1.Systematic review of metabolomic profiles linked to liver cancer

Background:
s/Aims: Increasing evidence indicates that metabolites play a significant role in the pathogenesis of liver cancer and have potential as biomarkers for early detection. This review summarizes the current literature on the utility of metabolomic profiling as a screening strategy for early diagnosis of liver cancer.
Methods:
We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for studies published between 2004 and 2024 that examined metabolite alterations in liver cancer. The metabolites differentially expressed in liver cancer versus healthy controls, cirrhosis, and hepatic B virus cases are summarized. The diagnostic performance of the metabolite-based models was also evaluated, highlighting their potential as early detection biomarkers for liver cancer.
Results:
A total of 96 studies were included in this review, encompassing case-only, case-control, nested case-control, and cohort designs. The analysis identified taurine and taurochenodeoxycholic acid to be consistently associated with an increased risk of liver cancer, supported by findings from both the discovery and validation cohorts. Notably, a diagnostic model incorporating 10 metabolites including taurine and taurochenodeoxycholic acid, achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.86 (95% confidence interval, 0.82-0.88), indicating strong discriminatory power for early liver cancer detection. Nevertheless, heterogeneity across studies was observed, largely owing to differences in biological sample types and metabolomic platforms.
Conclusions
This review highlights the significant roles of taurine and taurochenodeoxycholic acid in liver cancer development. Future research should prioritize the standardization of analytical methodologies, increased sample sizes, and integration of metabolomics with other omics layers to enhance our understanding of liver cancer biology and improve biomarker accuracy and clinical utility.
2.Using Low-Speed Rotation in Heparin Immobilization Improved Antithrombogenicity of Tubular Acellular Vascular Scaffolds

BACKGROUND:
Acellular tubular artery scaffolds offer structural support for vascular regeneration but are inherently limited by poor anticoagulant properties, which increases the risk of thrombus formation following implantation. This thrombogenicity remains a major obstacle to their clinical application, particularly in small-diameter vascular grafts.
METHODS:
To address this challenge, the present study investigates the use of the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly technique for heparin immobilization under low-speed rotation. Utilizing a roller tube system, heparin was immobilized onto decellularized scaffolds through electrostatic interactions facilitated by a DHI-based linker. This low-speed rotation LbL approach enhanced the uniformity and stability of heparin deposition compared to traditional static methods. One, 4, 7, 10, 13 deposition cycles were performed to achieve optimal heparin loading, resulting in scaffolds capable of sustained heparin release over 28 days.
RESULTS:
The heparinized scaffolds exhibited an initial burst release (approximately 80%), followed by a sustained phase with 18.24% ± 0.242 remaining to support prolonged anticoagulant activity. Importantly, the modified scaffolds significantly reduced thrombus formation and exhibited minimal hemolytic activity, indicating improved hemocompatibility. In addition to their antithrombotic properties, the scaffolds also promoted endothelial cell adhesion, which is critical for restoring vascular integrity, regulating vascular tone, and maintaining long-term patency.
CONCLUSION
These findings highlight the efficacy of roller-assisted LbL heparinization as a practical and scalable strategy to enhance the blood compatibility of acellular vascular grafts. This method holds considerable promise for addressing thrombogenicity in vascular tissue engineering and advancing the clinical translation of bioengineered vascular constructs.
3.Successful Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection Using Open Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy for Duodenal Neuroendocrine Tumor

Duodenal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are subepithelial tumors that are difficult to remove endoscopically, particularly when located just beyond the pylorus. This paper reports a case of a successful endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) using open gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for a remnant duodenal NET detected after endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). A 67-year-old male presented with a 5 mm remnant duodenal NET close to the pylorus after EMR for a duodenal polypoid lesion performed four months earlier. Duodenal ESD was performed under conscious sedation using I-type and IT II knives. The tumor adhered to the fibrotic tissue, and the submucosal cushion was insufficient. Open gastric POEM was performed concurrently during ESD, resulting in the complete resection of the NET. This case suggests that while challenging, open gastric POEM can serve as a valuable technique for endoscopic resection in cases of early gastric cancer or duodenal masses located around the pylorus.
4.Update on antibiotic resistance of common pathogenical bacteria isolated in Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital

Backgroud: The aim of this study is to update on antibiotic resistance of common pathogenical bacteria isolated in Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital (Hue UMP Hospital). Methodology: Use of the agar disk diffusion method to test the susceptibility to antimicrobial agents of 3709 bacterial strains from infected patients hospitalized in Hue UMP Hospital in 2020 - 2022. Results: Among 3709 strains of pathogenical bacteria isolated, S.aureus was found with the rate of 29.9%, followed by E. coli (24.5%), Pseudomonas aeruginasa (17.8%), Enterococcus spp. (11.8%), Klebsiella spp (9.7%) and Acinetobacter spp (4.1%). The proportion of bacterial isolates has changed, but Staphylococcus aureus is still highest rate. S.aureus is resistant to many antibiotics, but MRSA strains have decreased significantly, from 73.3% in 2020 to 62.5% in 2022. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was resistant to some of the group A recommended antibiotics such as ceftazidime, piperacillin-tazobactam with the rate of 56.6% and 48.7%. The percentage of E. coli with ESBL strains (+) was at 28.2% - 30.3%. Enterococus spp strains are still sensitive to vancomycin (83.1% - 91.9%). The rate of Klebsiella ESBL (+) is only 6.9% to 8.2%. The strains of Acinetobacter spp were highly resistant to Piperacillin (100%) and Ceftriaxone (96.5%) but they are still sensitive to imipenems 70 - 71%, highly sensitive to Doxycillin (95.2%) and Cefotaxime (88.4%). Conclusion: Many bacterial strains are resistant to many commonly antibiotics. Providing timely, regular, and effective management of antibiotic resistance patterns for common pathogenic bacteria in hospitals, will help reduce the risk of bacterial resistance.

BACKGROUND: In order to provide essential scientific evidence on the population's health status and social health determinants as well as the current capacity of the health care system in Vietnam to health policy makers and managers, Vietnam Ministry of Health, Hanoi University of Public Health, Hanoi Medical University, and Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy collaborated with Seoul National University (Korea) and conducted a health system survey in the Quoc Oai district (of Hanoi capital) that represented northern rural Vietnam. METHODS: The study design was a cross-sectional study. The survey covered different topics (more than 200 questions) and was administered in three separate questionnaires: 1) Basic information of all household members; 2) Household characteristics; and 3) Individual characteristics. Socio-demographic characteristics among the households and individuals were collected from 2,400 households sampled by multi-stage cluster sampling method: more than 200 questions. RESULTS: The household size of Quoc Oai was larger than the national average and there was no significant difference in gender composition. In addition, the proportions of pre-elderly, age 55–64, and elderly group (65 years old and over) were higher than the national population statistics. In this context, demographic transition has begun in Quoc Oai. CONCLUSION: This study design description provides the basic information about a baseline survey of a future prospective cohort (as a part of a collaborative project on strengthening the health system in Vietnam) to the prospective data user of this survey.

6.Study on equipments in centres for preventive medicine in some provinces and cities

A cross sectional study on real situation of professional equipments was carried out on 11 centers for preventive medicine in some provinces and cities during 2003-2004 periods. The result showed that: the equipment at provincial level was poor in kind, deficient in quantity, backward in quality and rate of amortization of these equipment was high. Part of the professional and auxiliary equipments were bought newly but it wasn’t enough to meet now working demand

7.Microorganic laboratory testing service at provincial centres of preventive medicine

The survey covered 11 cities/provinces with 179 servey copies distributed to staffs involved in microbiological testing during 2003-2004. Results showed that tested microbiological samples of water and food were 790±817 and 699± 552 (x±SD)/year, respectively, with 4-5 testing indicators applying for MPN7-9 tubes. The number of samples for testing microorganism in the environment was still limited. In five years of 2000-2004, epidemics occurred in some provinces like typhoid, cholera and dengue fever. Those were tested for causes making up 88% and the rate of success was high. Some causes for epidemics (typhoid, cholera, dengue fever and pacillary dysentery) can be identified at provincial centres of preventive health.
