Journal of Sun Yat-sen University(Medical Sciences) 2026;47(3):387-396
ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of different doses of uncooked corn starch (UCCS), type 2 resistant starch, on intestinal mucosal barrier function in mice and to explore the potentional underlying mechanisms. MethodsTwenty C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to four groups and fed either a standard diet (control group) or diets supplemented with low (188.8 g/kg), medium (314.8 g/kg), or high (440.6 g/kg) doses of UCCS for 8 weeks. Body weight and disease activity index (DAI) were monitored. At the endpoint, colon length was measured; histopathological changes in were assessed via HE staining. The expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, E-cadherin, and Villin) in the colonic mucosa were detected using immunofluorescence. Serum inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, MIP-1α/CCL3) and fecal calprotectin levels were measured by ELISA. Gut microbiota alterations were analyzed via 16S rRNA gene sequencing and PICRUSt2 functional prediction. ResultsCompared with the control group, UCCS intervention across all doses significantly shortened colon length (P=0.000 5) and increased colonic inflammation scores (P=0.013 3). Immunofluorescence revealed a significantly reduction in the expression and co-localization of ZO-1 and Villin in the colonic mucosa (P<0.05). Systemic inflammation was evidenced by significantly elevated serum levels of IL-6 (P=0.006 4), TNF-α (P=0.000 1), IL-1β (P=0.001 4), and MIP-1α/CCL3 (P<0.000 1). Fecal calprotectin levels were also significantly increased during the early phase (weeks 1-2, P<0.05). 16S rRNA sequencing showed that UCCS significantly altered the β-diversity of the gut microbiota (P<0.05), characterized by the enrichment of butyrate-producing Clostridia_UCG-014, and the opportunistic pathogen Desulfovibrio, alongside a decreased abundance of immunomodulatory genera Akkermansia and Dubosiella. PICRUSt2 analysis suggested that UCCS modulated metabolic pathways related to energy metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and sulfur cycling. ConclusionLong-term or high-dose intake of UCCS may disrupt gut microbiota homeostasis and trigger inflammation response, thereby damaging the intestinal mucosal barrier. These findings suggest that the clinical or dietary application of UCCS should be cautioned regarding dose-dependent risks of intestinal injury.

International Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2025;48(2):190-196
The alteration of DNA content in tumor cells is called DNA ploidy. The normal DNA content is called diploid, while the abnormal DNA content is called non-diploid, which includes polyploid and aneuploid. Non-diploid status leads to survival stress in tumor cells, including genomic stress, protein toxicity stress, metabolic stress, and immune stress, and plays a dual role by both inhibiting and promoting tumor development. In this review, the survival stress of non-diploid cells and their role in tumor cells were summarized to provide a potential target for disease intervention and provide a reference for early screening, precision prevention, and personalized treatment.

Qingfeitang, specialized in resolving phlegm to stop cough and producing fluid to moisten dryness, is a classic prescription inherited and developed by physicians of successive generations and has been included in the Catalogue of Ancient Classic Prescriptions (First Batch) published by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in 2018. Relevant ancient books data and modern literature were collected by bibliometrics to analyze the historic origin, formula composition, herb origin, preparation methods, processing methods, clinical effect, and indications of Qingfeitang. The key information of Qingfeitang was summarized to provide reference for the clinical application of the decoction. In this study, a total of 43 pieces of effective data on relevant ancient literature, including 35 ancient TCM books, were collected based on a systematic collation of relevant historic and modern literature. Results showed that "Qingfeitang" was originated from the "Renshen Qingfeitang" recorded in the Taiping Holy Prescriptions for Universal Relief from the Qing dynasty. The name of "Qinfeitang" was first recorded in the Yeshi Luyanfang written by YE Dalian in the Song dynasty. We suggested the modern dosage and usage of Qingfeitang as follows: "Scutellariae Radix of 5.60 g, Platycodon grandiflora, Poria, Tangerine, Fritillaria, and Cortex Mori of 3.73 g respectively, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Asparagi Radix, Gardeniae Fructus, Armeniacae Semen Amarum, and Ophiopogonis Radix of 2.61 g respectively, Schisandra of 1 g, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma of 1.12 g, and they were taken 3 times daily. The above formula is recommended to be decocted with 400 mL of water, with 3.37 g ginger and 6 g jujubae fructus, to 320 mL, and taken after a meal, three times per day". Qingfeitang has the effect of resolving phlegm to stop cough and producing fluid to moisten dryness, specialized in treating cough, asthma, rash, and other symptoms in ancient times. Modern applications are mainly focused on the respiratory system, used for treating diseases such as bronchopneumonia and cough. The above research results provide a reference basis for the later development and research of Qingfeitang.

Objective:To explore the therapeutic strategy for laryngeal cysts in infants. Methods:A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 19 children with laryngeal cysts treated in Kunming Children's Hospital from January 2020 to January 2023. All patients were diagnosed through electronic laryngoscopy examination. Twelve neonates were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Five of them received mechanical ventilation with tracheal intubation before surgery due to severe respiratory distress, and seven received oxygen therapy with a head mask. The remaining seven children were admitted to Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, of which three cases were treated with oxygen therapy through a mask during sleep due to frequent shortness of breath during sleep. All patients underwent low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation under general anesthesia to remove the cysts. Results:Three newborns were unable to have their tracheal tubes removed due to complications with pneumonia after surgery, while the rest of the children were able to have their tubes successfully removed after complete anesthesia, and no gastric tubes were placed. All postoperative respiratory difficulties in the children disappeared, and there were no complications such as bleeding, hoarseness, or laryngeal stenosis. Five pediatric patients had incomplete relief of laryngeal ringing symptoms one month after surgery, and electronic laryngoscopy diagnosed laryngeal softening. Regular follow-up is recommended. One child relapsed 4 months after surgery and underwent a follow-up surgery six months later without recurrence. Conclusion:Endoscopic low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation is an effective surgical method for treating laryngeal cysts, with a low postoperative recurrence rate. Laryngeal cysts may be accompanied by laryngeal softening, which may be a possible reason for the postoperative symptoms not improving.

Journal of Leukemia & Lymphoma 2024;33(9):573-576
As a malignant hematological disease mainly originating from T or B lymphoid progenitor cell, acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is more prevalent in children. With the gradual revelation of the autophagy mechanism, the role of autophagy in ALL has gained increasing attention. Autophagy can not only stimulate the survival of leukemia cells as an adaptive response, but also inhibit cell proliferation in some other cases. Therefore, how to regulate autophagy in promoting death or survival and reduce the drug resistance in ALL has become a hotspot. This article reviews the role of autophagy in ALL.

Objective:To evaluate the diagnostic value of 1, 3-β-D glucan (BDG), mannan IgM antibody (Mn-IgM) and mannan IgG antibody (Mn-IgG) in invasive candidiasis and to compare the differences in the diagnostic capability of serological markers used alone or in combination. Methods:Serum samples of 126 patients with invasive candidiasis and 104 healthy people who took physical examination during the same period were collected. BDG was detected by dynamic chromogenic method, and Mn-IgM and Mn-IgG were detected by ELISA. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, Youden index, coincidence rate and Kappa value of the three serological markers used alone or in combination in the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis were analyzed and compared. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn and the areas under the curves (AUCs) were calculated. Results:The levels of BDG, Mn-IgM and Mn-IgG in patients with invasive candidiasis were significantly higher than those in healthy people ( P<0.01). The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of BDG were 48.41%, 92.31%, 0.389 and 0.842. The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of Mn-IgM were 64.29%, 91.35%, 0.540 and 0.829. The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of Mn-IgG were 27.78%, 95.19%, 0.214 and 0.737. The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of BDG+ Mn-IgM were 76.19%, 88.46%, 0.637 and 0.921. The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of BDG+ Mn-IgG were 59.52%, 91.35%, 0.491 and 0.856. The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of Mn-IgM+ Mn-IgG were 69.84%, 90.38%, 0.588 and 0.891. The sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value and AUC of BDG+ Mn-IgM+ Mn-IgG were 80.16%, 88.46%, 0.679 and 0.922. Conclusions:The sensitivity of Mn-IgM was higher than that of BDG and Mn-IgG in the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis. When the serological biomarkers were used in combination, BDG+ Mn-IgM and BDG+ Mn-IgM+ Mn-IgG had relatively high Kappa value and AUC, showing high accuracy. The clinical diagnostic value of multiple serological biomarkers used in combination was significantly higher than that of any serological biomarkers used alone. Early combined detection and continuous monitoring of multiple serological biomarkers in patients with high risk of invasive candidiasis could be used clinically to adjust antifungal treatment strategies timely.
