The need to implement vegetarian meal plans in school meals to promote sustainable eating among adolescents is increasing. This study examined students’ perceptions of a vegetarian day, and its association with dietary quality. This study surveyed 372 adolescents (230 males, 142 females) in Daejeon, Korea, assessing their perceptions of a vegetarian day and their nutrition quotient for adolescents (NQ-A). The perception of a vegetarian day was 3.21 out of 5, showing no significant gender difference. Among all participants, the item “I think a vegetarian day will help students’ health” received the highest score (3.67). The item “I think a vegetarian day is about respecting the diversity of students” scored significantly higher among females than males, whereas the item “It is better to include meat substitutes as well as mixed grains, beans, vegetables and fruits on a vegetarian day” scored lower among females than males. Correlation analysis showed that the perceptions of a vegetarian day were significantly positively associated with the total NQ-A score and the moderation domain score in all participants. Based on these findings, efforts should be made to enhance the positive perceptions of a vegetarian day among adolescents while exploring various approaches to its effective implementation.

Purpose: Dominant optic atrophy is one of the most common hereditary optic neuropathies, causing progressive bilateral vision loss that begins early in life. Optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) gene mutation brings about mitochondrial dysfunction, which results in clinical manifestations of dominant optic atrophy. Here, we report a case of dominant optic atrophy caused by the c.1334G>A mutation of the OPA1 gene, the first known case in Korea to our knowledge.Case summary: A 12-year-old female patient with no specific medical history or systemic symptoms visited our clinic complaining of a progressive decrease in vision in either eye. Slit-lamp microscopy, intraocular pressure, ocular motility, and pupil reflex were normal. However, her best-corrected visual acuity in both eyes was 20/100, and her color vision was reduced to 8/12 in Ishihara’s test. Fundus examination showed temporal pallor of the optic nerve head in both eyes, and a corresponding cecocentral scotoma was observed on Goldmann visual field examination. Optical coherence tomography revealed significant thinning of the peripapillary retinal fiber layer and macular ganglion cell layer in both eyes. Genetic examination confirmed the c.1334G>A mutation of the OPA1 gene. Conclusions We report a case of dominant optic nerve atrophy caused by c.1334G>A mutation of the OPA1 gene and its clinical manifestations.

Hyaluronic acid (HA), a ligand of CD44, accumulates in some types of tumors and is responsible for tumor progression. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (NRF2) regulates cytoprotective genes and drug transporters, which promotes therapy resistance in tumors. Previously, we showed that high levels of CD44 are associated with NRF2 activation in cancer stem like-cells. Herein, we demonstrate that HA production was increased in doxorubicin-resistant breast cancer MCF7 cells (MCF7-DR) via the upregulation of HA synthase-2 (HAS2). HA incubation increased NRF2, aldo-keto reductase 1C1 (AKR1C1), and multidrug resistance gene 1 (MDR1) levels. Silencing of HAS2 or CD44 suppressed NRF2 signaling in MCF7-DR, which was accompanied by increased doxorubicin sensitivity. The treatment with a HAS2 inhibitor, 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), decreased NRF2, AKR1C1, and MDR1 levels in MCF7-DR. Subsequently, 4-MU treatment inhibited sphere formation and doxorubicin resistance in MCF7-DR. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data analysis across 32 types of tumors indicates the amplification of HAS2 gene is a common genetic alteration and is negatively correlated with the overall survival rate. In addition, high HAS2 mRNA levels are associated with increased NRF2 signaling and poor clinical outcome in breast cancer patients. Collectively, these indicate that HAS2 elevation contributes to chemoresistance and sphere formation capacity of drug-resistant MCF7 cells by activating CD44/ NRF2 signaling, suggesting a potential benefit of HAS2 inhibition.

Background: and PurposeIn 2021, lung cancer in school food workers was first recognized as an occupational cancer. The classification of the carcinogenicity of cooking fumes by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was based on Chinese epidemiological data. This study aimed to determine the hazard levels of school cooking fumes in Korea. Materials and Methods: Based on public school cafeterias in one area, 25 locations were selected for the survey according to the number per school type, ventilation states, and environmental pre-assessments of cafeterias. Two inside cooking areas using a heat source and one outside cooking area were selected as control measurement points. Measurements of CO, CO2, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), including benzene, formaldehyde, and particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PM1, respectively), were taken. The concentrations and patterns of each substance in the kitchens were compared with the outdoor air quality.ResultKnown carcinogens, such as the concentrations of PAHs, formaldehyde, TVOC (benzene), and particulate matter in school cooking fumes, were all detected at similar or slightly higher levels than those found outside. Additionally, substances were detected at relatively low concentrations compared to the Chinese cooking fumes reported in the literature. However, the short-term exposure to high concentrations of CO (or composite exposure with CO2) and PM2.5 in this study were shown. Conclusion The school cooking fumes in South Korea was a relatively less harmful than Chinese cooking fumes, however short-term, high exposure of toxic substances can cause a critical health effect.

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is a systemic fibro-inflammatory disease characterized by pathologic findings in various organs. Imaging is critical for the diagnosis and treatment assessment of patients with IgG4-related disease. In this pictorial essay, we review the key features of multiple imaging modalities, typical pathologic findings, and differential diagnosis of IgG4-related disease. This systematic pictorial review can further our understanding of the broad-spectrum manifestations of this disease.

Background/Aims: To date, studies on various noninvasive techniques have been suggested to evaluate the degree of liver fibrosis. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of se-rum asialo α1-acid glycoprotein (AsAGP) in the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis compared with chronic hepatitis for clinically useful result. Methods: We conducted a case-control study of 96 patients with chronic liver disease. Chronic hepatitis was defined as the presence of chronic liver disease on ultrasonography, with a liver stiffness of less than 5.0 kPa as shown on magnetic resonance elastography (MRE). Liver cirrho-sis was defined as liver stiffness of more than 5.0 kPa on MRE. The serum AsAGP concentration was compared between the two groups. Results: Serum AsAGP levels were significantly higher in patients with cirrhosis than in those with chronic hepatitis (1.83 μg/mL vs 1.42 μg/mL, p<0.001). Additionally, when comparing pa-tients in each cirrhotic group (Child-Pugh grades A, B, and C) to those with chronic hepatitis, AsAGP levels were significantly higher in all the cirrhotic groups (p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001, respectively). The sensitivity and specificity of AsAGP for detecting cirrhosis were 79.2% and 64.6%, respectively, and the area under the curve value was 0.733. The best diagnostic cutoff to predict cirrhosis was 1.4 μg/mL. AsAGP and bilirubin were found to be independent risk factors for the prediction of cirrhosis in the logistic regression analysis. Conclusions Serum AsAGP showed an acceptable diagnostic performance in predicting liver cirrhosis.

Purpose: To evaluate the findings and frequencies of retinal microvascular abnormalities observed in patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis. Methods: Fundus photographs of 61 patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis and 61 controls without systemic disease or ophthalmic abnormalities were retrospectively compared and analyzed. The presence or absence of retinal microvascular abnormalities in the form of simple vascular tortuosity, corkscrew retinal vessels, and moyamoya-like patterns was confirmed, and the diagnostic sensitivity, diagnostic specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy for type 1 neurofibromatosis were analyzed. Results: Retinal microvascular abnormalities were found in 19.7% (12 patients) of the patient group, There was no cases in the control group, thus. The difference between the patient group and the control group was significant (p = 0.0003). Of the 12 patients with abnormalities, 10 exhibited simple vascular tortuosity, one had corkscrew retinal vessels, and one exhibited both findings. The diagnostic sensitivity of retinal microvascular abnormalities for type 1 neurofibromatosis was 23.53%, the diagnostic specificity was 100%, the positive predictive value was 100%, and the negative predictive value was 61%. The diagnostic accuracy was 65.18%, which was slightly lower than the 79.5% diagnostic accuracy for the Lisch nodule, but the diagnostic accuracy was comparable to that of neurofibroma (68.03%). Conclusion Retinal microvascular abnormalities were observed in 19.7% of type 1 neurofibromatosis patients, of which simple vascular tortuosity was the most common. Considering that retinal microvascular abnormalities were not observed at all in the control group, and the diagnostic accuracy was 65.18%, this type of abnormality could be included as a new ophthalmic clinical feature of type 1 neurofibromatosis.
