1.Bibliometric analysis of COVID-19-related publications in nursing by Philippine-based authors.

OBJECTIVE
To describe the trend and landscape of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)-related publications in nursing authored by at least one Philippine-based author.
METHODSThis study is a bibliometric analysis of documents retrieved from Scopus using the search terms “COVID-19” and “nurs*” in the article title, abstract, and keywords. The documents were limited to those published in English, affiliated with Philippine-based authors, and those published from 2020 to 2023. We used the ‘analyze report’ function in Scopus to analyze the data including the number of publications, types, sources, authors, and affiliations. We used VOSViewer for the co-authorship analysis of countries and co-occurrence analysis of author keywords.
RESULTSA total of 136 documents were found. Majority of these documents were classified as original articles (83%). There was a rapid increase in COVID-19 publications in nursing authored by at least one Philippine-based researcher published from 2020 to 2021 and plateaued from 2022-2023. Co-authorship analysis showed that Philippine-based authors have written documents with authors from 111 countries most notably from Saudi Arabia, the United States, Indonesia, and Australia. Most documents were published in the Belitung Nursing Journal. Authors from the University of Santo Tomas had the most publications. The most cited articles focused on psychosocial impacts, resilience, workplace stress, and online education. Author keywords commonly used in the documents were COVID-19, nursing, and nursing students, covering topics such as pandemic impacts, workplace impacts, nurse well-being, psychosocial impacts, and nursing education. Keywords have evolved through the pandemic period with a recent focus on stress and professional values.
CONCLUSIONPhilippine-based authors actively contributed in understanding the impact of COVID-19 on nurses and nursing education. Their scientific productivity was driven partly by their collaboration with foreign-based researchers. To sustain this trend in productivity and collaboration, policies, programs, and strategies are needed to promote, support, and foster research collaboration among local and international nursing researchers and institutions.

2.A Surgical Case Report of Parathyroid Lipoadenoma

Parathyroid lipoadenoma is a rare entity with very few cases reported in the literature. It is defined as a benign neoplasm resembling a hamartoma, featuring both chief cells and significant stromal elements, and may be functioning or non-functioning. Typical presenting symptoms are similar to hyperparathyroidism. Here we present a 43-year-old male with multinodular goiter, experiencing worsening dysphagia, that while undergoing total thyroidectomy, was noted to have an abnormal right inferior parathyroid gland. The patient underwent parathyroidectomy in conjunction with thyroidectomy and was incidentally found to have a parathyroid lipoadenoma. Post-operatively his parathyroid hormone decreased, and he reported no symptoms of hypocalcemia. The patient underwent successful removal of a parathyroid lipoadenoma.
3.Plant growth-promoting properties of metal-tolerant bacteria isolated from battery wastes dumpsites

Environmental pollution by heavy metals arising from several industrial processes is a major cause for concern globally as these metals disrupt the soil ecosystem and rendering metal-polluted soils unfit for use in agriculture. As such, it is essential to devise means to reclaim these soils to sustain the soil biodiversity and enhance plant growth. This study focused on the determination of plant growth-promoting features of metal-tolerant bacteria (MTB) isolated from metal-polluted soils. Composite soil samples were obtained from three different sites receiving battery wastes. Using atomic absorption spectrophotometry, concentrations of heavy metals (cadmium, nickel, lead, zinc) in the soil samples were determined. Nutrient agar augmented with 50 μg/mL salts of the metals were used to cultivate MTB. Recovered MTB were screened for metal tolerance (100-500 μg/mL). Isolates demonstrating elevated multiple metal tolerance were identified using biochemical tests and identity confirmed using 16S rRNA sequencing, followed by screening for presence of metal-resistance genes (zntA, nreB, cadA, pbrA) using PCR and selected plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits. Statistical analysis of data generated was conducted using descriptive statistics. Of all contaminants, lead was most abundant (2596.8 ± 4.48 mg/kg). A total of 132 MTB were cultivated in pure culture, with 20 (15.15%) demonstrating multi-metal tolerance belonging to the genera Serratia (1), Citrobacter (1), Bacillus (1), Staphylococcus (2), Providencia (2), Mammaliicoccus (2), Pseudomonas (4) and Alcaligenes (7). Genes (pbrA/cadA/zntA) were detected (1/5/12). Nitrogen fixation/potassium/phosphate solubilisation/IAA/siderophores production were demonstrated by 15/10/5/13/17 isolates. Isolates obtained from the different sites exhibited significant multi-metal tolerance and demonstrated significant plant growth features.

Adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) is a coronal plane deformity often accompanied by sagittal plane malalignment. Surgical correction may involve the major and/or distally-located fractional curves (FCs). Correction of the FC has been increasingly recognized as key to ameliorating radicular pain localized to the FC levels. The present study aims to summarize the literature on the rationale for FC correction in ADS. Three databases were systematically reviewed to identify all primary studies reporting the rationale for correcting the FC in ADS. Articles were included if they were English full-text studies with primary data from ADS ( ≥ 18 years old) patients. Seventy-four articles were identified, of which 12 were included after full-text review. Findings suggest FC correction with long-segment fusion terminating at L5 increases the risk of distal junctional degeneration as compared to constructs instrumenting the sacrum. Additionally, circumferential fusion offers greater FC correction, lower reoperation risk, and shorter construct length. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques may offer effective radiographic correction and improve leg pain associated with foraminal stenosis on the FC concavity, though experiences are limited. Open surgery may be necessary to achieve adequate correction of severe, highly rigid deformities. Current data support major curve correction in ASD where the FC concavity and truncal shift are concordant, suggesting that the FC contributes to the patient’s overall deformity. Circumferential fusion and the use of kickstand rods can improve correction and enhance the stability and durability of long constructs. Last, MIS techniques show promise for milder deformities but require further investigation.
5.Leadership development program for public health nurses: An evaluation of workplace application.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
Public health nurses (PHNs) are vital in the local implementation of the provisions of the Universal Healthcare (UHC) Act of 2019. However, they need adequate competencies in health systems approach to successfully implement the provisions of the law. In response to this, a leadership development course for public health nurses (LDC-PHN), anchored on the building blocks of health systems, was developed and implemented. This paper aims to describe the extent to which training participants have applied the competencies acquired from the LDC-PHN as manifested by the workplace application of their capstone projects.
METHODSFollowing Kirkpatrick’s Model of Evaluation, we used a multi-method study design to evaluate the extent of the participants’ workplace application of acquired competencies. Sources of data included the Workplace Application Plan (WAP) accomplished by each participant, a questionnaire to determine the perceived implementation status of the participants’ capstone project, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs) conducted with selected participants and their supervisors, and observation visits. Data were collected from May to December 2022. Data from the semi- structured interviews and FGDs were analyzed through content analysis, while the participants’ perceived status of their capstone project implementation was summarized as frequencies.
RESULTSMajority of the participants (61.9%) reported partial implementation of their capstone project while 16.77% reported full implementation. Capstone project implementation was facilitated by the support received from their supervisors and local chief executives. Barriers identified included the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges imposed by the events before and after the 2022 Philippine National elections. Major themes emerged from the interviews conducted among participants and their supervisors. The workplace application of the training program outcomes, based on participants’ perspectives, yielded increased capacity to lead and innovate, improved ability to advocate for capstone project implementation, transferability of acquired skill sets, and improved population outcomes. From supervisors’ perspectives, workplace application of training program outcomes include increased ability of PHNs to deliver health services, and visible enhancement of leadership and supervision skills among PHNs.
CONCLUSIONGiven ample support and opportunities, and despite the barriers and challenges they faced, LDC-PHN participants, in general, utilized and applied the competencies they gained from the course in their actual work setting. Course graduates participated in health systems strengthening at various capacities by acting upon their capstone projects that addressed UHC challenges within their particular work settings.

6.Needs assessment for the development of a leadership course for midwives: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
Midwives play a vital role in the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals related to the health and well-being of mothers and newborns. Strengthening the leadership and management capacities of midwives is pivotal to the fulfillment of their mandate beyond assisting in birth and delivery. The study explores the perspectives of midwives about professional education and practice, which are aimed to serve as bases for developing a leadership course for midwives to enhance their roles in public health.
METHODSThe study employed a descriptive-qualitative design. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, online focus group discussions (FGDs) with midwives from the academe, professional organization, and clinical practice were conducted. Through directed content analysis, the gathered information was analyzed to include the participants’ insights on midwifery competencies, teaching methods and assessment strategies, supplementary courses and training, and factors affecting midwifery practice.
RESULTSA total of eleven (11) participants contributed to the FGDs, which included midwives from the academe (dean, faculty), professional organization (board member of the Professional Regulation Commission), and clinical practice (public and private institutions). Notably, participants shared their perspectives regarding the similarities/differences in the terminal competencies of midwifery programs. The demands of outcomes-based education, coupled by the shift to online learning due to the pandemic, pushed the need for modifications in program delivery for the students. Results highlighted the need for supplementary courses and capacity building on leadership and management, research, and interprofessional collaboration. Midwives shared factors that affect their professional practice, which include insufficient training, inadequate manpower, and differences in expectations/standards in task performance.
CONCLUSIONThe findings indicate the need to develop capacity-building courses for midwives to enhance their contribution towards universal health care. The results of this study also highlight the importance of understanding and improving the competencies of midwives across the building blocks of the health system, which include health service delivery, human resources for health, health information systems, health financing, health governance, and health regulation. Notably, key concepts recommended for the Leadership Development Course for Midwives include: leadership and management, research, and interprofessional collaboration.

10.Interactive journal club: A learning method to enhance collaboration and participation among medical students.

OBJECTIVES
This quality improvement study aimed to explore the viability of a learning pedagogy for medical students, the interactive journal club (IJC), in stimulating active learning and engagement among learners. The study intends to explore the benefits provided by the IJC when compared to traditional learning methods (e.g., traditional journal clubs). It attempts to highlight the importance of didactics which focus on active learning and interactive engagement between learners.
The IJC was implemented as a course requirement in HI 201: Health Informatics, a midyear elective course at the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines Manila. A class of MD-PhD (Molecular Medicine) students was divided into two separate groups: the designated leaders who presented the article and moderated the discussion, and the audience who did not read the article beforehand yet were involved in its critical analysis. The IJC was conducted twice in two different sections of MD-PhD (Molecular Medicine) students, across two different midyear terms, Midyear Term 2021, and Midyear Term 2022. Reflection papers were collected and the responses through this requirement were collated before the primary takeaways were extrapolated. A survey was also sent out to the students of each class to itemize the consolidated feedback of students on the proposed didactic.
The overall process of IJC was deemed both exciting and stimulating. The learning pedagogy provided an alternative platform for active learning, fostering a student-centered approach that placed a heavy emphasis on critical thinking. One major challenge identified in the implementation of the educational design was the heavy reliance on student participation which was identified to, at times, be a difficult factor to overcome. In order to improve its implementation, expectations may be set at the beginning and assessed at the end of the session. In addition, a pre- and post-questionnaire may be given to assess the perceived usefulness of this new method for qualitative comparison.
Interactive and student-centered modes of learning are empirical for the improvement of literature appraisal, journal presentation, and evidence-based critical thinking among medical students. IJCs may be utilized as an alternative and effective learning strategy in teaching pertinent skills expected of a proper physician. When compared to traditional pedagogies, IJCs provide a platform for deeper learning and enable the achievement of learning outcomes, with learner engagement as the focal point. Future attempts at executing IJCs may consider the implementation of learning outcomes setting, and the use of pre- and post-IJC surveys to assess the effectiveness of the modality.
