1.Factors affecting adoption of a telemedicine device by primary care health workers in the Philippines.

Background and Introduction. The RxBox is a telemedicine device that measures and transmits vital signs to remote experts. It has been deployed to primary care health centers (PCHC) in the Philippines serving disadvantaged populations, to decrease morbidity and mortality due to common diseases and poor access to care. Factors affecting its adoption by healthcare workers is unknown.
Materials and Methods. The study determined social and behavioral factors that affect adoption of a telemedicine device into the clinical workflow using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework. This is a mixed methods research using review of records, survey and focused group discussions.
Results and Discussion. RxBox telemedicine devices were installed in 79 primary care health centers (PCHC) and were used a total of 15,705 times within the study period. An ordinary least squares regression analysis using the combined site and individual-level data showed that among the UTAUT parameters, only compatibility, facilitating conditions, and social factors have significant relationships with intent-to-use of the RxBox. The innovation assisted primary care health workers in their clinical responsibilities, improved the stature of their PCHC in the community, and helped in the care for patients. Training and technology support after deployment as well as encouragement by peer and champions (the PCHC physician, local government leaders) reinforced continuous use after training. Users described the experienced improvements in quality of services provided by the PCHC and the consequent benefits to their patients.
Conclusions. These factors should be accounted for in designing strategies to reinforce health workers' attitudes and enhance support towards acceptance and use of novel telemedicine devices into clinical routine in local health centers. Lessons are immediately useful for local leaders in low- and lower middle-income countries that suffer disproportionately from unnecessary maternal deaths and mortality due to non-communicable diseases. This contributes to the body of knowledge and should bolster national-level advocacy to institute an enabling policy on telehealth Information Communication Technology (ICT) and use of Filipino innovations towards health systems strengthening. Results can be used by implementers, evaluators, and regulators of health ICT, especially in resource-poor settings. Likewise, the study can encourage more research in the field to spur more dynamic local health ICT and biomedical device industries.

Covid-19 which was first documented in the Philippines in January 2020 had spread alarmingly. Severe acute respiratory symptoms were the most common presentation of this novel coronavirus infection. Reports have described neurologic manifestations of this disease involving the central nervous system as well as the peripheral nervous system. However, studies among the pediatric population are limited. In this paper, we present three pediatric patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19, via RT-PCR, presenting with seizures and behavioral changes. Two of these patients have no concomitant respiratory symptoms while the other one had Pediatric Community Acquired Pneumonia. These patients were managed as cases of acute viral meningoencephalitis and were given supportive care.

Neurologic infections are related to chronic and life-long neurologic impairment. We aim
to describe the outcomes of Filipino children with neurologic infections upon, and within one year
from discharge. This data will be useful in developing programs for the prevention and improvement
of outcomes in children with neurologic infections. Methods: This is a multicenter, cross-sectional,
retrospective cohort study at six tertiary hospitals across the Philippines within four years (2007-2010).
A standardized report form was used to collect clinical profile and outcome using inpatient and
outpatient records. Neurologic outcome was classified and staged at 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-months postdischarge. Results: A total of 480 patients were included in the analysis (mean age 4.7 ± 5.3 y), most were bacterial in etiology (275 cases, or 57.3%). Severity of illness on admission (Stage 3, p <0.001) and etiologic agent (viral, p <0.001) were correlated with poor neurologic outcome on discharge. Of the 154 patients that had follow-up, 91 cases were observed to have neurologic deficits (severe, 50; moderate, 29; and mild 12). Twenty patients had improvement of neurologic impairment on subsequent follow-up. 4.Comparative analysis of growth characteristics of Sprague Dawley rats obtained from different sources.

Genetic background in animal models is an intrinsic research variable in biomedical research. Although inbred strains offer genetic uniformity, the outbred stocks, known for genetic variability are often used to develop animal models of human disease. The genetic variability is considered to be even higher when outbred stocks are obtained from different sources. In order to examine the degree of variability of an outbred stock obtained from various sources, Sprague Dawley (SD) rat lines obtained from two sources were evaluated for their growth characteristics. The SD rats from Charles River laboratories (CRL) and Harlan Laboratories (HAR) were monitored for weight gain from the age of 6 weeks to 24 weeks. Food intake was monitored between 13 and 24 weeks. Body composition, organ weights, tibial lengths and blood parameters were measured. There was no difference observed in food intake per 100 gram body weight at most of the time points. CRL rats showed higher body fat mass (49.6%), higher gross liver weights (22.2%), lower testicular weights (30.8%) and lower cholesterol levels (25.4%) than HAR rats. Phenotypic differences may be attributed to genetic heterogeneity of the SD outbred stock between the two sources and represent a significant research variable impacting studies especially related to metabolic diseases. Therefore, in order the minimize research variables for those studies where genetic diversity is not a basis for experimental design, the use of single source genetically uniform inbred animal models is highly recommended over the use of outbred stocks.
