1.Fibroblast growth factor-2 with a xenogenic bone substitute in the treatment of class III furcation in dogs

Achieving periodontal regeneration in class III furcation defects is challenging. Many studies have applied growth factors to periodontal defects, including fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), which demonstrate angiogenic activity and mitogenic ability. This study aimed to evaluate periodontal regeneration following the application of FGF-2 to deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) in surgically created supra-alveolar class III furcation defects of the mandibular premolars of beagles. The defects were divided into the control, DBBM, and FGF/DBBM groups. For the control group, only root planing was performed. For the DBBM group, only DBBM particles were implanted into the furcation. For the FGF/DBBM group, DBBM was soaked with 0.3% FGF-2 solution, and FGF-2/ DBBM was then positioned into the furcation. After 8 weeks, the dogs were euthanized. The micro-computed tomography analysis revealed that the changes in the bone volume of the furcation area were significantly greater in the FGF/DBBM group than in the DBBM group. In the histomorphometric analysis, the area of the newly formed bone was significantly greater in the FGF/DBBM group than in the DBBM or control group. The cementum extension was significantly longer in the FGF/DBBM or DBBM group than in the control group. The epithelial area was significantly less in the FGF/DBBM group than in the DBBM or control group. The application of FGF combined with DBBM to a class III defect enhanced the regeneration of periodontal tissues and increased the healing rate. This finding indicates that FGF-2 combined with DBBM can be applied to class III defects clinically.
2.Short-term Clinical Outcomes of Ranibizumab Biosimilar SB11 Therapy in Neovascular Age-related Macular Degeneration

Purpose:
To investigate the short-term outcomes of intravitreal injections of the ranibizumab biosimilar SB11 in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods:
This retrospective comparative study assessed changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) in patients diagnosed with neovascular AMD who received three monthly injections of SB11. The outcomes were compared to those of patients who received the same treatment using the ranibizumab originator. Within the SB11 group, comparisons were made between BCVA and CRT at diagnosis and after three injections. The proportion of patients with resolved subretinal fluid/intraretinal fluid was also evaluated.
Results:
The study included 46 eyes. In the SB11 group (n = 23), the average BCVA improved significantly from a baseline of logarithm of minimal angle of resolution 0.54 ± 0.42 to 0.40 ± 0.32 after three injections (p = 0.008). The average CRT decreased significantly from 447.4 ± 167.7 µm at baseline to 267.9 ± 66.9 µm after treatment (p < 0.001). Complete resolution of macular edema was observed in 19 eyes (82.7%). No significant differences were found in the degree of change in BCVA (p = 0.883) and CRT (p = 0.629) when compared to the ranibizumab originator group (n = 23). No complications such as intraocular inflammation or retinal detachment were noted.
Conclusions
Treatment with SB11 loading injections in neovascular AMD led to significant improvements in vision and reductions in macular thickness. The extent of improvement was comparable to that achieved with the ranibizumab originator and no severe complications were observed.

5.Limitations of Obtaining Medical Information about Age-Related Macular Degeneration from Artificial Intelligence Chatbots

Purpose:
This study aims to evaluate the quality of and trends in artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot responses to questions related to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to analyze the frequency of incorrect key information.
Methods:
Three chatbots, ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4.0, and Gemini, were used in this study. Nine questions were formulated covering general information about: 1) AMD, 2) AMD treatment options, 3) effects and side effects of intraocular injections. Each question was queried three times with each of the three chatbots using two different accounts. Responses to items 1–3 were rated as poor/acceptable/good, and the frequency of incorrect key information was noted.
Results:
Overall, the majority of the queries received acceptable or good responses. Poor-quality responses were noted in 16.7% of ChatGPT 3.5 responses. Incorrect key information was present in 6.5% of all responses.
Conclusions
While AI chatbots generally provided acceptable responses to questions regarding AMD, some responses contained incorrect key information, suggesting the need for caution when accessing medical information through AI chatbots.

The Korean Dementia Association (KDA) has been organizing biennial international academic conferences since 2019, with the International Conference of the KDA (IC-KDA) 2023 held in Busan under the theme ‘Beyond Boundaries: Advancing Global Dementia Solutions.’ The conference comprised 6 scientific sessions, 3 plenary lectures, and 4luncheon symposiums, drawing 804 participants from 35 countries. Notably, a Korea– Taiwan Joint Symposium addressed insights into Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Plenary lectures by renowned scholars explored topics such as microbiome-related AD pathogenesis, social cognition in neurodegenerative diseases, and genetic frontotemporal dementia (FTD). On the first day, specific presentations covered subjects like the gut–brain axis and neuroinflammation in dementia, blood-based biomarkers in AD, and updates in AD therapeutics. The second day’s presentations addressed recent issues in clinical neuropsychology, FTD cohort studies, and the pathogenesis of non-AD dementia. The Academic Committee of the KDA compiles lecture summaries to provide comprehensive understanding of the advanced dementia knowledge presented at IC-KDA 2023.

The first edition of ‘A Standardized Pathology Report for Gastric Cancer’ was initiated by the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists and published 17 years ago. Since then, significant advances have been made in the pathologic diagnosis, molecular genetics, and management of gastric cancer (GC). To reflect those changes, a committee for publishing a second edition of the report was formed within the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists. This second edition consists of two parts: standard data elements and conditional data elements.The standard data elements contain the basic pathologic findings and items necessary to predict the prognosis of GC patients, and they are adequate for routine surgical pathology service. Other diagnostic and prognostic factors relevant to adjuvant therapy, including molecular biomarkers, are classified as conditional data elements to allow each pathologist to selectively choose items appropriate to the environment in their institution. We trust that the standardized pathology report will be helpful for GC diagnosis and facilitate large-scale multidisciplinary collaborative studies.

9.The Association Between Weekend Catch-Up Sleep and Depression by Age Group in Korean Adults

Objectives:
:We aimed to explore weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) by age and to find out the association between CUS and depression by the age group and weekday sleep duration (SD).
Methods:
:Using data from the 2016-2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the CUS by age of 16,174 subjects was investigated, and the depression data of 11,088 subjects were analyzed. CUS was calculated as the weekend sleep duration minus weekday sleep duration (SD). The mean of CUS and weekday SD in depression group and non-depression group was compared by early, middle, and late adulthood groups, and logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the effect of CUS on the depression by age group when weekday SD was insufficient.
Results:
:The CUS tended to decrease continuously with age, the mean of CUS in the late adult group was the shortest. However, the average SD, adjusted for weekend CUS, was the shortest in the middle adulthood group. Overall, the sleep durations were shorter in the depression group than in the non-depression group, but the CUS difference between the two groups was significantly only in the middle adulthood. The risk of depression was signifi-cantly higher when weekend CUS was less than 1hour with a short weekday SD of less than 6hours (OR 2.44, 95% CI: 1.78-3.35), and this finding was significant in all adult groups.
Conclusions
:The findings of this study suggest that short weekday SD and inadequate weekend CUS are as-sociated with depression and that CUS is an option to compensate for sleep deprivation and prevent depression.
10.Pathophysiological Role of TLR4 in Chronic Relapsing Itch Induced by Subcutaneous Capsaicin Injection in Neonatal Rats

Despite the high prevalence of chronic dermatitis and the accompanied intractable itch, therapeutics that specifically target itching have low efficacy. Increasing evidence suggests that TLRs contribute to immune activation and neural sensitization; however, their roles in chronic itch remain elusive. Here, we show that the RBL-2H3 mast cell line expresses TLR4 and that treatment with a TLR4 antagonist opposes the LPS dependent increase in mRNA levels of Th2 and innate cytokines. The pathological role of TLR4 activation in itching was studied in neonate rats that developed chronic itch due to neuronal damage after receiving subcutaneous capsaicin injections. Treatment with a TLR4 antagonist protected these rats with chronic itch against scratching behavior and chronic dermatitis.TLR4 antagonist treatment also restored the density of cutaneous nerve fibers and inhibited the histopathological changes that are associated with mast cell activation after capsaicin injection. Additionally, the expression of IL-1β, IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-13 mRNA in the lesional skin decreased after TLR4 antagonist treatment. Based on these data, we propose that inhibiting TLR4 alleviated itch in a rat model of chronic relapsing itch, and the reduction in the itch was associated with TLR4 signaling in mast cells and nerve fibers.
