1.Effect of toothpaste with different components on toothbrushing wear resistance of micro-hybridano-filled resin composites

The purpose of this study was to observe the surface morphology and roughness of micro-hybrid and nano-filled resin composites and compare wear resistance by conducting a toothbrushing wear test with toothpastes with different abrasive ingredients. Two types of resin composites containing micro-hybrid fillers (Z100 Restorative, Filtek Z250) and one type of resin composite containing nanofillers (Filtek Z350 XT) were used. For the toothbrushing wear test, 90 resin composite samples with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 1 mm were prepared. A force of 2 N and 100,000 cycles of brushing were performed using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The toothpastes used in the test were classified into 4 groups according to the abrasive ingredients (hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and zeolite-M). After the toothbrushing wear test, the surface morphology of the samples was observed using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the surface roughness was measured using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Relatively large filler particles (micro size) protruded from the surface of the micro-hybrid resin composite groups, and small crater-shaped defects were observed. The surface roughness values of the groups that performed the wear test with toothpaste containing zeolite-M were significantly higher than the other groups (P<0.05). The surface roughness value was significantly (P<0.05) highest in the group where the nanofilled resin composite was wear-tested with toothpaste containing zeolite-M. However, regardless of the type of toothpaste, the surface roughness showed low values of less than 0.1 μm. The surface appeared uniform and smooth compared to the surface of micro-hybrid resin composites. Finally, the nano-filled resin composite showed relatively higher wear resistance than the micro-hybrid resin composite. This means that wear resistance during brushing may indicate the durability of the material in the clinic.
2.Transcriptomic Analysis of Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Focus on Immune-Subtyping, Oncogenic Fusion, and Recurrence

Objectives:
. Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine tumor, with rapidly increasing incidence worldwide. However, its transcriptomic characteristics associated with immunological signatures, driver fusions, and recurrence markers remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the transcriptomic characteristics of advanced papillary thyroid cancer.
Methods:
. This study included 282 papillary thyroid cancer tumor samples and 155 normal samples from Chungnam National University Hospital and Seoul National University Hospital. Transcriptomic quantification was determined by high-throughput RNA sequencing. We investigated the associations of clinical parameters and molecular signatures using RNA sequencing. We validated predictive biomarkers using the Cancer Genome Atlas database.
Results:
. Through a comparison of differentially expressed genes, gene sets, and pathways in papillary thyroid cancer compared to normal tumor-adjacent tissue, we found increased immune signaling associated with cytokines or T cells and decreased thyroid hormone synthetic pathways. In addition, patients with recurrence presented increased CD8+ T-cell and Th1-cell signatures. Interestingly, we found differentially overexpressed genes related to immune-escape signaling such as CTLA4, IDO1, LAG3, and PDCD1 in advanced papillary thyroid cancer with a low thyroid differentiation score. Fusion analysis showed that the PI3K and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways were regulated differently according to the RET fusion partner genes (CCDC6 or NCOA4). Finally, we identified HOXD9 as a novel molecular biomarker that predicts the recurrence of thyroid cancer in addition to known risk factors (tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and extrathyroidal extension).
Conclusion
. We identified a high association with immune-escape signaling in the immune-hot group with aggressive clinical characteristics among Korean thyroid cancer patients. Moreover, RET fusion differentially regulated PI3K and MAPK signaling depending on the partner gene of RET, and HOXD9 was found to be a recurrence marker for advanced papillary thyroid cancer.
3.Changes in plasma sclerostin level associated with use of a medium cut-off dialyzer in end-stage renal disease

Background:
Larger middle molecules are important substances associated with cardiovascular complications in end- stage renal disease. Unfortunately, larger middle molecules are not reliably removed by a high-flux dialyzer. A medium cut-off (MCO) membrane could effectively remove larger middle molecules. This study aimed to identify the long -term effect of the MCO membrane for changes of larger middle molecules.
Methods:
Thirty-four patients were prospectively analyzed for 12 months. The enrolled patients were divided into control and MCO groups. We measured the plasma levels of growth differentiation factor 15, sclerostin, and fibroblast growth factor 23 in larger middle molecules and those of biomarkers including small solutes. Single-pool Kt/V (spKt/V) and reduction ratios also were evaluated.
Results:
Plasma sclerostin did not increase significantly in patients using the MCO dialyzer (135.3 [–637.7 to 908.3], p = 0.715). And there was a significant difference in change of plasma sclerostin level between the two groups (–1,646.9 [–3,015.2 to –278.7], p = 0.033). Furthermore, a negative association between calcium and sclerostin was not observed in the MCO group (r = –0.142, p = 0.587). Solute clearance of larger middle molecules in the MCO group was significantly higher. Moreover, spKt/V values for patients in the MCO group were significantly increased without albumin loss. Values are presented as mean (95% confidence interval [CI]) or adjusted mean (95% CI).
Conclusion
The MCO dialyzer can increase dialytic adequacy and suppress the increase in plasma sclerostin level without significant albumin loss in patients with end-stage renal disease.
4.Effects of Iron Dietary Supplements to Prevent Iron Deficiency in Repeat Blood Donors

Background:
The purpose of this study was to prepare data for the prevention and management of iron deficiency by analyzing the effects of taking iron supplements provided by blood centers for repeat blood donors.
Methods:
The high-risk groups with a potential iron deficiency were defined as three or more whole blood donations within the previous year and were provided with iron supplements for three months. Their hemoglobin and ferritin levels were checked up once a month for six months. The effectiveness of the iron supplements was evaluated by analyzing the changes in the initial and monthly hemoglobin and ferritin results.
Results:
At the time of recruitments, an average 50.4% (40.8% of men and 65.3% of women, respectively) of participants had ferritin levels of less than 15 ng/mL, the World Health Organization iron deficiency standard, but after three months iron supplementation, the results decreased to 10.9% (9.0% of men and 13.8% of women). The ferritin levels increased significantly after taking iron supplements for three months and showed significant increases in both men and women, particularly after two months (P<0.05).
Conclusion
The dietary iron supplements containing low-dose iron were effective in preventing iron deficiency in repeat blood donors by increasing the ferritin levels.

Background:
and PurposeImpulse-control disorder is an important nonmotor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that can lead to financial and social problems, and be related to a poor quality of life. A nationwide multicenter prospective study was performed with the aim of validating the Korean Version of the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (K-QUIP-RS).
Methods:
The K-QUIP-RS was constructed using forward and backward translation, and pretesting of the prefinal version. PD patients on stable medical condition were recruited from 27 movement-disorder clinics. Participants were assessed using the K-QUIP-RS and evaluated for parkinsonian motor and nonmotor statuses and for PD-related quality of life using a predefined evaluation battery. The test–retest reliability of the K-QUIP-RS was assessed over an interval of 10–14 days, and correlations between the KQUIP-RS and other clinical scales were analyzed.
Results:
This study enrolled 136 patients. The internal consistency of the K-QUIP-RS was indicated by a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.846, as was the test–retest reliability by a Guttman split-half coefficient of 0.808. The total K-QUIP-RS score was positively correlated with the scores for depression and motivation items on the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS), Montgomery-Asberg Depression Scale, and Rapid-Eye-Movement Sleep-Behavior-Disorders Questionnaire. The total K-QUIP-RS score was also correlated with the scores on part II of the UPDRS and the PD Quality of Life-39 questionnaire, and the dopaminergic medication dose.
Conclusions
The K-QUIP-RS appears to be a reliable assessment tool for impulse-control and related behavioral disturbances in the Korean PD population.
8.Comparative Study of Clinical Features between Early- and Late-Onset Schizophrenia in South Korea

OBJECTIVES: Late-onset schizophrenia (LOS, age at first onset ≥40 years) is characterized by including predominance of women, better premorbid social adjustment and lower severity of positive/negative symptoms. However, few studies have been conducted on LOS, especially in Asian countries. This study aimed to examine the clinical features of LOS in comparison with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS). METHODS: By retrospectively reviewing medical records, we assessed demographic data and clinical features of 76 LOS (20 males) and 357 EOS (144 males) who admitted to the psychiatric ward of a general hospital. RESULTS: The mean ages of onset were 47.3±5.1 (LOS) and 25.7±6.5 (EOS) years. There were significantly more women in LOS (73.7%) than EOS (59.6%). Significantly more LOS patients had a marital (88.2% vs. 25.8%) and employment history (28.9% vs. 13.1%) than EOS. Patients with LOS had fewer negative (14.3±9.0 vs. 19.9±9.3), general psychopathology score (36.9±11.1 vs. 42.3±13.9) than EOS patients. CONCLUSION: In line with previous studies, this study demonstrated that LOS patients have better premorbid social adjustment. Our finding also replicates previous findings that LOS patients differ from EOS in predominance of women and relative lack of negative symptoms. These results suggest that LOS may be a distinct subtype of schizophrenia.

Although several studies have attempted to uncover the effects of POPs on the endocrine and nervous systems and on cancer, few focus on the relationship between low-dose POPs and public health. Here, we attempt to determine the relationship between the level of POPs and common gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and constipation. METHODS: We recruited 121 subjects who visited Kyungpook National University Medical Center for health screening. Plasma concentrations were evaluated for 40 kinds of POPs including 17 types of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 23 types of organochlorine pesticides (OCP). Furthermore, the Korean version of the Rome III criteria was used to identify gastrointestinal symptoms. RESULTS: Based on our results, abdominal discomfort showed an inverse relationship with several PCBs and an inverted U-shaped relationship with several other OCPs including pp-DDD and pp-DDT. The effects of pp-DDD and pp-DDT on abdominal discomfort were similar to those of OCPs on obesity and metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that mild and unspecified gastrointestinal symptoms with no clear causes could be related to POP levels.
