1.Natural Killer Cell Assays: Clinical Applications and Future Directions

Natural killer (NK) cells play critical roles in immune surveillance and homeostasis maintenance through cytotoxicity and cytokine release. The ability of NK cells to eliminate target cells without the need for prior antigen recognition or antibody involvement has drawn considerable attention for translational and clinical applications. As clinical applications continue to broaden, interest in NK cell assays has been growing markedly. This review provides an in-depth discussion of current clinical applications of NK cell assays, including NK cell phenotype, frequency, and functional activity assessments. This review further highlights the diagnostic potential of these assays in terms of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and potential NK cell biomarker candidates in diverse pathological contexts, such as cancer, infection, autoimmune diseases, and other diseases. By integrating clinical insights with technological advancements, NK cell assays can serve as valuable tools for disease diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring.
2.Factors associated with vegetarian orientation among Seoul citizens:focusing on food literacy and sociodemographic characteristics

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
This study examined factors associated with vegetarian orientation among adults in Seoul, with a focus on food literacy (FL) and sociodemographic characteristics.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2023 Seoul Food Survey in Seoul, South Korea. The study included 3,592 adults aged ≥ 18 yrs, who were categorized into vegan, lacto-ovo vegetarian, pollo-pesco vegetarian, flexitarian, and omnivore groups. FL was assessed using a 33-item scale covering 3 domains: nutritional and safety, cultural and relational, and socioecological. Descriptive statistics, general linear models, and logistic regression analyses were performed.
RESULTS:
Among the participants, 16.0% followed a vegetarian-oriented diet, with flexitarians comprising the largest subgroup (10.9%). Vegetarian orientation was positively associated with being female (odds ratio [OR], 1.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05–1.90), age of ≥ 65 yrs (OR, 2.51; 95% CI, 1.50–4.21) and having a college education (OR, 2.51;95% CI, 1.78–3.53). Negative associations were found for higher household income (≥ 5 million KRW/month) (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.47–0.85) and low food security (OR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.24–0.44). Vegetarian-oriented individuals had higher FL scores, particularly in the socioecological domain. In the multivariable models, higher FL scores remained significantly associated with vegetarian orientation. Health management (63.8%) was the most commonly reported motivation.
CONCLUSION
Gender, age, educational level and FL in the socioecological domain were significantly associated with vegetarian orientation. Our study findings underscore the need for policies and programs that promote sustainable diets tailored to specific sociodemographic groups with varying FL levels.
3.Saliva assay: a call for methodological standardization

The oral cavity provides an ideal environment for microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, to flourish. Increasing attention has been focused on the connection between the oral microbiome and both oral and systemic diseases, spurring active research into the collection and analysis of specimens for healthcare purposes. Among the various methods for analyzing the oral microbiome, saliva analysis is especially prominent. Saliva samples, which can be collected non-invasively, provide information on the systemic health and oral microbiome composition of an individual. This review was performed to evaluate the current state of the relevant research through an examination of the literature and to suggest an appropriate assay method for investigating the oral microbiome. We analyzed articles published in English in SCI(E) journals after January 1, 2000, ultimately selecting 53 articles for review. Articles were identified through keyword searches in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases. Three experienced researchers conducted full-text assessments following title and abstract screening to select appropriate papers. Subsequently, they organized and analyzed the desired data. Our review revealed that most studies utilized unstimulated saliva samples for oral microbiome analysis. Of the 53 studies examined, 29 identified relationships between the oral microbiome and various diseases, such as oral disease, Behçet disease, cancer, and oral lichen planus. However, the studies employed diverse methods of collection and analysis, which compromised the reliability and accuracy of the findings. To address the limitations caused by methodological inconsistencies, a standardized saliva assay should be established.
4.Brolucizumab Treatment for Patients with Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy

Purpose:
To evaluate treatment outcomes of brolucizumab (BRZ) in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), including both treatment-naive and previously treated patients.
Methods:
This retrospective observational study included PCV patients followed for up to 12 months after their first BRZ injection. Patients underwent the treat-and-extend or pro re nata regimen throughout the follow-up, assessing visual acuity (VA), central subfoveal thickness, subfoveal choroidal thickness, and polyp height via optical coherence tomography at each visit. The presence of intraretinal fluid or subretinal fluid, treatment intervals at the last follow-up, and intraocular inflammation (IOI) were also evaluated.
Results:
Ninety-two eyes (20 treatment-naïve and 72 previously treated) were included. Treatment-naive patients exhibited significant improvements in both VA and anatomical outcomes, while previously treated patients primarily showed anatomical improvements with unchanged VA. In the switching group, 61.1% of patients extended their treatment interval by more than two weeks, with 36% achieving intervals longer than 12 weeks. Nine cases (9.8%) of IOI occurred, all in the switching group.
Conclusions
BRZ effectively treated both treatment-naive and previously treated PCV patients, with naive patients showing superior visual outcomes. The potential for extended treatment intervals in previously treated patients suggests BRZ as a valuable option for treatment-resistant PCV.
5.Multiple autoimmune syndrome in a dog presented with hematologic disease: a rare case report

Multiple autoimmune syndrome (MAS) refers to the occurrence of three or more autoimmune diseases in a patient. This case describes a 12-year-old neutered male Shih Tzu with fever and neutropenia, previously diagnosed with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and inflammatory bowel disease. Blood tests revealed leukopenia and neutropenia, and immune-mediated neutropenia was suspected after ruling out other causes of neutropenia. The dog showed no response to antibiotics, but treatment with prednisolone (2 mg/kg q24h) led to improvement. This case highlights the potential for MASs to occur in dogs and underscores the importance of their recognition in the diagnosis and management of immune-mediated diseases.
6.Bonding silica-containing CAD/CAM dental blocks to composite resin with universal adhesives

The bond strength to the silicate-based CAD/CAM blocks may be affected by the composition and microstructure of the silicatebased blocks, surface treatment, and the properties of the applied adhesive. In this study, the shear bond strength to the silicate blocks with various universal adhesives after sandblasting or HF-treatment was measured, and the effects of the additional silane application after surface treatments are evaluated. Six silica-containing blocks and five universal adhesives currently used in dental clinics were selected. After polishing the silicate block surface, the specimens were divided into two groups. The first groups were HF-treated and the second groups were sandblasted with alumina, and the surface roughness, contact angle, and microstructure were analyzed by CLSM (Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope), contact angle analyzer, and FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope).Composite resin (2 mm diameter) was bonded with universal adhesive to silicate blocks and stored in a 37 ℃ water bath for 24 hours, and the shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine. The measured values were statistically analyzed using the Tukey-multiple comparison test (α=0.05). For hybrid composite ceramics, there was no significant difference in bond strength between sandblasting or HF-treatment, and additional silane application may not be necessary when bonding with a universal adhesive, whereas for leucite-reinforced and lithium disilicate glass-ceramics, HF-treatment may be more favorable for adhesion than sandblasting, and additional silane application appears to be necessary even when applying a universal adhesive.
7.Evaluating the effectiveness of a food literacy pilot program for university students: using a mixed-methods research approach

As awareness of climate change increases, the relevance of environmental education in dietary choices gains prominence. Although diversely defined, food literacy (FL) is increasingly recognized as the ability to make food choices with an awareness of environmental sustainability. This study aims to conduct a pilot implementation and assess the effectiveness of a program developed to improve FL among university students.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
The study spanned from August 2022 to February 2023, involving 92 participants (42 in the intervention group and 50 in the control group). Over 11 weeks, the program included cooking classes, local farm visits, and environmental impact lectures developed through extensive literature reviews and interviews with students and experts. FL was measured using a 33-item survey along with basic sociodemographic factors. After the intervention, both groups participated in qualitative interviews. All statistical analyses were carried out in Stata/SE version 17.0, and interview data were analyzed in Microsoft Excel using the framework analysis method.
RESULTS:
The FL scores of the intervention group improved significantly from an average of 65.8 to 69.6 points (P = 0.015), with notable gains in the socio-ecological domain in FL from 65.3 to 71.5 points (P < 0.001). A linear regression analysis comparing FL between the intervention and control groups found that only the knowledge items were marginally significant (P = 0.054), with no statistically significant difference in the practice aspect before and after the intervention (P = 0.657). The interviews revealed that the intervention group experienced broadened perspectives and heightened environmental consciousness, although translating these into practice was challenged by unchanged daily routines.
CONCLUSION
This pilot program effectively enhanced some aspects of FL-related knowledge of participants. High satisfaction among participants and no dropouts indicated its potential for scaling. Future programs will benefit from strategies that facilitate the transition from educational improvement to practical application.

9.First Nationwide Mpox Vaccination Program in the Republic of Korea:Implications for an Enhanced Public Health Response

On May 1, 2024, the Republic of Korea lifted the infectious disease crisis alert for mpox, almost two years after the first case was reported. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has led the response, which included diagnosis, epidemiological investigations, treatment, and vaccination. This article particularly reviews the vaccination strategy implemented and proposes suggestions for enhancing future response efforts. Initially, the KDCA recommended pre-exposure prophylaxis for high-risk groups, later expanding to include broader demographics as domestic cases rose. By April 2024, a total of 6,863 individuals had received their first vaccine dose, with 3,875 completing the second dose of third-generation vaccines. Strategies to improve future responses include addressing stigma, securing nationally representative safety data, and conducting vaccine cost-benefit analyses.These measures will help ensure a robust and effective response to future outbreaks.
10.One-year Outcomes of Ultrathin Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty Combined with Cataract Surgery in the Korean Population

Purpose:
To evaluate the refractive outcomes after ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation (triple procedure) in the South Korean population.
Methods:
This retrospective observational study included 37 eyes of 36 patients who underwent the UT-DSAEK triple procedure between 2012 and 2021 in a single tertiary hospital. Preoperative and postoperative refractive outcomes and endothelial parameters at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months were observed.
Results:
At the final postoperative 12-month period, the average best-corrected visual acuity was 0.4 ± 0.5 in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution. The mean endothelial cell density at 12 months was 1,841.92 ± 731.24 cells/mm2, indicating no significant endothelial cell loss compared to the baseline (p = 0.128). The mean postoperative central corneal thickness at 12 months was 597.41 ± 86.26 μm. The postoperative mean absolute error at 12 months was 0.96 ± 0.89 diopters (D) and mean error was 0.89 ± 0.97 D.
Conclusions
The results of our South Korean cohort study on UT-DSAEK triple surgery showed favorable and safe outcomes. Regardless of graft thickness, it should be noted that a hyperopic shift of 1.00 to 2.00 D needs to be considered in the case of UT-DSAEK triple surgery.
