Previous studies have identified two group-level processes, neural representations of interracial between-group difference and intraracial within-group similarity, that contribute to the racial categorization of faces. What remains unclear is how the brain tracks race-related information that varies across different faces as an individual-level neural process involved in race perception. In three studies, we recorded functional MRI signals when Chinese adults performed different tasks on morphed faces in which proportions of pixels contributing to perceived racial identity (Asian vs White) and expression (pain vs neutral) varied independently. We found that, during a pain expression judgment task, tracking other-race and same-race-related information in perceived faces recruited the ventral occipitotemporal cortices and medial prefrontal/anterior temporal cortices, respectively. However, neural tracking of race-related information tended to be weakened during explicit race judgments on perceived faces. During a donation task, the medial prefrontal activity also tracked race-related information that distinguished between two perceived faces for altruistic decision-making and encoded the Euclidean distance between the two faces that predicted decision-making speeds. Our findings revealed task-dependent neural mechanisms underlying the tracking of race-related information during face perception and altruistic decision-making.

Objective:To explore the effectiveness of digital management platform led by outpatient specialist nurses among patients with type 2 diabetes in outpatient settings. Methods:From March 2024 to March 2025, adult patients with type 2 diabetes who visited the Endocrinology Clinic at Peking Union Medical College Hospital were selected using convenience sampling. Patients were randomly assigned to the control group and intervention group using the random number table method. Patients in control group received routine education on type 2 diabetes during their clinic visits after enrollment. Intervention group was managed by nurses through a digital management platform, establishing long-term connections with patients. Based on the platform, nurses regularly provided patients with knowledge updates, promptly responded to patient inquiries, reviewed daily dietary records, monitored blood glucose data, conducted weekly telephone follow-ups, and scheduled regular clinic visits to precisely intervene in patients' lifestyles. The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and self-management behavior scores were compared between two groups of patients before and after three months of intervention. Results:A total of 46 patients were enrolled and completed the 3-month follow-up, including 25 in control group and 21 in intervention group. There were no statistically significant differences in HbA1c or self-management behavior scores between the two groups of patients before intervention ( P>0.05). At three months of intervention, the HbA1c reduction in intervention group was greater than that in control group, with a statistically significant difference ( P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Scale scores between the two groups ( P>0.05). The difference in changes in diabetic foot self-screening scores between intervention group and control group was statistically significant ( P<0.05) . Conclusions:Specialist nurse-led precision health care management utilizing digital platforms can improve HbA1c and enhance self-management behaviors for diabetic foot in patients with type 2 diabetes, which is expected to be promoted and applied in the outpatient management of diabetes patients.

Objective:To analyze the association of sedentary time and physical activity with the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in non-smoking women aged 40 years and above in Songjiang District, Shanghai. Methods:Based on a natural population-based cohort in Songjiang, a total of 18 707 non-smoking women who were aged 40 years and above and without COPD at baseline survey were enrolled in the study. Cox proportional risk regression model was used to analyze the associations of the duration of sedentary behavior, physical activity with the risk for COPD at baseline survey, and the hazard ratio ( HR) of risk for COPD and its 95% CI were calculated. Stratified analyses were performed based on age, BMI, history of respiratory diseases and so on. Sensitivity analyses were conducted by excluding the cases diagnosed with COPD within one year after the baseline survey. Results:As of March 31, 2024, a total of 691 new COPD cases had been recorded after a median follow-up time of 6.96 years with an incidence density of 53.22 per 10 000 person-years. After adjusting for relevant confounders, in the tertile subgroups of sedentary time, the risk for COPD reduced by 17% in the short sedentary time group compared with the long sedentary time group ( HR=0.83,95% CI:0.70-0.99). Compared with the low physical activity level and long sedentary time group, the risk for COPD reduced by 24% in the high physical activity level and short sedentary time group ( HR=0.76, 95% CI: 0.61-0.95) and by 23% in the low physical activity level and short sedentary time group ( HR=0.77, 95% CI: 0.60-0.97). Compared with the non-physical exercise and long sedentary time group, the risk for COPD reduced by 28% in the non-physical exercise and short sedentary time group ( HR=0.72, 95% CI: 0.60-0.87). These associations remained when the cases diagnosed with COPD within one year of the baseline survey were excluded. Conclusions:Increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary time have beneficial effects to prevent COPD in non-smoking women, and reducing sedentary time alone may also reduce the risk for COPD if increasing physical exercise or other physical activity is not possible.

Objective To propose a brain electrical phase prediction method based on long short-term memory network(LSTM)to improve the accuracy and robustness of phase synchronization prediction in transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS).Methods First,an LSTM consisting of an input layer,an LSTM layer,an ReLU activation layer,a fully connected layer and a regression layer was constructed to capture the EEG signal features through the synergistic action of input gates, forgetting gates and output gates.Second,eye-open resting-state EEG data from 30 healthy subjects were trained using the LSTM to obtain a predictive model for EEG signal and EEG phase prediction. Finally, the LSTM method and the traditional autoregressive(AR)method were compared in terms of the phase prediction errors at the overall and individual levels and the prediction performance for peaks and troughs.A regression model was used to explore the relationships between instantaneous EEG amplitude,signal-to-noise ratio and phase prediction error with the LSTM method. Results The LSTM method achieved a total phase prediction error of 0.04°±5.69°,which was lower than that of the traditional AR method(-3.36°±51.13°).For each subject, the LSTM method demonstrated superior phase prediction accuracy compared to the traditional AR method(P<0.001).The accuracy for predicting peaks(troughs)by the LSTM method(about 89%)was higher than that by the traditional AR method(about 10%).Unlike the traditional AR method, the LSTM method didnot result in linear relationships between instantaneous EEG amplitude,signal-to-noise ratio and phase prediction error, with Pvalues being 0.58 and 0.18,respectively.Conclusion The LSTM-based brain electrical phase prediction method shows high accuracy and robustness when used for EEG phase-synchronized TMS.[Chinese Medical Equipment Journal,2025,46(3):1-8]

OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of isorhamnetin on the development of gastric cancer through up-regulation of solute carrier family 25 member 25 antisense RNA 1(SLC25A25-AS1).METHODS Using BALB/c nude mice as the subjects, the xenograft tumor model was established by subcutaneously inoculating human gastric cancer MKN28 cells into the axillary region. The effects of low and high doses of isorhamnetin(20 and 40 mg/kg)on the tumor volume and mass in nude mice were investigated.MKN28 cells were selected and divided into control group, isorhamnetin group(70 μmol/L,similarly hereinafter),isorhamnetin+knocking down negative control group, isorhamnetin+knocking down SLC25A25-AS1 group, isorhamnetin+overexpression negative control group and isorhamnetin+overexpressing SLC25A25-AS1 group.Effects of knocking down/overexpressing SLC25A25-AS1 on viability, apoptosis, migration and invasion ability of isorhamnetin-treated cells were detected. After verifying the targeting relationships between microRNA-212-3p(miR-212-3p)and SLC25A25-AS1,as well as phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10(PTEN),the effects of knocking down/overexpressing SLC25A25-AS1 on the expression of miR-212-3p,PTEN mRNA,and PTEN protein in isorhamnetin-treated cells were investigated.RESULTS Compared with the model control group, tumor volume and mass of nude mice in the isorhamnetin low-dose and high-dose groups were reduced significantly, and the isorhamnetin high-dose group was significantly lower than the isorhamnetin low-dose group(P<0.05).miR-212-3p had targeting relationships with SLC25A25-AS1 and PTEN.Compared with the control group, the cell viability(intervened for 24,48 h),migration number, invasion number and miR-212-3p expression of cells in the isorhamnetin group, isorhamnetin+knocking down negative control group and isorhamnetin+overexpressing negative control group were significantly reduced or decreased or down-regulated,while the apoptosis rate,mRNA and protein expressions of PTEN were significantly increased or up-regulated(P<0.05).Compared with isorhamnetin group and isorhamnetin+knocking down negative control group, the cell viability, migration number, invasion number and miR-212-3p expression of cells in the isorhamnetin+knocking down SLC25A25-AS1 group were significantly increased or up-regulated,while the apoptosis rate,mRNA and protein expressions of PTEN were significantly reduced or down-regulated(P<0.05).Compared with isorhamnetin group and isorhamnetin+overexpressing negative control group, the cell viability, migration number, invasion number and miR-212-3p expression of cells in isorhamnetin+overexpressing SLC25A25-AS1 group were significantly reduced or decreased or down-regulated,while the apoptosis rate,PTEN mRNA and protein expressions were significantly increased or up-regulated(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS Isorhamnetin may inhibit the development of gastric cancer by up-regulating the expression of SLC25A25-AS1,down-regulating miR-212-3p,and up-regulating the expression of PTEN,which is a downstream target of miR-212-3p.
