Objective To describe the significance of the pretreatment inflammatory indicators in predicting the prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) after undergoing radical radiotherapy. Methods The data of 246 ESCC patients who underwent radical radiotherapy were retrospectively collected. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn to determine the optimal cutoff values for platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII). The Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. We conducted univariate and multivariate analyses by using the Cox proportional risk regression model. Software R (version 4.2.0) was used to create the nomogram of prognostic factors. Results The results of the ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal cutoff values of PLR, NLR, and SII were 146.06, 2.67, and 493.97, respectively. The overall response rates were 77.6% and 64.5% in the low and high NLR groups, respectively (P<0.05). The results of the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that the prognosis of patients in the low PLR, NLR, and SII group was better than that of patients in the high PLR, NLR, and SII group (all P<0.05). The results of the multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that gender, treatment modalities, T stage, and NLR were independent factors affecting the overall survival (OS). In addition, T stage and NLR were independent factors affecting the progression-free survival (PFS) (all P<0.05). The nomogram models of OS and PFS prediction were established based on multivariate analysis. The C-index values were 0.703 and 0.668. The calibration curves showed excellent consistency between the predicted and observed OS and PFS. Conclusion The pretreatment values of PLR, NLR, and SII are correlated with the prognosis of patients with ESCC who underwent radical radiotherapy. Moreover, NLR is an independent factor affecting the OS and PFS of ESCC patients. The NLR-based nomogram model has a good predictive ability.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Traditional Medical Formulae 2025;31(6):283-291
Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a common gynecological disease during pregnancy, clinically characterized by repeated spontaneous abortions, yet its pathological mechanism remains incompletely understood. Traditional Chinese medicine attributes the pathogenesis of RSA to the deficiency of Chong Ren and the lack of fetal solidity. It has amassed experience in treating RSA, with Shoutaiwan being widely utilized for addressing miscarriage symptoms such as habitual abortion due to kidney deficiency, bleeding during pregnancy, and fetal movement. In recent years, there has been a gradual increase in experimental studies on the application of Shoutaiwan in treating RSA and on related experiments. These studies have demonstrated that Shoutaiwan preserves the fetus mainly by modulating hormone balance, alleviating immune inflammation, and enhancing blood coagulation equilibrium during pregnancy. Besides, through the modulation of key signaling pathways such as nuclear factor, erythroid 2 like 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and Janus kinase 1 (JAK1)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT), as well as mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), Shoutaiwan has improved cellular antioxidant capacity, adjusted the phenotype of trophoblast and metaphase cells, and inhibited immune rejection, thus improving the pregnancy success rate. These findings not only elucidate the diverse biological foundations underlying Shoutaiwan's efficacy in treating RSA but also offer a scientific rationale for its clinical application and further mechanism research. Nonetheless, there remains a dearth of systematic reviews on RSA treatment with Shoutaiwan. Therefore, this review summarizes and synthesizes existing research findings to systematically analyze existing literature and studies, delving deeply into the principal pharmacological effects and associated signaling pathways of Shoutaiwan in regulating RSA. It aims to establish crucial reference points for its clinical application in RSA treatment and future experiments and research.

Objective:
To evaluate the intervention effectiveness of co-occurrence and prevention for myopia and obesity among primary and secondary school students, so as to provide a scientific basis for the development of comprehensive intervention measures in myopia and obesity.
Methods:
From September 2022 to September 2023, a cluster random sampling method was used to select 6 primary schools and 6 junior high schools from Tongzhou District, Beijing. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (914 before intervention and 754 after intervention) and a control group (868 before intervention and 652 after intervention), with an expected duration of one academic year. Based on the RE-AIM framework, integrate resources from families, schools, communities, and medical institutions to develop a school-based intervention technology packagefor the co-occurrence and prevention of myopia and obesity in children. The intervention group received intervention according to the comprehensive intervention technology package, while the control group did not receive any intervention measures. Relevant health indicators during the baseline period and after intervention were measured and collected, and groups were compared by Chi quest test, t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test.
Results:
After intervention, the uncorrected visual acuity of primary and secondary school students in the intervention group (4.79±0.30) and the control group (4.77±0.33) both decreased compared to those before intervention (4.80±0.30, 4.90±0.32) ( t =-7.00,-5.24); the decrease in uncorrected visual acuity in the intervention group was smaller than that in the control group( t =5.33)( P <0.01). After intervention, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, and body fat percentage of primary and secondary school students in the intervention group decreased compared to those before intervention. However, the changes in these indicators were not statistically significant ( t/Z =-0.03, - 0.36,- 0.30,- 0.01, P >0.05); the above indicators in the control group increased compared to those before intervention, but only hip circumference and body fat percentage showed statistically significant changes ( t/Z =2.17, 2.62, P <0.05). After intervention, both the intervention group and the control group showed increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to those before intervention(intervention group: t =2.16,5.29; control group: t =6.84,5.07); the intervention group had lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure than the control group( t = -5.27 , -2.08)( P <0.05). After intervention, the intervention and the control groups had statistically significant differences in cognitive accuracy(92.48%, 69.33%) in terms of "outdoor exercise can prevent myopia" and "having 5 servings of adult fist sized vegetables and fruits every day" ( χ 2=6.30, 7.86, P <0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the proportion of primary and secondary school students in the intervention group (40.98%) and the control group (35.43%) for "who did not drink sugary drinks for every day in the past 7 days" ( χ 2=4.32, P <0.05). After intervention, the intervention group and the control group showed increases in "school outdoor activity duration on school days" and "outdoor activity duration on rest days" compared to those before intervention ( t/Z =-13.32,-9.71;- 2.59,-2.69);the behavior rate of "visual acuity measurement frequency at least once every 3 months" in the intervention group (46.68%) and the control group (52.76%) increased compared to those before intervention (36.43%, 44.01%), and the increases in the intervention group were greater than that in the control group ( χ 2=17.52,11.08) ( P <0.05).
Conclusions
Comprehensive intervention measures have significant intervention effects on controlling the occurrence and development of comorbidity of myopia and obesity in children. It could actively promote collaboration and cooperation among families, schools, communities and medical institutions to reduce the occurrence of myopia and obesity among primary and secondary school students.

Attempts have been made to modulate motor sequence learning (MSL) through repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, targeting different sites within the sensorimotor network. However, the target with the optimum modulatory effect on neural plasticity associated with MSL remains unclarified. This study was therefore designed to compare the role of the left primary motor cortex and the left supplementary motor area proper (SMAp) in modulating MSL across different complexity levels and for both hands, as well as the associated neuroplasticity by applying intermittent theta burst stimulation together with the electroencephalogram and concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation. Our data demonstrated the role of SMAp stimulation in modulating neural communication to support MSL, which is achieved by facilitating regional activation and orchestrating neural coupling across distributed brain regions, particularly in interhemispheric connections. These findings may have important clinical implications, particularly for motor rehabilitation in populations such as post-stroke patients.

Cancer Research and Clinic 2024;36(1):1-5
Objective:To investigate the relationship between preoperative plasma fibrin degradation products (FDP) level and clinicopathological features of patients with completely resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods:A retrospective case series study was performed. The clinical data of 521 patients who were pathologically diagnosed with NSCLC in Beijing Friendship Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University from January 2016 to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Among 521 cases, 406 cases were postoperatively pathologically confirmed as non-lymph node and non-distant metastasis (non-metastasis group) and 115 cases were postoperatively pathologically confirmed as lymph node or distant metastasis (metastasis group). The preoperative FDP level and clinicopathological characteristics as well as the clinicopathological characteristics of NSCLC patients with different FDP levels were compared between the two groups. The correlation between preoperative FDP level and TNM staging was analyzed by using Spearman correlation analysis. Results:Among 521 NSCLC patients, 266 cases were female, 255 cases were male; the age [ M( Q1, Q3)] was 59 years (54 years, 65 years); 441 cases were adenocarcinoma and 70 cases were squamous cell carcinoma. The preoperative median FDP level was 2.78 mg/L (2.35 mg/L, 3.13 mg/L) and 2.99 mg/L (2.56 mg/L, 4.16 mg/L), respectively of NSCLC patients in non-metastasis group and metastasis group, and the difference was statistically significant ( Z = 6.13, P < 0.001). The preoperative FDP level was 2.56 mg/L (2.35 mg/L, 3.20 mg/L) and 2.99 mg/L (2.56 mg/L, 3.20 mg/L), respectively in the early-stage NSCLC (stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ) and advanced NSCLC (stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ) patients, and the difference was statistically significant ( Z = 8.42, P < 0.001). Spearman correlation analysis showed that preoperative FDP level was positively correlated with tumor diameter ( r = 0.287, P < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between preoperative FDP level and the number of metastatic lymph nodes in 115 patients with lymph node metastasis ( r = 0.679, P < 0.001). According to the preoperative median FDP (2.78 mg/L), all patients were divided into FDP ≤2.78 mg/L group and FDP >2.78 mg/L, and there were statistically significant differences in age, metastasis, tumor staging, tumor diameter, the metastatic number of lymph node and histological types of NSCLC patients in both groups (all P < 0.05). Conclusions:The increase of preoperative plasma FDP level may be related to the tumor metastasis and clinical stage of NSCLC patients
