1.Retrospective study of cultural biases and their reflections among Korean medical students: a cultural hybridity perspective

Purpose:
Most of studies about racial or ethnic biases among medical students have been conducted in English-speaking developed countries. This study explores the hybridity and transformation of Korean medical students’ biases, arguing that a nation’s identity and culture are constantly in a state of ever-changing hybridity.
Methods:
This research used a qualitative document analysis. The study participants were 600 pre-clinical medical students at two medical colleges in Korea, who enrolled in anti-bias programs and subsequently submitted self-reflection essays. Data collection focused on biases related to race, ethnicity, nationality, and medical practices as doctors. Bhabha’s cultural hybridity concepts guided the coding of the data in order to explore the hybridity and transformation of the students’ biases.
Results:
The students presented cultural biases toward patients and doctors with ambivalence related to a person’s high socioeconomic status and open-mindedness, as well as doctors’ excellence and superiority as Korean authoritative figures. Since the students had ambivalent and complex biases toward patients and doctors, they felt unhomeliness as Korean doctors encountering international patients in Korean clinics. However, after discovering their contradictory assumptions, they transformed their unhomeliness into new hybrid identities. The students’ biases were rarely based on race but instead were based on nationality, specifically national class by national income.
Conclusion
Understanding the changing hybrid nature of identities and culture from a cultural hybridity perspective could help clarify medical students’ complex and changing biases and improve anti-bias education. Korean medical students’ hybridized positions suggest that anti-bias education goes beyond focusing on prestige or racism.
2.Medical students’ experience of culturally diverse family presence during resuscitation simulation

Purpose:
This report describes the development of a simulation scenario for medical student that incorporates cultural diversity within the context of family presence during resuscitation (FPDR).
Methods:
Using a hybrid simulation approach, we designed a scenario focusing on communication with a family that immigrated from Korea to the United States during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The scenario objectives were for learners to perform CPR with family presence, communicate with the family, and understand and negotiate cultural needs. Following a pilot scenario with two inexperienced volunteer medical students as learners, the program was evaluated through anonymous surveys and informal focus group feedback.
Results:
Students noted that this simulation differed from previous experiences as compared with emphasizing family communication rather than patient diagnosis or treatment. Students valued experiencing the practical application of cultural competence concepts. The suggestions for scenario improvement included balancing two student participation roles, adjusting the timeline, and utilizing a standardized family member.
Conclusion
This pilot study suggests that an FPDR simulation program can be effectively repeated with multiple medical students and applied to CPR simulations involving diverse cultural backgrounds.
3.Publication Trends in the Official Journals of Pediatric Dentistry Societies from 2004 to 2023

This study explored the evolving trends in pediatric dentistry research, focusing on the changes in research trends in the Journal of the Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (JKAPD) and comparing them with those in other international journals and previous studies. We selected the JKAPD (Korea), Pediatric Dentistry (PD, USA), European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD, Europe), and The Japanese Journal of Pediatric Dentistry (JJPD, Japan) as subjects for this study, as each one is considered the core academic journals of the corresponding region. Data from the four journals were collected by reviewing articles published over 20 years from 2004 to 2023. Sixteen classification criteria were established, and 4,231 papers were assigned a classification number. This study included 1,205 studies from the JKAPD, 1,320 from the PD, 1,070 from the EAPD, and 636 from the JJPD. Publication trends were similar across the pediatric dental journals; however, the JJPD showed no correlation with other journals. Dental caries and prevention of dental caries were the most published topics in all journals (15.4%), followed by systemic diseases or patients with special health care needs (9.9%), conservative treatment and restorative materials (9.2%), and dental growth and developmental disturbances (8.8%). The thematic distribution of articles in the JKAPD observed in this study is consistent with that of previous studies. Although there were regional variations, the distribution of publication trends did not significantly change before or after the 21st century. This study offers valuable insights for comparing and analyzing trends in domestic and international research and providing an opportunity to examine which social and environmental changes have influenced these trends.
4.Efficacy of Automatic Suction-Type Sonic Toothbrush and Manual Toothbrush in Preschool Children: A Randomized, Controlled Crossover Pilot Study

This study investigated the plaque removal efficacy of a suction-type sonic toothbrush compared to a conventional manual toothbrush in preschool children aged 30 to 59 months. Using a randomized, double-blind, crossover design with a 2-week washout period, 20 pediatric participants were allocated to two study phases, each using either the suction-type sonic toothbrush or the manual toothbrush with caregiver assistance. The plaque removal effectiveness was assessed through the Silness and Löe plaque index and quantitative light-induced fluorescence values, including ΔR30 and ΔR120 indicators of plaque index. The result showed no statistically significant differences in plaque removal efficacy between the two toothbrushes, although both showed similar improvements. Caregiver feedback revealed high acceptability of the suction-type sonic toothbrush due to its convenience and engaging features, such as a light and suction function, which enhanced the tooth brushing experience. Although limited by the short follow-up period and small sample size, the findings suggest that suction-type sonic toothbrushes may offer practical benefits for young children requiring caregiver assistance.
5.Intraosseous xanthoma simultaneously treated with mandibular prognathism using sagittal split ramus osteotomy in the mandible:a case report and literature review

Xanthomas are benign lesions characterized by the aggregation of lipid-laden histiocytes and foamy cells within tissues. Intraosseous xanthomas (IOXs), especially those in the jaw bone, are rare, with only around 50 cases documented. This case report describes an IOX located at an osteotomy site in the mandible during sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). Preoperative radiographs revealed a heterogenic radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in the right ramus. After meticulous curettage of the lesion, proximal and distal segments were fixed in the semi-rigid plates and screws. At the one-year followup, radiographs showed excellent bony union between proximal and distal segments, with no significant interval change. IOXs rarely occur in the jaw.However, their predilection for the posterior mandible suggests that such lesions can be encountered during orthognathic surgery. This report demonstrates the feasibility of performing SSRO directly through the lesion with concurrent curettage without compromising surgical outcomes. This case will contribute to the limited literature on IOX of the jaw bone and its treatment via SSRO as a feasible surgical option in concomitant orthognathic surgery.
6.Applications and challenges of artificial intelligence in obstetrics and gynecology: a narrative review

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), especially deep learning techniques, is revolutionizing obstetrics and gynecology. AI algorithms can analyze complex medical data, including imaging and genomics, to manage high-risk conditions such as placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) and to improve the outcomes of assisted reproductive technology. Despite significant advancements, challenges persist, including issues with data standardization, ethical concerns, and the complexity of implementing deep learning models.Current Concepts: Deep learning has demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing conditions like PAS and fetal cardiac anomalies. It optimizes embryo selection, tailors hormonal therapy, and predicts preterm birth risks using advanced tools such as CADXpert. Additionally, radiomics combined with deep learning enhances magnetic resonance imaging-based diagnosis and prognosis, particularly in endometrial cancer. However, barriers such as limited model interpretability and regulatory compliance continue to restrict widespread implementation.Discussion and Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach involving clinicians, data scientists, and policymakers is crucial to addressing these challenges. Efforts should concentrate on developing standardized datasets, creating explainable models, and establishing robust educational frameworks. Overcoming these barriers will enable precise diagnoses and personalized treatments, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes in obstetrics and gynecology.
7.Applications of artificial intelligence-based computer-assisted diagnosis in breast radiology: a narrative review

Mammography is the standard screening method for breast cancer, proven to reduce mortality. However, its diagnostic performance varies depending on patient characteristics and radiologist expertise. Dense breast tissue, present in approximately 70% of Korean women aged 40 to 59, limits detection by obscuring malignancies. Additionally, optimal interpretation requires extensive training, which is not always achievable. Artificial intelligence-based computer-aided diagnosis (AI-CAD) has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing mammographic accuracy and efficiency.Current Concepts: AI-CAD has shown diagnostic performance comparable to that of experienced radiologists while addressing the limitations of traditional CAD systems, particularly excessive false positives. Studies suggest AI-CAD improves radiologists' accuracy, particularly among those with limited breast imaging experience. In Europe, AI-assisted reading is increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to traditional double reading. In Korea, adoption of AI-CAD is expanding, with systems approved by the Korean Food and Drug Administration currently in clinical use. Recently, one AI-CAD system received conditional non-reimbursement designation, allowing hospitals to use it for up to 5 years while collecting clinical evidence to support future insurance coverage decisions.Discussion and Conclusion: AI-CAD has significant potential to enhance early breast cancer detection while maintaining acceptable false-positive rates, making it a valuable adjunct in screening programs. Beyond improved detection, AI-CAD may optimize workflow efficiency by triaging cases and prioritizing high-risk examinations. However, its integration into clinical practice necessitates standardized guidelines, regulatory oversight, and further validation through large-scale prospective studies. As AI technology continues to advance, ongoing investigation into its role in personalized breast cancer screening is essential.
8.Roles of Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography and High-resolution Vessel-wall Imaging in Evaluating Basilar Artery Perforators: A Case of Bilateral Midbrain Infarction

Bilateral midbrain infarctions are often associated with basilar artery (BA) steno-occlusion, but identifying the stroke etiology is difficult when large vessels appear normal. We present a 90-year-old female with wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Initial diffusion-weighted imaging showed subtle bilateral midbrain lesions, while computed tomography angiography produced normal findings. Vessel-wall imaging and diagnostic angiography identified an abnormal single perforator from the distal BA supplying both sides. This case highlights the importance of these techniques in detecting perforator abnormalities in stroke with unclear etiology.
10.Comparison of Higher-order Aberrations Outcomes between Sutured Scleral Fixation and Modified Yamane Sutureless Scleral Fixation

Purpose:
We investigated the changes in ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) between sutured scleral fixation and modified Yamane sutureless scleral fixation.
Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed 20 patients (20 eyes) who underwent sutured scleral fixation and 22 patients (22 eyes) who underwent modified Yamane sutureless scleral fixation. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and HOAs were measured preoperatively, and at 3 months postoperatively, and the two groups were compared.
Results:
BCVA was significantly improved in both sutured scleral fixation and modified Yamane sutureless scleral fixation (p = 0.038, 0.015, respectively). The internal optic HOAs decreased significantly after scleral fixation both in both groups (p = 0.012, 0.033, respectively). Postoperative internal optic HOAs were significantly higher in modified Yamane sutureless scleral fixation group than in sutured scleral fixation group. (p = 0.034) Postoperative third-order aberrations, coma-like aberrations were significantly higher in modified Yamane sutureless scleral fixation group than in sutured scleral fixation group. (p = 0.032, 0.038, respectively)
Conclusions
Sutured scleral fixation showed more effectively decreased internal optics HOAs. IOL tilt and decentrations correlated with internal HOAs and thus should be avoided particularly in modified Yamane sutureless scleral fixation.
