OBJECTIVES:
Kudoa septempunctata has been identified as the causative agent of food poisoning following the consumption of raw farmed Paralichthys olivaceus. However, cohort studies providing robust evidence for an association between K. septempunctata and gastrointestinal symptoms remain limited. This prospective cohort study investigated the association between the consumption of K. septempunctata–infected farmed P. olivaceus and the occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms.
METHODS:
Individuals who purchased raw farmed P. olivaceus between 2020 and 2021 were selected as the study population. Study data included 2 rounds of questionnaire surveys administered before and after consumption, 2 muscle specimens obtained from each purchased fish, and human biological specimens collected from individuals who developed gastrointestinal symptoms within 24 hours after consumption. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and t-test, and the association between consumption of K. septempunctata–infected farmed P. olivaceus and gastrointestinal symptoms was evaluated using relative risk estimates between exposure groups.
RESULTS:
The relative risk of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with exposure to K. septempunctata–infected P. olivaceus ranged from 71.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 27.0 to 178.6) to 124.5 (95% CI, 43.5 to 355.0) across the 2 case definitions. A strong and statistically significant association was observed between exposure to K. septempunctata–infected P. olivaceus and the development of acute gastrointestinal symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS
These findings indicate both an association and a causal relationship between consumption of K. septempunctata–infected farmed P. olivaceus and the onset of gastrointestinal symptoms.

Although histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is considered a therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), its role in cholinergic dysfunction in AD patients remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of (E)-3-(2-(4-fluorostyryl)thiazol-4-yl)-N-hydroxypropanamide (4-FHA), a new synthetic HDAC6 inhibitor, on cognitive and memory impairments in a scopolamine-induced-AD mouse model. Behaviorally, 4-FHA improved scopolamine-induced memory impairments in the Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests. In addition, 4-FHA ameliorated scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments in the novel object recognition and place recognition tests. Furthermore, 4-FHA increased acetylation of α-tubulin (a major HDAC6 substrate); the expression of BDNF; and the phosphorylation of ERK 1/2, CREB, and ChAT in the hippocampus of scopolamine-treated mice. In summary, according to our data 4-FHA, an HDAC6 inhibitor, improved the cognitive and memory deficits of the AD mouse model by normalizing BDNF signaling and synaptic transmission, suggesting that 4-FHA might be a potential therapeutic candidate for AD.

Background:
Primary cutaneous CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders (pcCD30-LPDs) are a diseases with various clinical and prognostic characteristics.
Objective:
Increasing our knowledge of the clinical characteristics of pcCD30-LPDs and identifying potential prognostic variables in an Asian population.
Methods:
Clinicopathological features and survival data of pcCD30-LPD cases obtained from 22 hospitals in South Korea were examined.
Results:
A total of 413 cases of pcCD30-LPDs (lymphomatoid papulosis [LYP], n=237; primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma [C-ALCL], n=176) were included. Ninety percent of LYP patients and roughly 50% of C-ALCL patients presented with multiple skin lesions. Both LYP and C-ALCL affected the lower limbs most frequently. Multiplicity and advanced T stage of LYP lesions were associated with a chronic course longer than 6 months. Clinical morphology with patch lesions and elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase were significantly associated with LPDs during follow-up in LYP patients. Extracutaneous involvement of C-ALCL occurred in 13.2% of patients. Lesions larger than 5 cm and increased serum lactate dehydrogenase were associated with a poor prognosis in C-ALCL. The survival of patients with C-ALCL was unaffected by the anatomical locations of skin lesions or other pathological factors.
Conclusion
The multiplicity or size of skin lesions was associated with a chronic course of LYP and survival among patients with C-ALCL.

International Neurourology Journal 2024;28(Suppl 2):S82-89
Purpose:
Predicting improvements in voiding symptoms following deobstructive surgery for male lower urinary tract symptoms/benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH) is challenging when detrusor contractility is impaired. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence model that predicts symptom improvement after holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), focusing on changes in maximum flow rate (MFR) and voiding efficiency (VE) 1-month postsurgery.
Methods:
We reviewed 1,933 patients who underwent HoLEP at Samsung Medical Center from July 2008 to January 2024. The study employed a deep neural network (DNN) for multiclass classification to predict changes in MFR and VE, each divided into 3 categories. For comparison, additional machine learning (ML) models such as extreme gradient boosting, random forest classification, and support vector machine were utilized. To address class imbalance, we applied the least squares method and multitask learning.
Results:
A total of 1,142 patients with complete data were included in the study, with 992 allocated for model training and 150 for external validation. In predicting MFR, the DNN achieved a microaverage area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.884±0.006, sensitivity of 0.783±0.020, and specificity of 0.891±0.010. For VE prediction, the microaverage AUC was 0.817±0.007, with sensitivity and specificity values of 0.660±0.014 and 0.830±0.007, respectively. These results indicate that the DNN's predictive performance was superior to that of other ML models.
Conclusions
The DNN model provides detailed and accurate predictions for recovery after HoLEP, providing valuable insights for clinicians managing patients with LUTS/BPH.

Background:
Daily usage of facial masks during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic influenced on facial dermatoses.
Objective:
This study investigated the impact of mask-wearing habits on facial dermatoses.
Methods:
A nationwide, observational, questionnaire-based survey was conducted from July through August 2021, involving 20 hospitals in Korea.
Results:
Among 1,958 facial dermatoses, 75.9% of patients experienced aggravation or development of new-onset facial dermatoses after wearing masks. In aggravated or newly developed acne patients (543 out of 743), associated factors were healthcare provider, female gender, and a long duration of mask-wearing. Irritating symptoms, xerosis, and hyperpigmentation were more frequently observed in this group. Aggravated or newly developed rosacea patients (515 out of 660) were likely to be female, young, and have a long duration of mask-wearing per day. Seborrheic dermatitis patients who experienced aggravation or de novo development (132 out of 184) were younger, and they more frequently involved the chin and jaw in addition to the nasolabial folds and both cheeks. Contact dermatitis patients (132 out of 147) with aggravation or de novo development tended to be female, involve both cheeks, and complain of pruritus. Aggravated or newly developed atopic dermatitis patients (165 out of 224) were more likely to be female, and had a higher baseline investigator global assessment score before mask-wearing.
Conclusion
Clinical features and factors related to aggravation were different according to the types of facial dermatoses.
