1.A brief examination of the historical roots and origins of the evolution of Chinese medical ethics culture
Chinese Medical Ethics 2026;39(1):22-28
Contemporary Chinese medical ethics culture is a brand-new cultural field gradually formed with the development of Chinese society and the progress of medical science and technology. This type of culture, with its own characteristics, needs to be examined and understood from the perspective of the historical roots and origins of its evolution. The ancient Chinese medical ethics thought has a foundational significance for modern and contemporary medical ethics thought. The thought that “medicine is the art of benevolence” is the core concept of Chinese medical ethics culture, from which the ancient medical moral thoughts and cultural systems were derived. With the introduction of Western medicine and its development in China, the penetration of modern Western medical ethics thought into the moral thought system of traditional Chinese medicine became the beginning of the collision and integration of Chinese and Western medical ethics wisdom. The “spirit of red medicine” formed during the revolutionary process in modern China, reflects the characteristics of medical ethics culture forged in the practice of China’s great revolution. Contemporary Chinese medical ethics culture is gradually blending into the mainstream of Chinese society and has become a constituent element of the socialist culture system with Chinese characteristics.
2.A protocol for Chinese expert consensus on blood pressure assessment and multidisciplinary management of Takayasu arteritis (revised in 2025)
Chinese Journal of Clinical Medicine 2026;33(4):749-752
Takayasu arteritis-related hypertension is common but easily overlooked. This disease often leads to serious cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications, and is one of the main causes of death. In order to comprehensively improve the early identification, standardized diagnosis and treatment, and long-term management of hypertension in patients with Takayasu arteritis in China, the revision of the “Chinese multidisciplinary recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of Takayasu arteritis-related hypertension (TARH)” (2021) was initiated by Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, in collaboration with the Rheumatology Branch of Chinese Women’s Medical Association, Rheumatism Committee of Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, and Rheumatology Branch of Shanghai Medical Association. This proposal mainly introduces the purpose, target audience, development methods, working group members and responsibilities, proposal and collection of clinical issues, evidence retrieval and screening, formation of recommended opinions, as well as the process and methods of consensus formation, external review, publication, dissemination and implementation.

Objective:To explore patterns of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) use among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Jiangsu Province, China from 2019 to 2023.Methods:Using data from the IBD health data platform of the National Healthcare Big Data (Eastern) Center, a retrospective cohort study was conducted. We performed descriptive analyses on hospitalised patients diagnosed with IBD between 2019 and 2023, who received TCM treatment. Results:The study included 11 095 case records from 4 760 patients, with TCM diagnoses primarily indicating diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Ulcerative colitis (UC) accounted for 4 782 hospitalizations (3 103 patients), while Crohn's disease (CD) accounted for 6 313 hospitalizations (1 657 patients). Patient demographics showed a trend towards younger age and a higher proportion of males. Treatment utilisation was highest in southern Jiangsu compared with the central and northern regions. In terms of disease burden, all treatment costs showed a downward trend. In terms of external TCM therapies, UC patients tend to prefer plasters and enemas, while CD patients are more inclined to use acupuncture. Regarding herbal medicine, licorice, white atractylodes, and white peony root are commonly used single herbs for IBD patients. Conclusions:The number of IBD patients treated with TCM in Jiangsu Province has steadily increased from 2019 to 2023. It is important to identify effective TCM treatment methods to reduce the burden of patients.

This article reports the clinical and genetic characteristics of a female patient with X-linked sideroblastic anemia with ataxia (XLSA/A). The 36-year-old patient had an insidious onset with progressive worsening, primarily presenting with ataxia, dysarthria, and cognitive decline. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head revealed mild atrophy of the brainstem and cerebellum. Whole-genome sequencing identified a heterozygous c.871G>A (p.G291S) variant in the ABCB7 gene, inherited from the patient′s mother. X-chromosome inactivation analysis showed a skewed ratio of 82% (with predominant inactivation of the paternal X chromosome). This study is the first to report a case of XLSA/A in a female caused by a heterozygous ABCB7 gene c.871G>A variant, indicating that skewed X-chromosome inactivation can lead to clinical manifestations in female carriers, expanding the understanding of the pathogenesis of XLSA/A.

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is an inherited disease caused by a deficiency of the enzyme arylsulfatase A (ARSA). Lentivirus-modified autologous hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy (HSCGT) has recently been approved for clinical use in pre and early symptomatic children with MLD to increase ARSA activity. Unfortunately, this advanced therapy is not available for most patients with MLD who have progressed to more advanced symptomatic stages at diagnosis. Patients with late-onset juvenile MLD typically present with a slower neurological progression of symptoms and represent a significant burden to the economy and healthcare system, whereas those with early onset infantile MLD die within a few years of symptom onset. We conducted a pilot study to determine the safety and benefit of HSCGT in patients with postsymptomatic juvenile MLD and report preliminary results. The safety profile of HSCGT was favorable in this long-term follow-up over 9 years. The most common adverse events (AEs) within 2 months of HSCGT were related to busulfan conditioning, and all AEs resolved. No HSCGT-related AEs and no evidence of distorted hematopoietic differentiation during long-term follow-up for up to 9.6 years. Importantly, to date, patients have maintained remarkably improved ARSA activity with a stable disease state, including increased Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score and decreased magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesion score. This long-term follow-up pilot study suggests that HSCGT is safe and provides clinical benefit to patients with postsymptomatic juvenile MLD.
