1.A review of domestic and international contexts for establishing a communication platform for early-career nurse scientists

Purpose:
As nursing continues to advance through digital health, clinical specialization, and interdisciplinary research, early-career nurse scientists are central to advancing innovation. However, Korea lacks a structured platform to support their research, collaboration, and career development. This review aimed to identify the needs of early-career nurse scientists and examine international best practices to guide the creation of an effective communication platform.
Methods:
This study involved a secondary analysis of the final report from the project “Establishment of a communication platform for young nursing scientists,” carried out by the Korean Society of Nursing Science. The report comprises data from focus group interviews with domestic graduate students and early-career researchers, a literature review of international communication and support systems, and a global policy analysis related to young nursing scientists. Based on this report, the present review synthesizes key findings and draws implications for the development of a communication platform in Korea.
Results:
International examples, such as grant writing programs, mentoring initiatives, and digital collaboration hubs, showed positive outcomes in strengthening research capacity and promoting the professional growth of nurse scientists. Based on these findings, key considerations for platform development include: (1) establishing clear leadership and a participatory governance model; (2) providing demand-driven content such as research guides, mentoring, and mental health resources; (3) implementing mechanisms to ensure sustainability, content quality, and user data protection; and (4) designing an integrated platform that fosters synergy across research, policy development, education, and global networking.
Conclusion
A digital platform for early-career nurse scientists should function not merely as an information portal, but also as dynamic infrastructure for collaboration, mentorship, and growth. It is recommended that the Korean Society of Nursing Science spearhead this initiative, with governmental support, to enhance the research capacity and expand the global engagement of Korean nursing scientists.
2.Prognostic Value of Ambulatory Status at Transplant in Older Heart Transplant Recipients: Implications for Organ Allocation Policy

Background:
Shortage of organ donors in the Republic of Korea has become a major problem. To address this, it has been questioned whether heart transplant (HTx) allocation should be modified to reduce priority of older patients. We aimed to evaluate post-HTx outcomes according to recipient age and specific pre-HTx conditions using a nationwide prospective cohort.
Methods:
We analyzed clinical characteristics of 628 patients from the Korean Organ Transplant Registry who received HTx from January 2015 to December 2020. Enrolled recipients were divided into three groups according to age. We also included comorbidities including ambulatory status. Non-ambulatory status was defined as pre-HTx support with either extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, continuous renal replacement therapy, or mechanical ventilation.
Results:
Of the 628 patients, 195 were < 50 years, 322 were 50–64 years and 111 were ≥ 65years at transplant. Four hundred nine (65.1%) were ambulatory and 219 (34.9%) were nonambulatory. Older recipients tended to have more comorbidities, ischemic cardiomyopathy, and received older donors. Post-HTx survival was significantly lower in older recipients (P = 0.025) and recipients with non-ambulatory status (P < 0.001). However, in contrast to non-ambulatory recipients who showed significant survival differences according to the recipient’s age (P = 0.004), ambulatory recipients showed comparable outcomes (P = 0.465).
Conclusion
Our results do not support use of age alone as an allocation criterion. Transplant candidate age in combination with some comorbidities such as non-ambulatory status may identify patients at a sufficiently elevated risk at which suitability of HTx should be reconsidered.
3.Neutralizing Activity and T-Cell Responses Against Wild Type SARSCoV-2 Virus and Omicron BA.5 Variant After Ancestral SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Booster Dose in PLWH Receiving ART Based on CD4 T-Cell Count

Background:
We evaluated severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-specific humoral and cellular responses for up to 6 months after the 3rd dose of ancestral coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in people living with HIV (PLWH) and healthy controls (HCs) who were not infected with COVID-19.
Methods:
Anti-spike receptor-binding domain IgG (anti-RBD IgG) concentrations using chemiluminescence immunoassay and neutralizing antibodies using focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT) were assessed at 1 week after each dose of vaccination, and 3 and 6 months after the 3rd dose in 62 PLWH and 25 HCs. T-cell responses using intracellular cytokine stain were evaluated at 1 week before, and 1 week and 6 months after the 3rd dose.
Results:
At 1 week after the 3rd dose, adequate anti-RBD IgG (> 300 binding antibody unit /mL) was elicited in all PLWH except for one patient with 36 CD4 T-cell count/mm3 . The geometric mean titers of 50% FRNT against wild type (WT) and omicron BA.5 strains of SARS-CoV-2 in PLWH with CD4 T-cell count ≥ 500 cells/mm3(high CD4 recovery, HCDR) were comparable to HC, but they were significantly decreased in PLWH with CD4 T-cell count < 500/mm3 (low CD4 recovery, LCDR). After adjusting for age, gender, viral suppression, and number of preexisting comorbidities, CD4 T-cell counts < 500/mm3 significantly predicted a poor magnitude of neutralizing antibodies against WT, omicron BA.5, and XBB 1.5 strains among PLWH. Multivariable linear regression adjusting for age and gender revealed that LCDR was associated with reduced neutralizing activity (P = 0.017) and interferon-γ-producing T-cell responses (P = 0.049 for CD T-cell; P = 0.014 for CD8 T-cell) against WT, and strongly associated with more decreased cross-neutralization against omicron BA.5 strains (P < 0.001).
Conclusion
HCDR demonstrated robust humoral and cell-mediated immune responses after a booster dose of ancestral SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, whereas LCDR showed diminished immune responses against WT virus and more impaired cross-neutralization against omicron BA.5 strain.
4.Factors Associated With Compliance and Persistence With Pharmacotherapy in Patients With Osteoporosis: A Nationwide Cohort Study in Korea

Background:
Despite the necessity of long-term management for fracture risk reduction, adherence to osteoporosis pharmacotherapy remains poor. We investigated the factors influencing adherence to pharmacotherapy among Korean patients with osteoporosis, with a particular focus on treatment with bisphosphonates (BPs).
Methods:
Data from 725,313 osteoporosis patients newly prescribed BPs or selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) between 2012 and 2014, obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, were analyzed. Adherence was assessed based on compliance and persistence over a two-year period, with factors associated with adherence identified using multivariable logistic regression.
Results:
Only 14.8% of the patients who started BPs or SERMs sustained medication compliance, with 15.8% persisting with treatment over the two-year follow-up. Compared with BPs, patients receiving SERMs showed better compliance and persistence (odds ratios [ORs], 1.44 and 1.48, respectively; P < 0.001); while patients receiving intravenous administration showed higher compliance and persistence (ORs, 2.08 and 1.76, respectively; P < 0.001) compared with those taking oral medications. Patients placed on a quarterly dosing schedule showed improved compliance and persistence (ORs, 1.55 and 1.31, respectively; P < 0.001) compared with those on other dosing intervals. Male gender, advanced age, living outside metropolitan areas, receiving treatment in non-general hospitals, and a history of previous fractures were associated with poorer two-year adherence.
Conclusion
This study underscores the complex nature of medication adherence among Korean osteoporosis patients, particularly those treated with BPs. These findings accordingly indicate that medication with more convenient administration regimens and fewer side effects, coupled with suitable follow-up durations, could contribute to enhancing treatment adherence.
5.Influence of food-related lifestyle and nutritional knowledge on online grocery shopping among adults in Jeju

Purpose:
This study analyzed the influence of dietary lifestyle and nutritional knowledge on the online food-purchasing behaviors of adults in Jeju.
Methods:
The study sampled 300 adults aged 18 to 69 years in Jeju, excluding incomplete responses or declined consent. The data were analyzed using the SPSS Win Program (ver 21.0), using principal component analysis, cluster analysis, frequency analysis, χ2-test, t-test, and analysis of variance. The significant results were examined using a Duncan’s multiplerange test. The survey questions assessed participants’ demographic information, dietary lifestyle, nutritional knowledge, and online food-purchasing habits.
Results:
Among the participants, dietary lifestyles could be classified into health-seeking, convenience-seeking, and taste-seeking clusters, with each showing distinct characteristics regarding nutrition knowledge and online food purchase behaviors. In particular, the ‘convenience-seeking’ cluster showed lower health-consciousness and nutrition knowledge and preferred convenience foods, while the ‘health-seeking’ cluster exhibited moderate nutrition knowledge and favored functional foods. The ‘diet-conscious’ cluster showed a higher level of nutritional awareness and made more frequent online purchases, particularly health and convenience foods. Furthermore, individuals with high nutrition knowledge were more focused on food labeling and verification. Moreover, dietary lifestyles significantly influenced consumer behaviors regarding online food purchases, including product preferences and the depth of food information reviewed.
Conclusion
This study underscores the fundamental role of dietary lifestyles and nutritional knowledge in shaping consumer behaviors regarding online food purchases among Jeju residents. These findings provide a foundation for developing tailored nutrition education materials that align with diverse dietary lifestyles. Furthermore, these insights can guide online food retailers in optimizing product information and marketing strategies to cater to the preferences of major consumer groups.
6.Nutrient Content Evaluation Using the Nutrition Labeling of Flour-Based Home Meal Replacement Foods: Focus on the Sodium and Sugar Content

This study aimed to provide basic data for promoting healthy food choices by evaluating the energy and nutrient content of ready-to-cook or ready-to-heat home meal replacement snacks. Eight hundred and ninety-four flour-based home meal replacement (HMR) products were analyzed, including 367 noodle dishes, 230 tteokbokki products, and 297 dumpling items. The serving sizes were determined by the product labeling. If not indicated, the total weight was used as the serving size if it could be considered a single serving. A serving size of 150 g was applied to dumplings sold in large packages. The average serving size was 249.9 g for noodles and 210.0 g for tteokbokki. The energy content varied significantly: noodles, tteokbokki, and dumplings had 439.8 kcal, 433.0 kcal, and 292.7 kcal, respectively (P<0.001). The carbohydrate content were higher in noodles (87.9 g) and tteokbokki (87.6 g) compared to dumplings (32.0 g) (P<0.001), while the sugar content was highest in tteokbokki (13.5 g) (P<0.001). The protein content was highest in noodles (11.7 g), followed by dumplings (10.9 g) and tteokbokki (9.9 g) (P<0.001). The sodium content was highest in noodles (1,777.9 mg), followed by tteokbokki (1,152.3 mg) and dumplings (583.7 mg) (P<0.001). The price per serving was highest for noodles (3,303.9 KRW) (P<0.001). The nutrient content varied within the same product type depending on the flavor, temperature (hot vs. cold), and whether a broth was included.These findings highlight the considerable differences in nutritional profiles among HMR snack foods and underscore the importance of selecting products based on their intended dietary use.
7.A Study of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in Patients in their 20s

Purpose:
To evaluate the characteristics, anatomical success rate, and factors that may affect the anatomical success of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in patients in their 20s.
Methods:
We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients aged 20-29 years who underwent surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment from January 2018 to December 2022. We examined factors such as sex, age, duration of illness, preoperative best corrected visual acuity, presence of underlying diseases, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, lattice degeneration, macular involvement, extent of retinal detachment at diagnosis, axial length, and myopia level to explore their impact on surgical outcomes.
Results:
The study included 122 eyes. The mean age was 23.81 ± 2.82 years, and the average sphere power was -5.80 ± 3.71 diopters (D). The percentage of eyes with a refraction of ≤ -6.0 D came to 44.3% (54/122), and with ≤ -4.0 D it amounted to 72.1% (88/122). The average logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) best corrected visual acuity improved significantly from 0.52 ± 0.68 before surgery to 0.28 ± 0.45 after surgery. The primary surgical success rates were 92.0% for scleral buckling, 88.9% for vitrectomy, and 92.3% for combined scleral buckling and vitrectomy, with no significant factors related to anatomical success identified.
Conclusions
There was a high prevalence of moderate to severe myopia among patients in their 20s with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between the degree of myopia and anatomical success. Both functional and anatomical outcomes were generally favorable in these patients.
8.A comparison of the outcomes of families with children aged less than 2 who received universal versus sustained nurse home visiting services in Korea: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES:
This study aimed to compare maternal outcomes and the home environment between non‑vulnerable families with children under 2 receiving universal home visiting services and vulnerable families receiving sustained home visiting services.
METHODS:
This study was conducted in Seoul, Korea, where the country’s first nurse‑led early childhood home visiting program was introduced. A total of 551 mother‑child dyads participated in cross‑sectional surveys conducted at various child ages (6±2 weeks, 6±1 months, 12±1 months, and 24±1 months). Universal home visiting services were provided within six weeks postpartum to non‑vulnerable families, while vulnerable families received sustained services consisting of 25 visits over 24 months. Maternal knowledge of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and childcare, maternal distress, and the Korean Infant‑Toddler Home Observation for Measurement of Environment (K‑IT‑HOME) were assessed.
RESULTS:
Overall, the universal home visitation group demonstrated higher levels of maternal knowledge regarding SIDS and childcare compared to the sustained home visitation group (all p-values <0.05), while the sustained home visitation group reported higher levels of maternal distress (p<0.001). The total K‑IT‑HOME score was 1.47 points higher in the universal home visitation group than in the sustained home visitation group (p<0.001). No significant differences were observed in the acceptance, organization, or involvement subscales of the K‑IT‑HOME (all p-values >0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrated that disparities in maternal outcomes and home environments persisted in early childhood between the sustained and universal home visitation groups.
9.Comparison of the clinical characteristics of asthma based on methacholine bronchial provocation test sensitivity

Purpose:
Methacholine bronchial provocation tests (MBPTs) are commonly used to assess airway hyperresponsiveness, but some patients show no significant response. This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics of asthmatic patients based on their sensitivity to MBPTs.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study involving adult asthmatic patients from 6 university hospitals in South Korea. Patients were categorized into 2 groups: those with MBPT sensitivity (the provocative concentration of methacholine that leads to a 20% reduction in forced expiratory volume in 1 second [PC20]≤ 16 mg/mL) and those with lower sensitivity (PC 20 > 16 mg/mL). Clinical characteristics were compared between the 2 groups.
Results:
Among 346 patients, 213 had PC 20 ≤ 16 mg/mL and 133 had PC 20 > 16 mg/mL. The PC20> 16 mg/mL group had a higher prevalence of late-onset asthma (P= 0.024) and obesity (P= 0.045). While no significant differences in immunoglobulin E (≥ 200 IU/mL) were found, the PC 20 ≤ 16 mg/mL group had greater T2-high inflammation, such as elevated eosinophil counts and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (P< 0.001 and P= 0.004, respectively). Asthma exacerbations requiring emergency visits or hospitalizations were more frequent in the PC 20 > 16 mg/mL group, despite a lower proportion of patients on higher-step treatments according to Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines.
Conclusion
Asthmatic patients with PC 20 > 16 mg/mL tend to present with late-onset asthma, less T2-high inflammation, and higher rates of asthma exacerbations. Further studies are needed to clarify the clinical features of asthma patients with PC 20 > 16 mg/mL and assess the long-term significance of these findings.

Purpose:
Cancer poses a significant global health challenge, demanding precise genomic testing for individualized treatment strategies. Targeted-panel sequencing (TPS) has improved personalized oncology but often lacks comprehensive coverage of crucial cancer alterations. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) addresses this gap, offering extensive genomic testing. This study demonstrates the medical potential of WGS.
Materials and Methods:
This study evaluates target-enhanced WGS (TE-WGS), a clinical-grade WGS method sequencing both cancer and matched normal tissues. Forty-nine patients with various solid cancer types underwent both TE-WGS and TruSight Oncology 500 (TSO500), one of the mainstream TPS approaches.
Results:
TE-WGS detected all variants reported by TSO500 (100%, 498/498). A high correlation in variant allele fractions was observed between TE-WGS and TSO500 (r=0.978). Notably, 223 variants (44.8%) within the common set were discerned exclusively by TE-WGS in peripheral blood, suggesting their germline origin. Conversely, the remaining subset of 275 variants (55.2%) were not detected in peripheral blood using the TE-WGS, signifying them as bona fide somatic variants. Further, TE-WGS provided accurate copy number profiles, fusion genes, microsatellite instability, and homologous recombination deficiency scores, which were essential for clinical decision-making.
Conclusion
TE-WGS is a comprehensive approach in personalized oncology, matching TSO500’s key biomarker detection capabilities. It uniquely identifies germline variants and genomic instability markers, offering additional clinical actions. Its adaptability and cost-effectiveness underscore its clinical utility, making TE-WGS a valuable tool in personalized cancer treatment.
