Annals of Geriatric Medicine and Research 2026;30(1):70-76
Background:
As Taiwan’s population ages, falls among older adults have become a critical public health concern. However, limited data exist regarding temporal trends and injury patterns in fall-related emergency department (ED) visits. This study aimed to examine trends in fall-related ED visits and hospitalizations among older adults in Taiwan and to explore injury distributions by age group.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Taiwan University Hospital between 2011 and 2017. Patients aged ≥65 years were compared with those aged 20–64 years. Fall-related visits were identified using chief complaints and the International Classification of Diseases 9th/10th revision (ICD-9/ICD-10) codes. Outcomes included hospitalization rates, length of stay, and 30-day mortality.
Results:
A total of 22,471 fall-related ED visits were analyzed. While visits among younger adults declined (annual growth rate, -1.34%), visits among older adults increased (2.37% annually), with the steepest rise in those aged ≥85 years. Hospitalization occurred in 27.1% of older adults, nearly double that of younger adults (14.4%). Older adults also had longer hospital stays and higher 30-day mortality rates, findings consistent even when restricted to lower limb fractures.
Conclusion
Fall-related ED visits and hospitalizations are rising disproportionately among Taiwan’s older population. Targeted prevention strategies and transitional care interventions are urgently needed to address the growing clinical and economic burden of falls in aging societies.

Objective To provide a scientific basis for vector prevention and control in port areas, vector monitoring has been conducted continuously to characterize the composition, density, and seasonal fluctuations of vectors across 21 port-areas of Shandong province from 2017 to 2023. Methods In accordance with the Regional Vector Monitoring Plan for Frontier Ports, vector surveillance of mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, rodents, and other disease vectors was performed. Data were analyzed to describe vector community composition and identify seasonal fluctuations. Results A total of 601 rodents belonging to 1 family, 4 genera, and 4 species were captured. Three dominant rodent species inhabit port areas. In addition, 88 104 mosquitoes were captured and classified into 3 subfamilies, 4 genera, and 12 species; 38 959 flies were trapped and classified into 8 families,31 genera, and 51 species, including 9 dominant fly species in port-areas; and 54 672 captured cockroaches were classified into 2 families,4 genera, and 4 species, with Blattella germanica as the dominant species. Conclusions Significant vector community changes(P<0.005)have been identified after the epidemic. To improve the pertinence and efficacy of port health quarantine work, continuous and strong attention should be paid to vector compositions and population densities at Shandong ports.

Objective:To investigate the impact of four registration methods on the accuracy of virtual occlusal records (VOR) in intraoral scanning for implant restorations with multiple missing teeth. Methods:A mandibular model simulating clinical conditions with multiple missing teeth (right first molar, left second premolar, left first molar, left second molar) and a maxillary compete dentition model were mounted on a semi-adjustable articulator. Subsequently, twelve 0.5 mm stainless steel spheres were adhered to reference positions (16, 46, 13, 43, 23, 33, 25, 35, 26, 36, 27, 37) as fiducial markers. Following this, a laboratory scanner generated reference datasets by digitizing the models in maximum intercuspation (MIP). Meanwhile, ten maxillary and mandibular scans were acquired using an intraoral scanner, with all nonarticulated scans duplicated four times to ensure data consistency. Forty VOR intraoral scans were performed in MIP using four registration protocols: left-side, right-side, anterior, and bilateral registration ( n=10 per group), randomized via a computer-generated pseudo-random sequence. For measurement, linear distances (D16-46, D13-43, D23-33, D25-35, D26-36, D27-37, D16-46 represented the single-tooth defect position, whereas D25-35, D26-36, D27-37 reflected positions in free-end edentulism areas) between opposing markers were measured in a reverse engineering software, with deviations (ΔD) from the reference scan calculated to assess accuracy. Specifically, negative ΔD values indicated vertical dimension underestimation. Given that non-normally distributed data were analyzed using medians [interquartile ranges (IQR)], trueness (median ΔD) and precision (IQR) were evaluated. The interaction effect between the registration method and the position of the measurement items was evaluated by using the generalized linear model. The accuracy was compared overall by the Kruskal-Wallis test with the two-sided significance level of α=0.05. For pairwise comparisons, post-hoc tests were conducted by Dunn′s t-test with the Bonferroni correction for the significance level. Results:The accuracy of VOR was affected by registration method ( P<0.05), with a significant position×registration method interaction observed ( P<0.05). In particular, in all four groups, only the bilateral registration group showed trueness of less than 0.1 mm for both free-end edentulism and the single tooth defect, with ΔD16-46, ΔD25-35, ΔD26-36, and ΔD27-37 being 0.059 (0.015), -0.082 (0.052), -0.065 (0.032), -0.070 (0.050) mm, respectively. Moreover, trueness in free-end edentulism showed negative values across all groups, with the largest negative deviations observed in the right-side registration group, with ΔD25-35, ΔD26-36 and ΔD27-37 being -0.410 (0.174), -0.442 (0.225), -0.439 (0.262) mm, respectively. Conclusions:In fully digital workflows of implant restorations for mandibular free-end edentulism with multiple missing teeth, registration method critically influences VOR accuracy. While four registration methods exhibited underestimation of occlusal vertical dimension, bilateral registration achieved the highest accuracy.

OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of robot-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention (R-PCI) compared to traditional manual percutaneous coronary intervention (M-PCI).
METHODS:
This prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled, non-inferior clinical trial enrolled patients with coronary heart disease who met the inclusion criteria and had indications for elective percutaneous coronary intervention. Participants were randomly assigned to either the R-PCI group or the M-PCI group. Primary endpoints were clinical and technical success rates. Clinical success was defined as visually estimated residual post-percutaneous coronary intervention stenosis < 30% with no 30-day major adverse cardiac events. Technical success in the R-PCI group was defined as successful completion of percutaneous coronary intervention using the ETcath200 robot-assisted system, without conversion to M-PCI in the event of a guidewire or balloon/stent catheter that was unable to cross the vessel or was poorly supported by the catheter. Secondary endpoints included total procedure time, percutaneous coronary intervention procedure time, fluoroscopy time, contrast volume, operator radiation exposure, air kerma, and dose-area product.
RESULTS:
The trial enrolled 152 patients (R-PCI: 73 patients, M-PCI: 79 patients). Lesions were predominantly B2/C type (73.6%). Both groups achieved 100% clinical success rate. No major adverse cardiac events occurred during the 30-day follow-up. The R-PCI group had a technical success rate of 100%. The R-PCI group had longer total procedure and fluoroscopy times, but lower operator radiation exposure. The percutaneous coronary intervention procedure time, contrast volume, air kerma, and dose-area product were similar between the two groups.
CONCLUSIONS
For certain complex lesions, performing percutaneous coronary intervention using the ETcath200 robot-assisted system is safe and effective and does not result in conversion to M-PCI.
