Objective: Metabloc Syndrome has been implicated in several diseases including heart attack and stroke. At the 29th International Stroke Conference, it was emphasized that metabolic syndrome may almost double the risk of stroke and steps should be done towards its prevention. We, therefore, investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among Filipino stroke patients and compared two definitions of metabolic syndrome: the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) and the International Diabetes Federation consensus (IDF).Methodology: This is a prevalence study involving stroke patients admitted at our institution from November 2005 to November 2006 using condition-specific cut points for metabolic syndrome as defined by NCEP-ATP III and IDF consensus. Counts, frequencies and means were used. Differences inicharacteristics were tested for statistical significance using chi square test and Mann-Whitney (I test. Results: Metabolic syndrome using the IDF consensus was fulfilled by 72 (40.7 percent) patients, all of which are included in the 108 patients (61 percent) that fulfilled the NCEP-ATP III criteria. Of the 177 patients, 40.7 percent fulfilled both criteria. There was concordance between the two definitions (Cohen kappa coefficient - 0.6092; p < 0.0001)Conclusion: There is higher prevalence estimate of metabolic syndrome in Filipino stroke patients when using the NCEP-ATP III criteria compared to the IDF criteria. There is, however, good concordance between the two definitions.
