4.Radiologic Features of Nuclear Protein of the Testis Midline Carcinoma of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses:Report of One Case.

Nuclear protein of the testis midline carcinoma (NMC) is a rare malignant tumor that is mostly located in the upper trachea,mediastinal midline,and paravertebral midline,and few literature has described the imaging features of NMC in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. In this article we summarize the clinical,radiologic,and pathologic data of one case of pathologically confirmed NMC in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus by focusing on its CT and magnetic resonance imaging features.

5.Virtual Reality in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

With the recent development of information and communication technology, social interest in virtual reality (VR) is increasing rapidly. VR technology is expanding into applications such as games, movies, entertainment, healthcare, education/media, manufacturing, and construction. In the healthcare, VR is used for surgical training, medical education, rehabilitation medicine, pain control, and treatment for psychiatric disorder, but the market size of VR in healthcare is not big compared to VR application in other industries. However, as the demand for high-quality medical care increases and the training time of the resident physicians is reduced, the demand for VR in the healthcare is expected to increase rapidly. Especially, the nose and paranasal sinus are composed of complicated osseous structures, which makes it difficult to understand the exact anatomy and requires highly skilled techniques to perform accurate and safe surgery. For this reason, nose and sinus are a suitable field to apply VR technology. In this review article, we describe the overview of VR technology used in healthcare, the status and prospects of VR in endoscopic sinus surgery and facial plastic surgery.

6.Traumatic cerebrospinal fluid leakage following septorhinoplasty.

Septoplasty/septorhinoplasty is a common ear, nose and throat procedure offered for those patients with deviated septum who are suffering from nasal obstruction and functional or cosmetic problems. Although it is a basic and simple procedure, it could lead to catastrophic complications including major skull base injuries which result in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. We describe two different cases of traumatic CSF leaks following septoplasty/septorhinoplasty at two different sites. The first patient suffered a CSF leak following septoplasty and presented to Alexandria University Hospital. The leak was still active at presentation and identified as coming from a defect in the roof of the sphenoid sinus and was repaired surgically. The second patient presented 4 days after her cosmetic septorhinoplasty with a CSF leak and significant pneumocephalus. She was managed conservatively. Understanding the anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and implementing proper surgical techniques are crucial in preventing intracranial complications when performing either septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. A good quality computed tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses is a valuable investigation to avoid major complications especially CSF leaks following either procedure.

7.Analysis of Histopathologic Characteristic and Treatment of Sinonasal Benign Tumor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The main treatment modality of sinonasal benign tumor is surgical resection, and the endoscopic intranasal approach has been commonly performed since the 1990s. The objective of this study was to evaluate the recurrence rates of different sinonasal benign tumors and to analyze the diverse approaches used in their surgical treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: In 270 patients who were histopathologically diagnosed with sinonasal benign tumor during a period of 20 years, histopathologic type, treatment approach, interval between first treatment and recurrence, and recurrence rate according to treatment approach were analyzed. RESULTS: Recurrence rate was higher with the intranasal approach than with the extranasal approach in inverted papilloma and angiofibroma, but the differences were not statistically significant. The proportion of the intranasal approach during the latter 10 years was higher than that during the former 10 years. There was no significant differences between the recurrence rate during the former 10 years and that during the latter 10 years for both intranasal and extranasal approaches. CONCLUSION: Based on tumor location and stage and skill of the surgeon, the intranasal approach can replace the extranasal approach with no major changes in treatment outcome.

8.A Case of Glomangiopericytoma in the Prevertebral Space.

Glomanigiopericytoma is a rare vascular neoplasm with a perivascular myoid phenotype. It is rarely found in the neck but most commonly in the nose and paranasal sinuses. We experienced a case of 72-year-old man who presented a 5-year history of a right neck mass. The pathologic diagnosis was glomangiopericytoma. We removed the mass transcervically and the patient showed no postoperative problem. We report this case with a review of literature.

9.Concurrent Mucosal Melanoma and Angiofibroma of the Nose.

Malignant melanoma rarely develops in the paranasal sinuses, and generally has a poor prognosis. However, mucosal melanoma can masquerade both clinically and histopathologically as a benign lesion, rendering accurate early diagnosis difficult. On the other hand, angiofibroma, a benign tumor, is more easily diagnosed than a mucosal melanoma, because the former exhibits specific histopathological features. No cases of concurrent angiofibroma and mucosal melanoma have been reported to date. We describe such a case below.

10.The Healing Effects of Autologous Mucosal Grafts in Experimentally Injured Rabbit Maxillary Sinuses.

OBJECTIVES: Healing processes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are quite complex, and poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to compare the effect of mucosal autologous grafts on the degenerated rabbit maxillary sinus mucosa with spontaneous wound healing. It is hypothesized that mucosal grafts will enhance ciliogenesis and improve the morphology of regenerated cilia. METHODS: Ten female New Zealand rabbits were included in the study. They underwent external maxillary sinus surgery through a transcutaneous approach. A total of 20 maxillary sinuses were randomly divided into 2 groups: 'spontaneous healing group' and 'autologous graft group.' The animals were sacrificed at the 14th day after the surgery. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), and light microscope were used for the evaluation. RESULTS: Cellular composition of the graft group is better than the spontaneous healing group. The graft group had larger areas covered with ciliary epithelium than the spontaneous healing group, and the mean length of the cilias were also longer. Additionally, there were wider cilia with abnormal morphology areas in the spontaneous healing group. CONCLUSION: In our opinion, covering of the denuded areas with a graft improves re-epithelization, and may prevent the early complications after sinus surgeries.
