q = 7.45, P = 0.878), the model could be used for disease prediction. The model was used to predict the incidence of HFRS from September to December 2024, and the predicted values of each month were 0.17/100 000, 0.59/100 000, 1.85/100 000 and 1.61/100 000, respectively. Conclusions:The epidemic range of HFRS in Weinan City is wide, and the incidence has obvious seasonality. The population are mainly males, young and middle-aged adults and farmers. The SARIMA (1, 0, 1) (2, 1, 1) 12 model constructed can be used for predicting the short-term incidence trend of HFRS in Weinan City.

Objective:To explore the efficacy and safety profile of tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) in the treatment of patients with decompensated hepatitis B cirrhosis. Methods:A two-way cohort study method was used to enroll patients with decompensated hepatitis B cirrhosis who visited four medical centers, including Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, from April 2021 to April 2024 and were treated with TAF and followed up for 48 weeks. The primary efficacy indicator was hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA seronegative conversion rate at 48-weeks, and the secondary efficacy indicator was alanine aminotransferase (ALT) return to normal rate at 48-weeks. Relevant safety indicators, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and clinical adverse outcomes were collected. Results:A total of 74 cases were included. Of these, 52 were males with an average age of (53.14 ± 9.15) years. Twenty-five and thirty-three cases completed 24 and 48 weeks of follow-up, respectively. The HBV DNA negative conversion rate was 96.97% (32/33), which was higher than the baseline of 58.1% (43/74) following 48 weeks of TAF treatment. The ALT return to normal rate was 72.73% (24/33), which was higher than the baseline of 47.30% (35/74); however, the renal function and blood lipid levels did not change significantly compared with the baseline level after completing 48 weeks of treatment (P>0.05). During the follow-up period, one case developed hepatocellular carcinoma, and no other adverse clinical outcomes, such as liver transplantation or death, were reported. Conclusion:TAF has a good efficacy and safety profile in the treatment of patients with decompensated hepatitis B cirrhosis.
