Purpose:
. Interfacial microleakage between dental implant and its abutment has been reported as a source of bacteria which can cause peri-implantitis and persistent inflammation, and abutment screw is on the pathway of this contamination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of nano-silver coating on the abutment screw against bacteria proliferation.
Materials and methods:
. Titanium abutment screws were coated with silver in nano particle level by sputtering method. The coated screws were examined with SEM and their surface composition were analyzed with EDS. Leakage of metal ions/particle was examined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. To evaluate antibacterial effect, abutment screws with/without coating were contaminated with P. gingivalis, S. sanguinis, T. denticola, T. forsythia for 48 hours. Then their antibacterial effect was evaluated with real-time PCR by comparing the total genomic DNA concentration and 16S rRNA derived cDNA concentration, and effect was confirmed with fluorescent staining technique which enables segregation between live and dead cells.
Results:
. The coating was in even layer with nano sized silver particles (mean particle size 28 nm in diameter) and showed 0.53 µg leakage for 24 hours per screw. The antibacterial effect of the coated group on the tested bacteria resulted in a decrease in the Viable/Total ratio of approximately 86% for P. gingivalis, 89% for S. sanguinis, 61% for T. denticola, and 97% for T. forsythia. The results were statistically significant (P < .05). The microscopic images confirmed anti-bacterial effect of the coated abutment screw.
Conclusion
. Within the limit of this study, nano-silver coating on the abutment screw may damage the viability of P. gingivalis, S. sanguinis, T. denticola, T. forsythia. Silver coating on the titanium abutment screw can be considered as an effective method to give antibacterial effect.

In cases where a palatal defect resulting from oral cancer surgery is reconstructed using a free flap, dentures placed on the grafted site, lacking bone support, may experience stability problems due to insufficient support. This case report presents a 41-year-old male patient who underwent a sinus resection due to maxillary sinus carcinoma. The defect was reconstructed using a lateral thigh free flap. After a three-month interim prosthesis phase, a conventional removable partial denture was fabricated. Considering the condition of the remaining teeth and the patient’s age, natural tooth alteration was performed and lingual undercuts of the right posterior teeth were incorporated into the design to compensate for the lack of bone support. Digital occlusal analysis devices and 3D facial scanning were utilized to evaluate changes in occlusion and facial form, and the visualized results were presented to the patient to enhance understanding.

Archaeological research has mainly focused on stone tools, pottery, and metal relics excavated from ruins. Recently, interest in natural relics such as animal bones has increased, as these relics can provide insight into the eating habits, cultural level, and perception of animals of the people at that time. This study investigated morphological structures and dimensions of Nyctereutes procyonoides bones excavated from a well at the Gasan-ri archaeological site in Jinju. These bones are presumed to be relics from the Three Kingdoms period. A total of 447 animal bones were excavated, of which 59 (13.2%) were identified as N. procyonoides bones. These identified bones weighed 47.14 g, accounting for 4.83% of the total bone weight (975.30 g). These N. procyonoides bones were found to belong to 2 individuals estimated to be 5 to 6 weeks old. These bones included 5 skull fragments, 2 mandibles, 9 vertebrae, 11 ribs, 10 forelimb bones, 3 hip bones, and 19 hindlimb bones. A fracture was observed near the bregma of one skull. The presence of a complete specimen in the well suggested that it was used in animal sacrifice rituals. This study estimated the value of animals and human dietary culture at that time by utilizing N. procyonoides bones presumed to be relics of the Three Kingdoms period.
