Purpose: Since 1995, the Korean Gastric Cancer Association (KGCA) has been periodically conducting nationwide surveys on patients with surgically treated gastric cancer. This study details the results of the survey conducted in 2023. Materials and Methods: The survey was conducted from March to December 2024 using a standardized case report form. Data were collected on 86 items, including patient demographics, tumor characteristics, surgical procedures, and surgical outcomes. The results of the 2023 survey were compared with those of previous surveys. Results: Data from 12,751 cases were collected from 66 institutions. The mean patient age was 64.6 years, and the proportion of patients aged ≥71 years increased from 9.1% in 1995 to 31.7% in 2023. The proportion of upper-third tumors slightly decreased to 16.8% compared to 20.9% in 2019. Early gastric cancer accounted for 63.1% of cases in 2023.Regarding operative procedures, a totally laparoscopic approach was most frequently applied (63.2%) in 2023, while robotic gastrectomy steadily increased to 9.5% from 2.1% in 2014.The most common anastomotic method was the Billroth II procedure (48.8%) after distal gastrectomy and double-tract reconstruction (51.9%) after proximal gastrectomy in 2023.However, the proportion of esophago-gastrostomy with anti-reflux procedures increased to 30.9%. The rates of post-operative mortality and overall complications were 1.0% and 15.3%, respectively. Conclusions The results of the 2023 nationwide survey demonstrate the current status of gastric cancer treatment in Korea. This information will provide a basis for future gastric cancer research.

Background and Objectives: Until now, apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) has been considered to have a benign prognosis in terms of cardiovascular mortality. The prevalence of sudden cardiac arrest and the current status of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantations in patients with apical HCM remain to be elucidated. Methods: Between July 2001 and May 2021, 96 HCM patients who had undergone ICD implantations from 3 tertiary hospitals were reviewed. We evaluated the prevalence of apical HCM and the indication for an ICD implantation. Results: Fifteen patients (15.6%) had apical HCM and 81 (84.4%) the non-apical type including septal (n = 56) and diffuse (n = 25) types, respectively. Sixty-four patients (66.7%) received ICD implantations for primary prevention and 32 (33.3%) for secondary prevention.Among those with apical HCM, 7 patients (46.7%) presented with an aborted sudden cardiac death or documented ventricular fibrillation, therefore, they received ICD implantations for secondary prevention. The proportion of secondary prevention ICD implantations did not significantly differ between apical and non-apical HCM subtypes (46.7% [7/15] vs. 30.9% [25/81], P = 0.233). Conclusions The proportion of secondary prevention ICD implantations did not differ significantly by HCM subtype. ICD implantations should be considered for high-risk patients with apical HCM.

Present case report describes a case of bifid ureter arising directly from separate calyces and renal pelvis of the kidney. Incomplete ureter duplication on the left side in a 78-year-old male cadaver was found during an anatomy class.These ureters converged in a Y-shaped pattern just above the level of the anterior superior iliac spine. In the coronal section of the kidney, the anterior ureter arose from a renal pelvis that was divided into two major calyces in the lower two-thirds of the kidney. On the other hand, the posterior ureter was directly connected to a major calyx in the upper third of the kidney, without the formation of a renal pelvis. This anatomical variation has implications for diagnostic approaches, especially in the use of imaging techniques by urologists for the insertion of stents in the treatment of phyelonephritis.
