Processing of Chinese medicinals with vinegar is one of the characteristic processing techniques. Vinegar is vital for the quality of vinegar-processed decoction pieces. However, there have been no specified standards for adjuvants. Through consulting relevant literature and monographs, we comprehensively reviewed the historical evolution of processing with vinegar in records, selection and application of vinegar, and summarized the relevant standards and current status of vinegar as an adjuvant in China. According to the records in literature, vinegar is effective in activating blood, moving qi, dispersing blood stasis, removing toxin, promoting appetite, and nourishing the liver. Traditionally, rice vinegar is chosen in processing. Nowadays, the vinegar made from rice under solid-state fermentation should be chosen. At present, only food standards can be taken for reference for vinegar in the processing. Integrative and specific inspection indicators are lacking, so the standards for adjuvants need to be improved urgently. In addition, the inadequacy in quality control and management is also a major problem to be solved. Through literature research, we reviewed the historical evolution and research advance in vinegar to provide a reference for the standardization and further research of vinegar used in the Chinese medicinal processing.

Objective To analyze the results of samples testing of Jiangsu Provincial Malaria Diagnostic Reference Laboratory in 2017, so as to provide the evidence for improving the malaria diagnostic performance in this province. Methods The samples of reported malaria cases in Jiangsu were collected by the provincial reference laboratory (PRL) in 2017. The microscopy and nucleic acid test were performed to confirm the infection of Plasmodium species of each case, while Plasmodium antigen tests (rapid diagnostic test, RDT) were performed as well. The detection results were analyzed among different areas and different species. Results Totally 242 malaria cases were reported and the samples were collected by PRL in 2017. A total of 239 cases were confirmed Plasmodium infections, including 163 cases of Plasmodium falciparum infection, 21 cases of P. vivax infection, 11 cases of P. malariae infection, 43 cases of P. ovale infection, and 1 case of P. falciparum and P. ovale mixed-infection. The diagnostic coincidence rates of reported malaria case in 13 prefectures with districts were all > 80%, and the total coincidence rate was 88.8%. The species diagnostic coincidence rates of P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, and P. ovale were 98.8%, 57.1%, 63.6%, and 81.4% respectively, and the detection rates by RDT to those four species infections were 95.7%, 85.0%, 63.6% and 79.1% respectively. Conclusions In 2017, the malaria diagnostic quality of medical technicians is generally high in Jiangsu Province. However, the diagnostic capacity is slightly different among different regions, and the ability to identify non- P. falciparum parasites remains to be improved. RDT is not ideal for the detection of non-P. falciparum infection. In the current stage of malaria elimination, the malaria diagnostic capacity of technicians in all the sectors should be strengthened and maintained.

To discuss the repair mechanism of Qinbai Qingfei concentrated pellets to AEC-Ⅱ of rats infected by mycoplasma through the observation of the changes and distribution of TGF-β and SP-A in lungs, totally 60 Wistar rats that weighing 80-100 g were collected, with male and female in half. The rats were divided into six groups randomly, with 10 rats each group, namely blank group, model group, positive group and Qinbai Qingfei concentrated pellets high, middle and low dose groups. Rats were infected through nasal intubation drip of MP. After 10 days of administration, serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were collected to detect the concentration of surface activity related protein A (SP-A) by ELISA, left pulmonary tissues of rats were collected to observe the expression and distribution of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and SP-A by immunohistochemistry, and right pulmonary tissues were taken to detect TGF-β and SP-A mRNA expression level by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR). Qinbai Qingfei concentrated pellets can reduce the expression of TGF-β and increase the expression of SP-A in the lung tissues of rats infected by mycoplasma. Specifically, TGF-β was mainly distributed among the lung interstitium, while SPAs were mainly distributed in AEC-II and parts of alveolar macrophage. The level of SP-A was reduced in serum and increased in BALF in rats in Qinbai Qingfei concentrated pellets groups. It was proved that Qinbai Qingfei concentrated pellets can restore the normal morphology and function of the lung by reducing the content of TGF-β to inhibit epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of alveolar type II epithelial cells and increasing the expression of SP-A. Qinbai Qingfei concentrated pellets have the repairing ability to capillary vessel damage caused by MP in lung tissues of rats.

Siraitia grosvenorii is a perennial herb endemic to Guangxi province of China. Its fruit, commonly known as Luo hanguo, and has been used for hundreds of years as a natural sweetener and as a traditional medicine for the treatment of pharyngitis, pharyngeal pain, as well as an anti-tussive remedy in China. Based on ninety-three literary sources, this review summarized the advances in chemistry, biological effects, and toxicity research of S. grosvenorii during the past 30 years. Several different classes of compounds have been isolated or detected from various parts of S. grosvenorii, mainly triterpenoids, flavonoids, polysaccharides, amino acids, and essential oils. Various types of extracts or individual compounds derived from this species exhibited a wide array of biological effects e.g. anti-tussive, phlegm-relieving, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, liver-protecting, glucose-lowering, and anti-microbial. The existing research has shown that extracts and individual compounds from S. grosvenorii are basically non-toxic. Finally, some suggestions for further research on specific chemical and pharmacological properties of S. grosvenorii are proposed in this review.

OBJECTIVETo study in vitro sperm damage caused by trichloroethylene in male rats.
METHODSSperms of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were collected 4 hours after being contaminated by trichloroethylene of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mmol/L in vitro. Giemsa staining was performed to observe the morphological changes of sperms, and flow cytometer was used to detect the changes in mitochondrial membrane potential.
RESULTSThe sperm motilities in 6, 8, and 10 mmol/L trichloroethylene groups decreased significantly compared with that in control group (P <0.01); the sperm aberration rates in 8 and 10 mmol/L trichloroethylene groups were significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.01). With the increase in exposure dose, the proportion of sperms with reduced mitochondrial membrane potential increased, and there were significant differences in sperm apoptosis rate between the 4, 6, 8, and 10 mmol/L trichloroethylene groups and control group (P<0.01).
CONCLUSIONIn vitro exposure to trichloroethylene can reduce sperm motility and increase the aberration rate and apoptosis rate of sperms in male SD rats.

OBJECTIVETo study the history, clinical symptoms, imaging and histology of a rare distinct infantile hemangioma.
METHODS12 patients (5 female, 7 male; aged 18 months - 26 years) diagnosed as non-involuting congenital hemangioma were retrospectively analyzed. The history, imaging, histologic examination and the treatment were collected.
RESULTSMost of the patients had only one lesion which was round or ovoid, flat or plaque-like. The average size was about 5 cm x 6 cm. The overlying skin was usually had coarse telangiectasia with central or peripheral pallor. The skin has a high skin temperature. Magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography angiography and digital subtraction angiography findings were similar to those of common infantile hemangioma. Histologic examination revealed lobular collections of small, thin-walled vessels with a large, often stellate, central vessel. "Hobnailed" endothelial cells lined along the intralobular vessels. Small arteries were observed "shunting" directly into lobular vessels or into abnormal extralobular veins. All lesions were easily excised without recurrence.
CONCLUSIONSNon-involuting congenital hemangioma is a distinct infantile vascular tumor. It should be diagnose early and treated appropriately.

OBJECTIVETo investigate collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) and alpha 2 (COL1A2) gene polymorphisms in Chinese and their relationship with bone mineral density.
METHODSTotalling 628 residents of Han nationality in Guangzhou aged 53.4-15.9 (range 20-79) years were surveyed for COL1A1 and COL1A2 gene genotypes by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Bone mineral density of the lumbar vertebrae, greater trochanter, femur neck and Ward's triangle was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
RESULTSCOL1A1 Sp1 polymorphism was not found in these subjects, and the genotype of all samples were type SS. COL1A2 genotyping revealed the distribution of EE genotype in 49.7%, Ee in 40.9% and ee in 9.4% of the subjects. The frequency distribution of EcoR1 alleles followed the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The mean bone mineral density did no significantly differ among these genotype groups (P>0.05 by analysis of variance).
CONCLUSIONCOL1A1 Sp1 binding site polymorphism is absent and COL1A2 EcoR1 site polymorphism is not associated with bone mineral density in Chinese of Han nationality.
