The liver is commonly injured after blunt abdominal trauma. The choice of treatment for liver trauma depends not only on injury severity but also on the patient’s hemodynamic status. Most minor- and moderate-grade liver injuries in hemodynamically stable patients allow for conservative treatment or minimal intervention, while emergency laparotomy is indicated for patients with severe-grade liver trauma and hypotensive shock. We describe a 19-year-old male patient with traumatic shock due to grade IV liver injury and multiple fractures. An emergency laparotomy was performed, but the bleeding could not be controlled, and the patient remained hemodynamically unstable. Hyperacute transarterial embolization was successfully performed. In this case report, we emphasize the importance of transarterial embolization in cases of residual bleeding after initial damage-control surgery, even in hemodynamically unstable patients.

Backgroud: Phacoemulsification with trifocal intraocular lens helps patients achieve clear vision at all distances, reponding their needs and desires. Therefore, we have studied to evaluate the effectiveness of a trifocal intraocular lens. Objectives: (1) To describe the clinical features of cataract patients. (2) To evaluate the outcomes of cataract treatment by phacoemulsification with a trifocal intraocular lens. Methods: A prospective interventional clinical study was conducted on 80 eyes of 68 cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification with a trifocal intraocular lens at the Ophthalmology Center, Hue Central Hospital. Results: At the 3-month postoperative period, 65.0% of the operated eyes had distance vision of 20/25 or better, 52.5% had intermediate vision of 20/25 or better, and 57.5% had near vision of 20/25 or better. The patient satisfaction rate was 91.2%. Conclusion: Phacoemulsification with a trifocal intraocular lens provides high effectiveness in terms of visual acuity and patient satisfaction.

Objective: To evaluate the anti-arthritic effects of Polygonatum kingianum rhizome extract using both in vitro and in vivo models. Methods: Lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages were treated with an ethanol extract of Polygonatum kingianum rhizomes at different concentrations to determine nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production. For in vivo study, Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract was further investigated for its anti-inflammatory effect in a mouse model with collagen antibody-induced arthritis. Phytochemical study of Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract was also performed. Results: Saponins (142 mg/g total yield) was the main component in the Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract. 5α,8α-ergosterol peroxide, (E,E)-9-oxooctadeca-10,12-dienoic acid and 3-(2?-hydroxy-4?-methoxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-8-methyl-chroman-4-one were isolated from the extract. Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract exhibited potential anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting nitric oxide and PGE2 production in RAW 264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The level of arthritis in mice with collagen antibody-induced arthritis was significantly reduced (P<0.01) after treatment with Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract, particularly at a dose of 1?000 mg/kg body weight. Besides, the extract demonstrated the regulatory effects on serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10 in treated mice. Conclusions: Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract has beneficial effects on inflammatory cytokine regulation and PGE2 inhibition in an experimental mouse model with collagen antibody-induced arthritis. The phytochemical screening reveals that the saponin, as the main component, and sterols (daucosterol and 5α,8α-ergosterol peroxide) from Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract may contribute to its promising in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory activities.

Journal of Medical Research 2008;59(6):100-104
Background: Many research works showed that menstruation is caused by the sudden reduction of the estrogens and progesterone to low levels of secretion at the end of the menstrual cycle. However, it should be investigated to which levels the concentration of these two hormones sharply reduces to cause menstruation. Objective: To determine estradiol concentration at the beginning of menstruation, the second day of menstruation and the ending of menstruation during the menstrual cycle. Subject and methods: 30 women with the normal menstrual cycle and 30 women with the long menstrual cycle were used as subjects to determine estradiol concentration at the day at the beginning of menstruation, the second day of menstruation and the last day of menstruation during the menstrual cycle. Result and Conclusion: In the women group with the normal menstrual cycle, the estradiol concentration: at the day at the beginning of menstruation is 159.93 \xb1 51.29 pmol/L, at the second day of menstruation is 170.58 \xb1 46.54 pmol/L and at the lastday of menstruation is 177.55 \xb1 46.42 pmol/L. In women in the group with long menstrual cycle, the estradiol concentration: at the day of beginning of menstruation is 154.55 \xb1 61.60 pmol/L and at the last day of menstruation is 154.55 \xb1 61.60 pmol/L.

Journal of Surgery 2007;57(1):24-29
Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the first laparoscopic surgery that was performed at Cho Ray hospital in September 1992. In 2005, Quang Tri general hospital has performed successfully the first case of laparoscopic appendectomy. Objectives: To access the preliminary results of application on endoscopic surgery in Quang Tri general hospital. Subjects and method: A prospective study was conducted on 140 patients with laparoscopic surgery or retroperitoneal surgery, was performed in Quang Tri general hospital from September, 2005 to April, 2006. Results:Among 140 patients was operated, there was only one case of postoperative intestinal obstructive complication (accounted for 0.7%), no case of death. Operative aged was between 11 and 70 years old. The average surgical time was 65 minutes for cholecystectomy, 35 minutes for appendectomy, 85 minutes for ureterolithotomy, 80 minutes for gynecological diseases. 2 cases of cholecystectomy and appendectomy changed open surgery. Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery is a safe and effective method. It can be developed in provincial hospitals. Quang Tri general hospital has successful preliminary developed the new technique.

Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2004;0(7):27-30
Background: For a long time, the domestic pharmaceutical companies have performed Public Relation (PR) activities to help their business and ensure good relations with their customers. However, the effects of the pharmaceutical companies\u2019 PR activities were not high. Objective: To discover the actual circumstances of PR for a number of pharmaceutical companies in Viet Nam in recent years. Subjects and method: Subjects were the PR activities of pharmaceutical companies through the relations with various public groups. This was a descriptive, retrospective and observational study. Results: The pharmaceutical companies were more and more interested in relations with the public through sponsorship programs. Client relations had been consolidated after health consultancies, customer conferences, workshops, trade fairs, etc\u2026 The image of domestic pharmaceutical companies has appeared more often on mass media. Internal PR activities had built the culture of business and cemented relations between the company and employees. Investment and distribution relations had lagged behind. Conclusions: The PR activities of the pharmaceutical companies appeared to be more varied through relations with various public groups, making contributions to the development of the company.
