Pterocypsela is a very important traditional Chinese medicine from the tribe Cichorieae of Asteraceae. Mitotic chromosome numbers and karyotypes are reported for P. formosana and P. elata from Hunan and Hubei province, China. The former is new and the latter provide confirmation of previous reference. All P. taxa are diploidy with 2n = 18 and their basic number is tentatively suggested as x = 9. Karyotype of Pterocypsela is 2A and P. formosana with a karyotype formula of 2n = 2x = 18 = 4m + 14sm, and 2n = 2x = 18 = 2m + 8sm +8st for P. elata. It is the first time to report the AI value for Pterocypsela in this paper. Cytological data of chromosomal numbers and karyotypes were used to discuss the close relationships of the Pterocypsela genus and the taxonomy of the medicinal plants.

OBJECTIVETo establish the theories and methods to determine apparent solubility paraneters of multiple components for the Chinese materia medica (CMM) with HPLC fingerprint.
METHODThe mathematical functional expresses to determine the apparent solubility parameters for multiple constituents were established according to total quantum geometrical average retention time (TQGART) for HPLC fingerprint that characterized the entirety tendencies for all-over chromatographic peaks, validated by the aloe-emodin's solubility parameters which had been determined. The HPLC for the aloe-emodin's solubility parameters were carried out with an Alltech Apollo C18 as column, Acetone: Water as mobile phase, gradient elution, flow rate as 1.0 mL x min(-1), the detection wave-length as 430 nm and the temperature as 30 degrees C.
RESULTThe mathematical functional model between the TQGART of HPLC chromatographic fingerprint and the total quantum apparent solubility parameters was established and used to determine the aloe-emodin's mixture solubility parameter as 36.12 J(1/2) x cm(-3/2), nearly equal to 35.57, 36.07 J(1/2) x cm(-3/2) calculated by ration of peak area ratios and molecular fraction, respectively.
CONCLUSIONThe TQGART of HPLC fingerprint can be used to determine simultaneously the apparent or single intrinsic solubility parameters for total quantum or intrinsic solubility parameters for single in multiple constitute systems, by which theoretical and technologic platform to study the compatibility rule and dosage form reform of the single CMM will be established.

Chinese Medical Sciences Journal 2002;17(3):160-163
OBJECTIVETo study the value of serum insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) levels in differential diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (GHD).
METHODSTo measure serum IGFBP-3 levels by RIA in normal children and adolescents, GHD children and short-stature children without GHD.
RESULTSSerum level of IGFBP-3 in 129 children with untreated GHD and with no pubertal development was 1.6 +/- 0.9 mg/L, which was less than that in normal group of the same age, but overlapped with the normal children in Tanner stage I. After six-month treatment with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), serum level of IGFBP-3 in 59 GHD significantly increased from 1.3 +/- 0.7 mg/L to 2.7 +/- 0.9 mg/L, accompanied by an increase of body heights, growth velocities and serum level of IGF-1. Serum level of IGFBP-3 in 55 short-stature children without GHD was 3.3 +/- 2.2 mg/L, which was not significantly different from that in normal group.
CONCLUSIONSerum IGFBP-3 level can reflect the status of GH secretion in children with GHD and is a useful marker for differential diagnosis of GHD.
