Background: The liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed to overcome interference from thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAb); however, it has not yet been implemented in Korea. This study aimed to confirm the accuracy of LC-MS/MS compared to conventional methods and to identify its advantages in patients with thyroid carcinoma (TC). Methods: A total of 206 TC and 18 Hashimoto’s thyroiditis samples were collected. TgAb-positive (TgAb-P) was defined as TgAb >60 U/mL. Tg testing was performed using LC-MS/MS, immunoradiometric assay (Tg-IRMA), and chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay (Tg-CMIA). The interference of TgAb in LC-MS/MS and CMIA methods was evaluated through an in vitro TgAb spiking experiment. Results: The frequency of TgAb-P in TC samples was 76.2%. Correlations between assays were as follows: Tg measurements made by LC-MS/MS (Tg-MS) and Tg-IRMA (R=0.93), Tg-MS and Tg-CMIA (R=0.96), and Tg-CMIA and Tg-IRMA (R=0.99), and it was lower in TgAb-P than TgAb-negative group. Clinical factors (total thyroidectomy, thyroid lobectomy, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) did not affect these correlations. In TgAb spiking experiments, Tg-CMIA showed false negatives in TgAb-P, whereas Tg-MS did not. Among 21 TC cases with highly suspicious disease recurrence but Tg-IRMA <1 ng/mL, Tg-MS detected Tg ≥0.5 ng/mL in six samples. However, there was no consistent pattern of recurrence or TgAb trends. Conclusion Correlations between assays were lower in TgAb-P cases. The spike test results show Tg-MS is less prone to false negatives in TgAb-P cases. Tg-MS may improve Tg detection in TgAb-P cases. However, we could not identify a distinct patient group with shared clinical features that would benefit from Tg-MS.

Methods: The PubMed database was searched for relevant studies. Eligibility criteria included double-blind randomized controlled trial design, assessment of the effect of treatment on bronchiolitis in infants under 2 years of age, and publication in English from inception through July 31, 2020. The primary efficacy outcome was the length of hospital stay, while the secondary outcome was the clinical severity score. The standardized treatment effect and standard error of the effect size were calculated. Results: We identified 45 randomized controlled trials of 24 pairwise comparisons. These 45 trials included 5,061 participants and investigated 13 types of interventions (12 active, 1 placebo). Inhalation therapy with epinephrine (standard mean difference [SMD], -0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.8 to -0.03) and hypertonic saline (SMD, -0.29; 95% CI, -0.55 to -0.03) reduced the length of hospital stay compared with normal saline. Hypertonic saline was the most effective at improving the clinical severity score (SMD, -0.52; 95% CI, -0.95 to -0.10). Conclusion Inhalation therapy with epinephrine and hypertonic saline reduced the length of hospital stay and the clinical severity of bronchiolitis among infants under 2 years of age.

The hygiene hypothesis, first proposed in 1989, suggested that reduced exposure to infections in early life leads to allergic diseases by the defects in the establishment of immune tolerance. Although many studies provided evidence that some exposure conditions, including family size, antibiotics, probiotics, and viral or bacterial infections, are strongly related to the prevalence of allergic diseases, thereby supporting the hygiene hypothesis, some evidence does not provide acceptable results for the hygiene hypothesis. Further, most studies have focused on patients with asthma or atopic dermatitis, not allergic rhinitis. In this review, we summarize the recent studies for and against the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ and identify causal association with the prevalence of allergic rhinitis.

Purpose: There are many studies regarding the increased relationship between pregnancy outcomes of singleton with endometriosis. However, there was limited evidence of twin pregnancies with endometriosis. This study aimed to compare the pregnancy outcomes and complications in twin pregnancies with or without endometriosis in a single institution. Materials and Methods: From January 2011 to July 2022, a retrospective analysis of twin pregnancies was conducted. The endometriosis group included patient with histological or visual confirmation before pregnancy or during cesarean section. Pregnancy outcomes and complications were compared between the two groups. Results: Out of 1714 patients examined, 127 (7.4%) were included in the endometriosis group. Maternal body mass index (BMI) was lower in the endometriosis group (p<0.001). There were no significant differences in maternal age, mode of conception, chorionicity, and pregnancy outcomes, such as gestational age at delivery (p=0.835) and the preterm birth rate (p=0.579). The endometriosis group had a significantly higher rate of obstetrical complication: small for gestational age (SGA) <10% (p=0.029). However, after adjustment for BMI, the endometriosis group showed no statistical significance in obstetrical complications, including SGA (adjusted odds ratio, 1.568; 95% confidence interval, 0.984–2.499; p=0.059). Conclusion Twin pregnancies with endometriosis were not related to adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes and obstetrical complications. To confirm these outcomes, further large prospective studies are required.

Cardio-oncology is a critical field due to the escalating significance of cardiovascular toxicity as a side effect of anti‑ cancer treatments. Cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) is a prevalent condition associated with car‑ diovascular toxicity, necessitating effective strategies for prediction, monitoring, management, and tracking. This comprehensive review examines the definition and risk stratification of CTRCD, explores monitoring approaches during anticancer therapy, and highlights specific cardiovascular toxicities linked to various cancer treatments. These include anthracyclines, HER2-targeted agents, vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies, and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes therapies. Incorporating the Korean data, this review offers insights into the regional nuances in managing CTRCD. Using systematic follow-up incorporating cardiovascular imaging and biomarkers, a better understanding and management of CTRCD can be achieved, optimizing the cardiovascular health of both cancer patients and survivors.

Background: Hand hygiene is considered the simplest and most cost-effective method of infection prevention. Regular observation and feedback on hand hygiene compliance are key strategies for its enhancement. This study evaluated the effectiveness of hand hygiene surveillance, including direct observation and feedback, by comprehensively analyzing the reported hand hygiene compliance within the Korean National Healthcare-Associated Infections Surveillance System from 2019 to 2022. Methods: Participating medical institutions included general hospitals and hospitals with infection control departments that consented to participate. Hand hygiene surveillance was conducted using direct observation. Collected data, including healthcare workers, clinical areas, hand hygiene moments, and hand hygiene compliance, were recorded to calculate hand hygiene compliance rates. Additionally, the volume of alcohol-based hand sanitizers used per patient per day was investigated as an indirect indicator of hand hygiene compliance. The study was conducted from July 2019 to December 2022. Results: Hand hygiene compliance increased from 87.2% in Q3 2019 to 89.9% in 2022. Nurses and medical technologists showed the highest compliance rates, whereas doctors showed the lowest compliance rates. Intensive care units excelled in compliance, whereas emergency de partments lagged. Compliance was highest after patient contact and lowest when the patient’s surroundings were touched. Larger hospitals consumed more alcohol-based hand sanitizers than smaller hospitals did. Conclusion This study confirmed an improvement in hand hygiene compliance through sustained surveillance, indicating its contribution not only to preventing infection transfer within healthcare facilities but also to fostering a culture of hand hygiene in the country.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study explores the parental characteristics that affect the eating behaviors of preschool children. The nutrition quotient for preschool children (NQ-P) tool was applied to measure the eating behaviors of preschool children, and the relationship between parents’ health beliefs and children’s eating behaviors was investigated by applying the health belief model.MATERIALS/METHODS: In August 2018, a self-administered online survey was conducted on a sample of parents of children aged 3 to 5 years living in the Seoul and Gyeonggi area. A total of 248 respondents were analyzed via descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s multiple comparison test, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: The eating behaviors of preschool children significantly differed based on parents’ education level and monthly income (P < 0.01). Among the factors of the health belief model, “perceived benefit” had the highest score at 4.37 points. The multiple regression analysis confirmed that parents’ “self-efficacy” raised the NQ-P scores (β = 0.175, P< 0.05), balance scores (β = 0.204, P < 0.01), and environment scores of preschool children (β = 0.149,P < 0.05). The study results showed that if parents are educated on healthy eating habits and their level of self-efficacy for healthy eating practices increases, the formation of correct eating behaviors for preschool children is more likely. CONCLUSION This study provides preliminary data to develop an education program for parents to understand proper eating behaviors for their children and may help form healthy eating habits and encourage the healthy growth of preschool children.
