Objective: Suicide poses a significant public health concern with increasing prevalence in the general population, emphasizing the need for effective gatekeeper suicide prevention education. This study assesses the longitudinal effectiveness of the “Suicide CARE” gatekeeper training program within a general community sample. Suicide CARE is representative gatekeeper program in Korea. A total of 5 million individuals completed the training program of Suicide CARE in Korea to date. Methods: Participants were recruited through the Korea Suicide Prevention Association website, randomly assigned to the experimental (n=49) or control group (n=53). Pre- and post-training surveys, along with a 3-month follow-up, measured perceived knowledge, gatekeeper efficacy, preparedness, and attitudes toward suicide. Longitudinal effects were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvement in perceived knowledge, gatekeeper efficacy, perceived preparedness, and some aspects of attitude towards suicide compared to the control group, with effects declining over time but remaining statistically significant at the 3-month follow-up test. Conclusion This study is the first to evaluate the longitudinal effectiveness of Suicide CARE in a community population. Strategic integration of evidence-based gatekeeper training programs like Suicide CARE can contribute to community suicide prevention initiatives.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of psychological workplace counseling for South Korean employees. Methods: Psychological counseling sessions were conducted for 93 employees from 11 companies that signed a contract for psychological counseling services with the Workplace Mental Health Institute, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital. Each 50-minute session was tailored to the individual needs of the clients. The Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) counseling effectiveness assessment scale was administered before and after the counseling. A paired t-test was used to compare the mean scores before and after the sessions, and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, followed by a Scheffe post hoc analysis. Results: In the overall sample, the mean CORE-OM scores before and after counseling showed a significant decrease from 1.343 to 0.883, with improvements observed in all four sub-domains. ANOVA showed that the group with more than 11 sessions showed greater change in scores than the group with four sessions or fewer. The reliable change index scores showed that 38% of the employees demonstrated a reliable change, and the groups with eight or more sessions exhibited greater change than the group with fewer than eight sessions. Conclusion Among South Korean employees who received workplace counseling services, both the mean total score of the CORE-OM and the mean scores of the four sub-domains decreased after counseling. In addition, the effectiveness of counseling significantly increased as the total number of sessions increased.

Objective: The increasing concern over adolescent suicide necessitates suicide prevention training for school teachers, as students spend a significant portion of their time at school. This study’s objective is to develop a suicide prevention program tailored for teachers. Methods: The program was developed by a multidisciplinary research team, drawing on a review of both domestic and international suicide prevention programs, related scholarly articles, and Korean psychological autopsy interviews of adolescents. This was complemented by a survey of teachers to assess the program’s practicality and usability. Results: The developed program comprises three parts, consistent with other versions: Careful Observation, Active Listening, and Risk Evaluation and Expert Referral. Careful Observation focuses on training teachers to recognize verbal, behavioral, and situational warning signs of suicidal ideation in students; Active Listening involves strategies for encouraging students to express their suicidal thoughts and techniques for being an empathetic and attentive listener; Risk Evaluation and Expert Referral provides instruction on how to assess suicide risk and assist students safely. Conclusion It is anticipated that this program will equip teachers with valuable knowledge and skills, contributing to a reduction in adolescents suicide rates.
