Background: Vasovagal reactions (VVRs) are abnormal autonomic responses mediated by the vagus nerve. They can occur during or after interventional procedures and negatively impact patient care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of VVRs observed during nonoperative orthopedic interventions in outpatient clinics and to analyze the associated risk factors. Methods: The data of 1,208 patients who underwent nonoperative orthopedic interventions at a single-center outpatient clinic between December 2023 and December 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were categorized into 2 groups based on the occurrence of VVR. The clinical data of both groups were analyzed to identify factors associated with VVRs. Results: A total of 1,208 patients with a mean age of 54.7 years were included in the study. Among the 1,208 patients included, 51 cases of VVRs were reported (4.2%). The VVR group had a younger mean age (44.2 vs. 55.1 years, p < 0.001) and a higher proportion of females (74.5% vs. 59.2%, p = 0.029) compared to the non-VVR group. Mean visual analog scale (VAS) scores during intervention were higher in the VVR group (6.41 vs. 2.98, p < 0.001), and blood-injury-injection (BII) phobia was more common (39.2% vs. 1.8%, p < 0.001). Fasting time was longer in the VVR group (3.9 vs. 2.8 hours, p = 0.003). No significant differences were observed in hypertension, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, or asthma between groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions Younger age, female sex, higher VAS scores, BII phobia, and longer fasting times were the risk factors for VVRs associated with nonoperative orthopedic interventions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Palpitations are the most common complaint in cardiology outpatient clinics. These palpitations may be derived from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) and can be easily overlooked. It is unclear whether inter-atrial conduction time (ICT) may predict the paroxysmal AF in out-patients that present with palpitations. We evaluated the ability of the ICT to predict paroxysmal AF in these patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 199 patients (110 female). All patients underwent 24-hour Holter electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring (total of 327 Holter ECG monitorings, mean: 1.64 times per patient). Brief episodes of AF were documented in 35 patients (20 female, Group 1). The remaining patients without AF were designated as Group 2 (90 female). All patients underwent routine transthoracic echocardiographic examination. ICT was also measured by echocardiography. RESULTS: The mean age in Group 1 was greater than in Group 2 (63.02±14 vs. 51.27±16 years, p<0.001). The left atrium was larger in Group 1 than in Group 2 (39.7±3.4 vs. 37.29±4.3 mm, p<0.001). The other echocardiographic variables were comparable between the two groups. The mean ICT was significantly higher in Group 1 than in Group 2 (138±14 vs. 114±12 msn, p<0.001). The ICT of 127 ms was predictive for AF with a sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 87% (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings show that ICT was prolonged in patients with palpitations who developed a brief episode of AF in Holter ECG monitoring. ICT prolongation may be used to identify patients with palpitation that are at risk of an AF episode. Holter ECG monitoring should be repeated to detect AF episodes in patients with prolonged ICT.

PURPOSE: To investigate anterior segment parameters in obese patients in comparison to healthy individuals. METHODS: Thirty-four obese subjects and 34 age-sex-matched healthy subjects were enrolled in this prospective cross-sectional study. Ophthalmological examinations including intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), anterior chamber angle (ACA), and axial length (AL) measurements were performed on each subject. Height and weight of all subjects were recorded and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. RESULTS: IOP was significantly higher in the obese group (p = 0.003). The mean ACD in obese subjects was significantly lower than that in control subjects (p = 0.036). AL, ACV, ACA and CCT were not significantly different between the groups. There was a positive correlation between BMI and IOP (r = 0.404, p < 0.001). ACD and ACA were negatively correlated with BMI. CONCLUSIONS: IOP was significantly higher and ACD was significantly lower in obese subjects. AL, ACV, ACA and CCT were not significantly different between the groups. The impact of obesity on anterior chamber parameters should be further investigated.

Scabies and pediculosis are ubiquitous, contagious, and debilitating parasitic dermatoses. The tendency of high prevalence of pediculosis and scabies among school and preschool age children has prompted us to conduct a head louse and scabies prevalence survey among preschool nursery children in our district. A school-based, crosssectional study was performed, with 1,134 children chosen for evaluation. All cases were evaluated by physical examination and a detailed, structured questionnaire. The infestation was found in 14 (1.2%) of 1,134 children; 9 (0.8%) with pediculosis capitis and 5 (0.4%) with scabies. We found that infestations were more frequent in children with mothers whose education levels were low. This indicates the necessity of an improvement in the economic and sociocultural status of the community and the promotion of hygiene concepts and practices in order to improve health of preschool age children.
