Objective To investigate the association between physical activity levels and blood lipids among college freshmen, and to provide scientific evidence for the health management of college freshmen. Methods An electronic questionnaire survey on physical activity was conducted on freshmen of a university, and fasting blood biochemical indicators were detected. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form was used to evaluate the physical activity levels of the participants. Dyslipidemia was defined as an abnormality in any one of the following serum lipid parameters: total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), or non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Binary logistic regression and stratified analyses were employed to explore the relationship between physical activity and blood lipids. Results A total of 3 401 participants were included, with an average age of 18.45 ± 0.92 years, and 60.5% were female. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 17.7%, with a higher rate among males (22.1%) than females (14.8%). After adjusting for confounding factors related to blood lipids, high-intensity physical activity was negatively associated with the risk of elevated LDL-C among males (OR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.13–0.99, P = 0.049). Conclusion Among freshmen at a medical college in Hubei Province, high-intensity physical activity is negatively associated with the risk of elevated LDL-C in males, but this association needs to be further confirmed by larger prospective cohort studies.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic etiology of 46 Chinese pedigrees affected with Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) and provide genetic counseling and reproductive intervention. METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were carried out on 87 patients from the 46 pedigrees to analyze the variants of EXT1 and EXT2 genes. Pathogenicity of the variants was assessed based on the guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics and Association for Molecular Pathology (ACMG/AMP). Prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) were provided for couples with identified pathogenic mutations. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the hospital (Ethics No.: LL-SC-SG-2014-010). RESULTS: In total 17 and 22 pathogenic variants were respectively identified in the EXT1 and EXT2 genes, among which 5 EXT1 and 12 EXT2 variants were unreported previously. Three patients with no family history were found to harbor de novo variants of the EXT1 gene. Twenty nine couples had opted for PGT or underwent prenatal diagnosis following natural conception, and 17 healthy babies were born. CONCLUSION This study has clarified the genetic etiology of 45 HME pedigrees and identified 17 novel variants, which has enriched the mutational spectrum of the EXT1 and EXT2 genes. Reproductive intervention through PGT and prenatal diagnosis have prevented the recurrence of HME in these families.

ObjectiveTo construct a risk prediction model for frequent acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） under disease-syndrome combination， thus providing decision support for precise clinical intervention. MethodsA total of 2 029 patients with acute exacerbations of COPD admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Chinese Medicine from January 2020 to August 2024 were retrospectively included. These patients were classified into groups of frequent acute exacerbations （≥2 times/year） and infrequent acute exacerbations （<2 times/year） according to the hospitalization times per year. Risk factors were screened by LASSO regression combined with logistic regression， and a nomogram model was constructed. The model performance was assessed based on the area under the curve （AUC）， calibration curves， and decision curve analysis （DCA）. ResultsThe differences in baseline characteristics between the frequent acute exacerbations group （1 196 cases） and infrequent acute exacerbations group （833 cases） were not statistically significant. LASSO regression combined with multivariate logistic regression screened the following independent risk factors： body mass index （BMI）， hospitalization days， number of smoking years， place of residence， use of noninvasive ventilators， oxygen-demanding therapy， liver cirrhosis， use of systemic glucocorticosteroids， and traditional Chinese medicine syndrome （phlegm and stasis obstructing the lung）. The nomogram model showed good discrimination and calibration in both the training set （AUC=0.748） and validation set （AUC=0.774）. ConclusionThe risk prediction model for frequent acute exacerbations of COPD， integrating traditional Chinese medicine syndrome， constructed in this study has high accuracy. It can provide a scientific basis for early clinical identification of high-risk patients and individualized intervention.

This paper compares the philosophical structures of doctrine of five evolutive phases and six climate factors and The Book of Changes （《周易》） from three dimensions of "time， position， and virtue"， aiming to reveal the penetration of The Book of Changes thought in the formation of the doctrine of five evolutive phases and six climate factors and its own theoretical transformation. Both the "doctrine" and the "book" centered on "time"， recognizing temporal order through observation of celestial phenomena and calendar formulation. The Book of Changes emphasizes "seizing the timely moment" to master the principles of change in all things， while doctrine of five evolutive phases and six climate factors focuses on "understanding time" to clarify how qi relates to temporal phases. Regarding position， both treat it as time-derived and philosophically significant within a six-tier structure. The The Book of Changes uses yao （爻） positions for judging auspiciousness， inauspiciousness， regret and distress， with such judgement permeating the overall structure of the hexagram； the doctrine of five evolutive phases and six climate factors uses qi positions， where "dangwei （当位）" denotes normative qi transformation governing the overall pattern. Both hold that "virtue" arises from time‑position harmony， representing conformity to time and suitability to position. In The Book of Changes， "virtue" serves to encapsulate the attributes of things and the principles of heaven and earth， whereas the doctrine of five evolutive phases and six climate factors furhter extends "virtue" to denote the normative state of qi transformation. Thus， the intellectural structure of time， position and virtue in the doctrine of five evolutive phases and six climate factors was influenced by Yijing scholarship， within which it completed its theoretical evolution distinctly.

Objective Magnetoreception, the remarkable ability of diverse animals to sense and utilize the geomagnetic field for orientation and navigation, remains a molecularly unresolved mystery in sensory biology. The putative magnetoreceptor (MagR, previously known as IscA1) is a highly conserved iron-sulfur protein implicated in both magnetoreception and iron metabolism; however, the functional diversity among its cross-species homologs remains poorly understood. Cellular morphology is a key genetically determined trait that can be altered through genetic or environmental modifications—a process known as cell morphology engineering. Constructing engineered cells with specific morphological features and magnetic sensitivity to achieve remote, non-invasive magnetic modulation represents a crucial goal in this field with significant application potential. Therefore, this study aims to systematically investigate the effects of MagR heterologous expression on bacterial morphology and magnetic sensing capabilities, screen for MagR-based magnetically sensitive morphology engineering pathways, and reveal the underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods We systematically screened 28 MagR homologous genes from diverse prokaryotic and animal taxa to evaluate their expression and corresponding phenotypic effects in Escherichia coli (E. coli). To compare the differential magnetic responses among bacteria expressing various recombinant MagR proteins, we utilized high-throughput automated bright-field microscopic imaging and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, comprehensive biochemical and biophysical characterizations of iron and iron-sulfur cluster binding were performed using Ferrozine colorimetric assays, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Additionally, 100 mT static magnetic field (SMF) exposure experiments were conducted to assess magnetically tunable phenotypes, while the intrinsic magnetic properties of purified MagR proteins were directly measured using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Results Our results demonstrated that the heterologous expression of MagR homologs induced varying degrees of bacterial filamentation. From this comprehensive screen, two distinct morphological patterns were identified: hydra (Hydra vulgaris) MagR (hyMagR) promoted uniform cell elongation and filamentation, exhibiting robust magnetic sensitivity manifested as significantly enhanced filamentation under the 100 mT SMF. In contrast, pigeon (Columba livia) MagR (clMagR) induced only low-frequency, extreme filamentation (sporadically exceeding 80 μm) with a relatively weaker magnetic morphological response. Mechanistically, our data unambiguously proved that these phenotypic differences are primarily driven by distinct iron redox preferences rather than total cellular iron accumulation. Specifically, hyMagR preferentially binds ferrous iron (Fe²⁺), whereas clMagR favors ferric iron (Fe³⁺) and forms more stable iron-sulfur clusters. Intriguingly, although SQUID magnetometry showed that purified clMagR exhibited approximately five-fold higher mass magnetic susceptibility than hyMagR, its cellular magnetic response was weaker. We hypothesize that the Fe²⁺-preferred intracellular environment associated with hyMagR overexpression primes the cell for enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via the Fenton reaction. Exposure to an SMF synergizes with this primed redox state, triggering the bacterial SOS response and upregulating cell division inhibitors to efficiently induce uniform filamentation. Conclusion Our findings identify the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ redox state as a critical determinant of MagR-mediated morphological remodeling and magnetic responsiveness. This discovery suggests a potential strategy for engineering magnetically responsive cellular systems for synthetic biology applications, and provides a plausible framework, which potentially combines intrinsic protein magnetism with redox-state modulation, for further investigating the evolutionary mechanisms of MagR-mediated magnetoreception.

By sorting out the pathogen transmission patterns based on the channels and collaterals system in The Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor （《黄帝内经》）， it is believed that factors such as emotions， diet， and exhaustion-fatigue disturb the qi of the zang-fu organs and channels directly， causing pathogens to transmit from channels to collaterals； pathogens from the nature first invade the head and face， mostly enter through Fengfu （GV16） and transmit along the six channels； cold-dampness from the nature transmits from collaterals to channels， from the exterior to the interior， and spreads along the collaterals， channels， intestines and stomach， five zang organs， and membrane-source. This paper also summarized the characteristics of the disease transmission pattern from collaterals to channels in The Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor， pointing out that diseases manifest different features when pathogens are located in collaterals， channels， membrane-source， or zang-fu organs. It emphasized that in disease treatment， attention should be paid to the identification of early lesions in the meridians， and the important role of therapeutic methods such as acupuncture， daoyin （conduction exercise）， moxibustion， massage and pressing， and tangyun （hot compresses with herbal decoctions） in disease prevention should be brought into play.

Objective: To investigate the association between expression levels of potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily Q member 1 (KCNQ1) gene and gout, so as to provide the basis for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gout. Methods: A total of 179 patients diagnosed with gout at the outpatient department of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital were enrolled in the case group, while 179 healthy individuals matched by age (within 5 years) were selected as the control group. Demographic information, lifestyle, dietary intake and biochemical blood indicators were collected through questionnaires and laboratory tests. The relative expression levels of KCNQ1 gene mRNA were quantified using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of KCNQ1 gene mRNA levels in distinguishing gout. The association between the relative expression level of KCNQ1 gene mRNA and gout, the interaction effects of the relative expression levels of KCNQ1 gene mRNA with dietary intake and biochemical blood indicators on gout were analyzed using a multivariate conditional logistic regression model. Results: There were 112 males (62.57%) and 67 females (37.43%) in the case group, with a mean age of (41.32±10.12) years. There were 98 males (54.75%) and 81 females (45.25%) in the control group, with a mean age of (40.24±7.62) years. The mRNA expression levels of the KCNQ1 gene were higher in the case group compared to the control group (P<0.05). The area under the ROC curve was 0.897 (95%CI: 0.865-0.928). Multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis revealed that KCNQ1 gene mRNA expression levels were positively associated with gout risk (OR=1.430, 95%CI: 1.171-1.747). Significant interactions were observed between KCNQ1 mRNA expression and seafood intake (OR=2.107, 95%CI: 1.175-3.779), KCNQ1 gene mRNA expression and uric acid levels (OR=2.373, 95%CI: 1.366-4.119), as well as between uric acid levels and seafood intake (OR=2.321, 95%CI: 1.159-4.678). Conclusion The expression levels of the KCNQ1 gene may increase the risk of gout and further increase the risk through interaction with seafood intake and uric acid levels.

Neuroscience is a significant frontier discipline within the natural sciences and has become an important interdisciplinary frontier scientific field. Brain is one of the most complex organs in the human body, and its structural and functional analysis is considered the “ultimate frontier” of human self-awareness and exploration of nature. Driven by the strategic layout of “China Brain Project”, Chinese scientists have conducted systematic research focusing on “understanding the brain, simulating the brain, and protecting the brain”. They have made breakthrough progress in areas such as the principles of brain cognition, mechanisms and interventions for brain diseases, brain-like computation, and applications of brain-machine intelligence technology, aiming to enhance brain health through biomedical technology and improve the quality of human life. Due to limited understanding and comprehension of neuroscience, there are still many important unresolved issues in the field of neuroscience, resulting in a lack of effective measures to prevent and protect brain health. Therefore, in addition to actively developing new generation drugs, exploring non pharmacological treatment strategies with better health benefits and higher safety is particularly important. Epidemiological data shows that, exercise is not only an indispensable part of daily life but also an important non-pharmacological approach for protecting brain health and preventing neurodegenerative diseases, forming an emerging research field known as motor neuroscience. Basic research in motor neuroscience primarily focuses on analyzing the dynamic coding mechanisms of neural circuits involved in motor control, breakthroughs in motor neuroscience research depend on the construction of dynamic monitoring systems across temporal and spatial scales. Therefore, high spatiotemporal resolution detection of movement processes and movement-induced changes in brain structure and neural activity signals is an important technical foundation for conducting motor neuroscience research and has developed a set of tools based on traditional neuroscience methods combined with novel motor behavior decoding technologies, providing an innovative technical platform for motor neuroscience research. The protective effect of exercise in neurodegenerative diseases provides broad application prospects for its clinical translation. Applied research in motor neuroscience centers on deciphering the regulatory networks of neuroprotective molecules mediated by exercise. From the perspectives of exercise promoting neurogenesis and regeneration, enhancing synaptic plasticity, modulating neuronal functional activity, and remodeling the molecular homeostasis of the neuronal microenvironment, it aims to improve cognitive function and reduce the incidence of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. This has also advanced research into the molecular regulatory networks mediating exercise-induced neuroprotection and facilitated the clinical application and promotion of exercise rehabilitation strategies. Multidimensional analysis of exercise-regulated neural plasticity is the theoretical basis for elucidating the brain-protective mechanisms mediated by exercise and developing intervention strategies for neurological diseases. Thus,real-time analysis of different neural signals during active exercise is needed to study the health effects of exercise throughout the entire life cycle and enhance lifelong sports awareness. Therefore, this article will systematically summarize the innovative technological developments in motor neuroscience research, review the mechanisms of neural plasticity that exercise utilizes to protect the brain, and explore the role of exercise in the prevention and treatment of major neurodegenerative diseases. This aims to provide new ideas for future theoretical innovations and clinical applications in the field of exercise-induced brain protection.

Regarding the pathway and distribution of twelve channels， the current general view emphasizes their longitudinal distribution along the surface of the human body. Based on such a positioning， it is difficult to interpret the three yin and three yang "opening-closing- pivoting" theory， and the theory of the six channels transmission of externally-contracted febrile disease. Through combing the relevant contents in The Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor （《黄帝内经》）， it is proposed that， in addition to the longitudinal regional distribution of the channels on the human body， they also exhibit characteristics of layered distribution between the exterior and interior. The formation of this theory stems from the combination of body tissue and channels， that is， the taiyang governs the function of skin， yangming governs the function of flesh， and shaoyang governs the function of bone； taiyin governs the function of spleen and stomach， jueyin governs the function of liver， and shaoyin governs the function of heart. The process of integration of the channels with the body tissues has a relatively clear imprint in the syndrome differentiation of febrile disease in The Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor. The exterior-interior relationships of channels are the foundation and prerequisite for the theory of the three yin and three yang "opening-closing-pivoting" and the theory of the six channels transmission in Plain Questions·Treatise on Heat （《素问·热论篇》）.
