Purpose:
This study evaluated long-term trends in gastric cancer epidemiology and survival with a focus on conditional relative survival (CRS).
Materials and Methods:
Using the Korea Central Cancer Registry, we analyzed 665,184 patients who were newly diagnosed with gastric cancer between 1999 and 2022.The study period was divided into four intervals: Period I (1999–2005), Period II (2006–2011), Period III (2012–2017), and Period IV (2018–2022). Temporal trends in the incidence and mortality were assessed using crude and age-standardized rates. Relative survival was estimated using the Ederer II method, and the 5-year CRS was calculated according to the survival duration after diagnosis.
Results:
The incidence of gastric cancer increased until 2011 and subsequently declined, with a marked decrease observed in 2020. Individuals aged ≥70 years consistently had the highest incidence rates. Mortality rates showed a sustained decline throughout the study period. The overall 5-year relative survival improved from 69.8% in Period II to 78.4% in Period IV. The 5-year CRS increased from 86.1% at 1 year after diagnosis to 96.3% at 5 years.Patients with localized stage maintained a 5-year CRS above 95% at 1 year after diagnosis, whereas those with regional and distant stages showed 5-year CRS that consistently remained below 95%.
Conclusions
The incidence and mortality rates of gastric cancer in Korea have declined over the past two decades, accompanied by improved survival outcomes. The CRS analysis suggests that long-term follow-up is warranted, with the optimal duration varying according to patient characteristics.

Subperiosteal ganglion is a rare lesion with an unclear pathogenesis that develops from the periosteum with cortical erosion. It most commonly occurs in the tibia and occurs less frequently in the upper extremities. We report a case of subperiosteal ganglion at the ulnar side of the metaphysis of the distal radius in a 27-year-old woman, and we describe the diagnosis and treatment.

As fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures gain popularity, the associated health threats from radiation exposure to interventionalists during these procedures are increasing. Therefore, an understanding of the potential risks of radiation and careful consideration on minimizing exposure to radiation during the procedures are of paramount importance. The Korean Pancreatobiliary Association has developed a clinical practice guideline to minimize radiation exposure during fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures. This guideline provides recommendations to deal with the risk of radiation exposure to interventionalists who perform fluoroscopy-guided procedures, and emphasizes the importance of proper and practical approaches to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure.

Journal of Gastric Cancer 2024;24(3):316-326
Purpose:
This study was performed to assess the lifestyle-related behaviors of patients with gastric cancer (GC) and to investigate the associations between the time since GC diagnosis and these behaviors.
Materials and Methods:
This study included 29,478 adults (including 338 patients with GC) aged ≥ 40 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014-2021. Multiple logistic regression analysis explored the associations between the time since GC diagnosis (patients diagnosed with GC less than 5 years ago [<5 years group] and those diagnosed with GC 5 or more than years ago [≥5 years group]) and lifestyle factors.Subgroup analyses were conducted based on age and sex.
Results:
The current smoking rate was not lower in the GC group than in the healthy group, regardless of time since diagnosis. Compared to the healthy controls, monthly alcohol intake was lower in the <5 years group (odds ratio [OR], 0.450; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.275–0.736). The ≥5 years group showed a lower rate of strength training (OR, 0.548; CI, 0.359–0.838), compared with the healthy control group. Subgroup analysis focusing on the ≥5 years group revealed a significantly lower rate of strength training, particularly in patients aged ≥65 years and male patients (OR, 0.519 and 0.553; CI, 0.302–0.890 and 0.340–0.901, respectively).
Conclusions
Clinicians should continue educating patients on lifestyle behavior modifications, particularly alcohol abstinence, even beyond 5 years after GC diagnosis.Education on strength training is especially important for patients ≥65 years or male patients.
