This study investigated the plaque removal efficacy of a suction-type sonic toothbrush compared to a conventional manual toothbrush in preschool children aged 30 to 59 months. Using a randomized, double-blind, crossover design with a 2-week washout period, 20 pediatric participants were allocated to two study phases, each using either the suction-type sonic toothbrush or the manual toothbrush with caregiver assistance. The plaque removal effectiveness was assessed through the Silness and Löe plaque index and quantitative light-induced fluorescence values, including ΔR30 and ΔR120 indicators of plaque index. The result showed no statistically significant differences in plaque removal efficacy between the two toothbrushes, although both showed similar improvements. Caregiver feedback revealed high acceptability of the suction-type sonic toothbrush due to its convenience and engaging features, such as a light and suction function, which enhanced the tooth brushing experience. Although limited by the short follow-up period and small sample size, the findings suggest that suction-type sonic toothbrushes may offer practical benefits for young children requiring caregiver assistance.

Research on fetal mortality due to congenital anomalies is insufficient, particularly that utilizing data specific to South Korea. Thus, we aimed to investigate the characteristics and risk factors for fetal death due to congenital anomalies in Korea.
Methods:
Fetal deaths registered from 2009-2020 with Statistics Korea were assessed. Fetal charac teristics included gestational age, body weight, sex, and multiple fetuses, while maternal characteri stics included age, educational level, nationality, and place of residence. Risk factors for fetal death were analyzed using simple comparison and logistic regression. Changes in fetal mortality by year were examined using Poisson regression analysis.
Results:
A total of 37,928 fetal deaths occurred, among which 3,758 were classified as congenital anomaly, 710 as non-congenital anomaly, and 33,460 as unknown cause. Fetal mortality for gesta tional weeks 20 to 27 and ≥28 were 75.3% and 24.7%, respectively. The proportion of congenital anomalies among fetal deaths during these gestational age periods is 11.3% and 5.8%. Multiple fetuses, maternal age of <20 years or ≥40 years were identified as risk factors for fetal death due to congenital anomalies. Among the top 30 causes, covering 97.5% of all deaths, unspecified causes were 88.2%, congenital malformations 8.2%, and other causes 2.0%, respectively. Fetal mortality and deaths from congenital anomalies exhibited downward trends.
Conclusion
Fetal deaths due to congenital anomalies showed a decreasing trend, but the risks, such as multiple fetuses and advanced maternal age are increasing in Korea. Therefore, careful monitoring of fetal deaths due to congenital anomalies are essential.

6.Evaluating Measurements: A Comparative Study of Digital and Plaster Models for Orthodontic Applications in Mixed Dentition

This study aimed to assess the accuracy of tooth widths, intermolar widths, and arch lengths acquired through two intraoral scanners, including iTero Element Plus Series (Align Technology, Santa Clara, CA, USA) and Trios 4 (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), specifically on mixed dentition. A total of 30 subjects were divided into 2 groups, each undergoing both alginate impressions and intraoral scanning using either the iTero or Trios scanner. The plaster models were measured with a caliper, while the digital models were measured virtually. In the iTero group, all tooth width measurements exhibited differences compared to the plaster values, except for maxillary left lateral incisors (p = 0.179), mandibular right (p = 0.285), and left (p = 0.073) central incisors. The Trios group did not display significant differences in any of the tooth width measurements. Intermolar width comparisons for both groups indicated differences, except for mandibular primary canine to primary canine values (p = 0.426) in the iTero group. Regarding arch length, the mandibular anterior, maxillary right, and left arch lengths in the iTero group demonstrated larger caliper values than those of iTero. Conversely, in the Trios group, all parameters showed smaller caliper values, especially in upper anterior, maxillary right, mandibular right, and mandibular left arch lengths with significance (p = 0.027, 0.007, 0.003, and 0.047, respectively). Despite the differences between the two groups, digital models might be clinically suitable alternatives for plaster models. Pediatric dentists should carefully assess these differences, as a comprehensive evaluation would result in precise orthodontic treatment planning and favorable outcomes for young patients with mixed dentition.

10.Effect of Counting Error Prevention Training on Operating Room Nurses’ Counting Error Prevention Awareness and Perceptions of Patient Safety

Background:
This study aimed to identify changes in counting error prevention awareness and patient safety perception through counting error prevention education to operating room nurses.
Methods:
This was a one-group, pretest-posttest, quasi-experimental study. The participants were operating room nurses. A total of 46 nurses were recruited, and data was collected between October 1 and 31, 2022. Measures used for this study assessed counting error prevention awareness and patient safety perception. The data were analyzed using paired t-tests.
Results:
The counting error prevention awareness of the participants increased significantly from 3.68 to 3.95 points before and after education, respectively (t=-5.07, P<0.001), while patient safety perception significantly increased from 3.95 to 4.20 points before and after training, respectively (t=-2.68, P=0.010).
Conclusions
Counting error prevention awareness and patient safety perception of operating room nurses prevent fatal damage to patients with surgeries and lower mortality. The results of this study suggest the necessity of various education methods to reduce medical accidents among surgical patients and to raise patient safety perception for operating room nurses.
