Backgrounds: Fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) is commonly used in colorectal cancer screening programs. Many studies have compared different FOBT methods, but the correlation between traditional red cell microscopy and FOBT remains unclear. Objectives: 1) To evaluate the rate of positive FOBT in patients with different disease groups; 2) To compare the sensitivity and specificity of red blood cells detection in fresh stool by microscopy technique and FOBT. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 120 patients from Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital who requested a stool test from 4/2021 to 4/2022. Fresh stool samples were examined for the presence of red blood cells using traditional microscopy and FOBT technique. Results: The overall positivity rate of FOBT was 20%, and in the group of gastrointestinal diseases (n = 24), clinical anemia (n = 21), hepatobiliary diseases (n = 26) and other diseases (n = 49), it was 37.5%, 23.8%, 11.5% and 14.3%, respectively. In comparison with the FOBT technique, microscopic RBC detection had a sensitivity of 33.3% and a specificity of 100%. Conclusions: A high rate of fecal occult blood tests was observed in patients with gastrointestinal disorders. Microscopic erythrocyte detection has low sensitivity and many disadvantages compared to the rapid test. This rapid test should be widely used in clinical practice to aid in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding

Balanophora laxiflora Hemsl. (Balanophoraceae) is a traditional medicinal plant with a diverse array of biological activities. In our exploration of new bioactive constituents from B. laxiflora, we isolated five compounds, including a new lignan, balanophorone (5), and four known phenolic compounds (1–4). The chemical structures of these compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS, and CD. In addition, we evaluated the effects of each of the isolates (1–5) on the messenger RNA expression levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages and cytotoxicity against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Compound 2 showed significant inhibition of LPS-induced COX-2 and TNF-α expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages, while compound 4 showed moderate cytotoxicity against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, with IC 50 values of 18.3 and 30.7 μM, respectively. No significant effects on the viability of normal mammary epithelial cells were observed.

This paper describes progress on formulating a national asbestos profile for the country of Vietnam. The Center of Asbestos Resource, Vietnam, formulated a National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health, with due reference to the International Labor Organization/World Health Organization National Asbestos Profile. The Center of Asbestos Resource was established by the Vietnamese Health Environment Management Agency and the National Institute of Labor Protection, with the support of the Australian Agency for International Development, as a coordinating point for asbestos-related issues in Vietnam. Under the National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health framework, the Center of Asbestos Resource succeeded in compiling relevant information for 15 of the 18 designated items outlined in the International Labor Organization/World Health Organization National Asbestos Profile, some overlaps of the information items notwithstanding. Today, Vietnam continues to import and use an average of more than 60,000 metric tons of raw asbestos per year. Information on asbestos-related diseases is limited, but the country has begun to diagnose mesothelioma cases, with the technical cooperation of Japan. As it stands, the National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health needs further work and updating. However, we envisage that the National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health will ultimately facilitate the smooth transition to an asbestos-free Vietnam.

6.Studying the changes of leukocyte, erythrocyte and bone-marrow of mice treated by gamma irradiation
Journal of Vietnamese Medicine 2005;0(2):22-25
Studying the effectiveness of irradiation on bone-marrow, the numbers of leukocyte, erythrocyte, hemoglobin of mice (25 normal mice and 35 mice treated by gamma irradiation with the dose of 600 rad/(100rad/day) (60 Co) showed that: Gamma irradiation reduced total of leucocytes, the number of different leucocytic (lymphocyte, granulocyte, mono and natural killer cells), the ratio of reticulocyte, number of mature erythrocyte and hemoglobin: Total of leucocytes (3,14 ± 1,58 in comparison with 13,45 ± 4,6); monocytes (0,05 ± 0,03 in comparison with 0,26 ± 0,13), lymphocytes (1,66 ± 0,36 in comparison with 6,34 ± 2,84). After gamma irradiation, the number of reticulocyte was 55%, mature erythrocyte was 73% and hemoglobin was 82%

7.To finish the technique of identificating HLA in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients
Journal of Practical Medicine 2004;471(1):25-26
By the technique of indirect immunofluoresceine using 18 diverse markers, in the hospital K- Ha Noi, study was performed to determine the capacity of foreign antigene expression of tumor cells in the cell surface making them identified by immunology system through HLA system on NPC < 75 years old age patients. This system played an essential role in the regulation and realization of immune response.

8.Changes in erythrocyte, leucocyte and platelet in people having frequent contact with chemicals
Journal of Vietnamese Medicine 2004;295(2):23-26
In this study, 48 long-term exposed people with polychemicals (the male/female ratio is 1/3, the age from 23 to 44): such as organic and iso-organic acids: benzene, toluene and their coequals were investigated. 17 normal people not exposed with polychemicals as the control group. Results were shown following: quantity of erythrocyte was lower than control group but not significantly. Leucocytes especially neutrophils reduced significantly (p<0.001). 15/48 cases (30%) appereared lymphoblast. There is no difference in platelet between studied group and control group

Journal of Vietnamese Medicine 2004;295(2):40-42
Study on 48 people, of whom 16 are male and 32 are female, from 23 to 44 years old. They were long exposed with poly-chemicals, such as organic and iso-organic acids: benzene, toluene and their coequals. The parameters have been used: phagocyte capablity and phagocyte index of neutrophils; E, rossett formed T cells. The results showed that: Phagocyte capability and phagocyte index of neutrophils decreased significantly comparing with control group (p<0.001)

10.Circulating immune-complexes in acute leprosy, chronic hepatitis, pharynx cancer and acute myelogenous leukemia
Journal of Vietnamese Medicine 2004;295(2):49-52
20 patients with acute leprosy, 12 patients with chronic hepatitis, 34 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia, 48 patients with pharynx cancer. 31 normal healthy persons in the control group. Immune-complexes were fixed quantity by 2 methods: precipitating the immune-complexes with PEG having molecular weight 6.10¬3 and better method. Immune-complexes (+) were identified on acute leprosy, chronic hepatitis and acute diseases with the ratio of positive differences depending on disease, stage and the character of applying technique
