A complex bidirectional relationship exists between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and psychotic disorders. The co-occurrence of both conditions is associated with higher morbidity and mortality than their individual occurrence. In this case report, we discuss a 36-year-old people with HIV and first-episode psychotic disorder who benefited from the two-injection start regimen of long-acting aripiprazole without side effects in the context with relevant literature. In people with HIV and psychotic symptoms, a thorough evaluation is required to exclude other known causes of psychosis. With a multidisciplinary approach, proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment can reduce morbidity and mortality as well as improve functionality and quality of life. Especially in patients with poor oral medication adherence, the use of the two-injection start regimen of long-acting aripiprazole while considering potential drug–drug interactions and extrapyramidal symptoms may improve treatment compliance and reduce the exacerbation risk of psychotic symptoms caused by medication discontinuation.

Objective: In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between the oxytocin level and the rejection sensitivity, childhood mental traumas, and attachment styles in patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Methods: Participants between the ages of 18–30 were included in the study. The patient group consists of 31 participants and the healthy control group consists of 31 participants. Sociodemographic/Clinical Variables Questionnaire, Relationship Scales Questionnaire, Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire were administered to the participants included in the study. Serum oxytocin levels of the participants were measured using the Elisa method. Results: The oxytocin levels were found to be significantly lower in patients with BPD than in healthy control subjects, whereas the rejection sensitivity and childhood traumas were found to be significantly higher. No difference was found between the patient and control groups in terms of attachment styles, yet it was determined that there may be differences between the oxytocin levels of the BPD patients according to the attachment styles the patients have. Conclusion In conclusion, the findings of this study revealed that the rejection sensitivity in BPD patients is not associated with oxytocin levels and childhood traumas, indicating the need to assess the BPD patients in terms of other biopsychosocial factors related to the etiopathogenesis of BPD.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 40 patients diagnosed with unilateral Wilkes stage III TMJ dysfunction. Clinical parameters, including maximum mouth opening (MMO) and pain during function, were evaluated preoperatively, 6 months, and 1 year after TMJ arthrocentesis. Outcomes were assessed and compared using four sets of success criteria from the following: the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS; MMO ≥35 mm and visual analogue scale [VAS] score ≤3), Murakami et al.'s criteria (MMO >38 mm and VAS score < 2), Emshoff and Rudisch criteria (MMO ≥35 mm and >50% pain reduction), and patient self-reports (self-evaluation of treatment as successful or unsuccessful). RESULTS: Significant improvements in MMO and pain reduction during function were observed between the preoperative period and 6 months and 1 year postoperatively (P < 0.01). The success rates of treatment determined using AAOMS (52.5%), Emshoff and Rudisch criteria (57.5%), and self-reported patient criteria (40.0%) were similar. Application of the Murakami et al. criteria reported the lowest success rate (12.5%). CONCLUSION: The AAOMS and Emshoff and Rudisch criteria are consistent with patient expectations and can be used to assess treatment efficacy.
