Chinese Journal of School Health 2025;46(9):1232-1236
Objective:
To explore the association between mental health and muscle strength among Chinese adolescents aged 13- 18, providing a theoretical foundation and intervention strategies for mental health promotion.
Methods:
Data were obtained from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students Constitution and Health, including 98 631 Chinese adolescents aged 13- 18. Psychological distress was assessed by using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), and mental well being was measured with the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well being Scale (WEMWBS). Based on the gender and age specific Z scores of various test items [grip strength, standing long jump, pull ups (for males), and sit ups (for females)], muscle strength index (MSI) was constructed to evaluate the comprehensive level of muscle strength in adolescents. According to the Dual factor Model (DFM) of mental health, participants were categorized into four groups:troubled, symptomatic but content, vulnerable, and complete mental health. Gender differences were analyzed by using Chi-square tests, trends were tested with Cochran-Armitage tests, and multinomial Logistic regression models were applied to assess associations between muscle strength and mental health among adolescents.
Results:
In 2019, 37.4% of Chinese adolescents aged 13-18 were reported of high mental distress, and 59.9% were reported of low mental well being. Boys had significantly lower rates of high mental distress (35.3%) and low mental well being (55.6%) compared to girls (39.4%, 64.3%), and the differences were of statistical significance ( χ 2=176.13, 780.42, both P <0.05). In 2019, the rate of complete mental health among adolescents showed a downward trend with increasing age ( χ 2 trend = 258.47) and a gradual upward trend with increasing muscle strength levels ( χ 2 trend =123.14),and both boys and girls exhibited similar trends ( χ 2 trend =103.83, 168.46; 57.00 , 67.34) (all P <0.05). The results of the unordered multiclass Logistic regression model showed that after controlling for confounding factors such as age and gender, when the completely pathological group as a reference, for every 1 unit increase in MSI in adolescents, the likelihood of being in a completely mental health state increased by 29% ( OR = 1.29); for every unit increase in the Z-score for pull ups, the likelihood of being in a completely mental health state increased by 6% ( OR =1.06) among boys; for every 1 unit increase in sit up Z score, the likelihood of being in a completely mental health state increased by 19% ( OR =1.19) among girls (all P <0.05).
Conclusions
The mental health status of Chinese adolescents is not good enough. Muscle strength is positively associated with mental health.

3.Prevalence of comorbidity of spinal curvature abnormality and malnutrition among primary and middle school students in Tianjin in 2023
Chinese Journal of School Health 2024;45(8):1171-1175
Objective:
To analyze the prevalence of comorbidity of spinal curvature abnormality and malnutrition among primary and secondary school students aged 10-18 years in Tianjin in 2023, so as to provide scientific basis for the combined prevention of common diseases and multiple diseases among students and the construction of school health system.
Methods:
In September to October 2023, 31 884 primary and secondary school students aged 10 to 18 years in Tianjin were selected using stratified cluster random sampling. Abnormal spinal curvature in children and adolescents was assessed by Sereening of Spinal Curvature Abnormality of Children and Adolescents, while stunting, wasting, overweight, and obesity were determined according to the Screening for Malnutrition among Schoolage Children and Adolescents and Screening for Overweight and Obesity among Schoolage Children and Adolescents. The χ2 test was used to compare betweengroup differences in coprevalence, and multiple Logistic regression models were used to analyze the risk of different comorbidity types in different clusters.
Results:
The coprevalence of spinal curvature abnormality and malnutrition among primary and secondary school students in Tianjin was 1.6%, which was higher for girls than boys (1.8%, 1.4%), higher (2.5%) for senior high schools than for junior high schools and elementary schools (2.0%, 0.5%), and higher in rural than in urban areas (2.1%, 1.1%) (χ2=9.45, 141.92, 46.94, P<0.05). Multiple Logistic regression models showed that junior high school girls had a higher risk of incorrect posture comorbid with stunting and wasting (OR=4.52, 95%CI=1.84-11.06) and incorrect posture comorbid with overweight and obesity (OR=2.67, 95%CI=1.74-4.10) than boys, and that scoliosis/sagittal spinal abnormality comorbid with stunting and wasting (OR=0.10, 95%CI=0.02-0.44) risk was lower than that of boys, senior high school girls had a lower risk of scoliosis/sagittal spinal abnormality comorbid with overweight and obesity (OR=0.27, 95%CI=0.11-0.66) (P<0.05).
Conclusions
The coprevalence of spinal curvature abnormality and malnutrition is specific among primary and secondary school students in Tianjin, and the comorbidity type varies by gender and education stage. There is a need to increase prevention and control of spinal curvature abnormalities in school health working, intensive screening of key populations, and timely intervention.

PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway plays a crucial role in cell proliferation, survival, differentiation, motility and intracellular transport. PI3Kδ, an isoform of PI3K, is highly expressed in B lymphocytes and is involved in the malignant progression of B-cell lymphoma. Thus, PI3Kδ has emerged as an attractive target for the development of anti-B-cell lymphoma drugs. Currently, there are several PI3Kδ inhibitors approved by the FDA for the treatment of B-cell lymphoma, each with its own characteristics, but also with varying degrees of adverse effects in clinical practice. Due to the complexity and diversity of the pathogenesis of B-cell lymphoma, single-target PI3Kδ inhibitors often have limited efficacy and are prone to drug resistance, and need to be combined with chemotherapy or other targeted drugs to enhance their efficacy. The future trend is to design novel inhibitors with higher efficacy and lower toxicity or to develop novel combination regimens with other chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and target drugs to acquire better anti-tumor effects with reduced adverse effects. This review summarizes the PI3Kδ inhibitors that have been approved for the treatment of B-cell lymphoma or are still in clinical trials, mainly focusing on their characteristics, adverse effects and combination regimens.

Objective To explore the plasma-activated medium(PAM)produced by low temperature plasma(LTP)on the proliferation and angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)so as to provide theoretical basis for the future use of PAM to promote wound healing and inhibit tumor angiogenesis. Methods HUVECs were selected as the in vitro research model. The PAM-containing medium after LTP treatment for different time points(0 s,15 s,30 s,45 s,60 s,and 75 s)was used for intervention. The influence of PAM on HUVECs viability was assessed using the MTT assay and cell cycle analysis. The effects of PAM on angiogenesis were examined through angiogenesis experiments.Intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS)were measured using fluorescence probes.A melanoma mouse model was established, and CD31 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results As the treatment time increased, the intracellular levels of ROS also elevated.PAM derived from LTP exhibited a bidirectional effect on angiogenesis in HUVECs.Compared to the control group(0 s),low-dose treatments(15 s and 30 s)enhanced HUVECs viability, while high-dose treatments(45 s,60 s,and 75 s)significantly decreased cell viability(P<0.05).The proportion of HUVECs in the S phase was significantly increased in the PAM-15 s and PAM-30 s groups, but markedly decreased in the PAM-45 s,PAM-60 s,and PAM-75 s groups, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).The HUVECs tube formation ability was enhanced in the 15 s and 30 s PAM groups, but diminished in the PAM-45 s,PAM-60 s,and PAM-75 s groups, characterized by the decreased numbers of vascular nodes, intersections, meshes, and branching points(P<0.05).After PAM treatment in the melanoma mouse model, the control group exhibited widespread distribution of CD31 in tumor tissue, while the PAM-5 min and PAM-10 min groups displayed reduced distribution of CD31.Conclusion Short-term exposure to PAM enhances HUVECs proliferation and angiogenesis, whereas prolonged exposure suppresses cell viability and inhibits angiogenesis.

Objective:To evaluate the effect of combining contralateral high-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with biofeedback-controlled empty swallowing training on dysphagia among stroke survivors. Methods:Eighty dysphagic stroke survivors were divided at random into a control group, a biofeedback group, an rTMS group and a combined treatment group, each of 20. In addition to routine dysphagia rehabilitation, the biofeedback group and the rTMS group received empty swallowing training based on biofeedback or high-frequency rTMS applied to the healthy motor cortex as appropriate. The combined treatment group was given both. The treatment was administered once daily, 5 days a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Before and after the treatment, all of the subjects′ swallowing was evaluated using the penetration aspiration scale (PAS), functional oral intake scale (FOIS) and a standardized swallowing assessment (SSA). The latency and amplitude of the mylohyoid muscle′s motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were also recorded before and after the treatment. Results:After the treatment, significant improvement was observed in the average PAS, FOIS and SSA scores as well as in the latency and amplitude of the MEPs in the four groups. The average results in the combined treatment group were significantly better than in the other 3 groups. The latency of the mylohyoid muscle′s MEP was significantly shorter in the combined group than in the control and biofeedback groups on average, while the amplitude was significantly greater than in the control group. Conclusion:Combining contralateral high frequency rTMS with empty swallowing training based on biofeedback can better improve the swallowing of dysphagic stroke survivors.

Objective To observe the changes to,and possible mechanism of,intestinal permeability in pigs without direct injury after an abdominal-and intestinal-penetrating injury from firearms in cold environment at high altitudes. Methods Fifty-five experimental pigs were divided into two groups:high-altitude cold group(HC)and low-altitude normal temperature group(LN).According to the observation time, each group was divided into five experimental subgroups:0h,2h,4 h,8h,and 24 h.There were six pigs in each HC subgroup and five pigs in each LN subgroup. After euthanasia, intestinal tissues were taken, and the levels of the inflammatory factors TNF-α,and IL-6 in intestinal homogenate and the concentrations of intestinal permeability-related proteins DAO and D-lactate acid in blood were detected by ELISA method. The intestinal tissues of experimental pigs were taken at 0 h and 8 h for LN and 8 h for HC,and intestinal pathological changes were observed and scored after HE staining. The concentrations of Occludin,ZO-1,Claudin-3,TLR4,NF-κB,and MLCK(proteins related to intestinal permeability)were detected by Western blot to explore the effect of a cold environment at high altitude on secondary intestinal permeability changes after injury and the possible mechanisms. Results Both the HC group and LN group experienced typical abdominal intestinal penetrating injuries, and there were no significant differences in their abdominal infection scores or intestinal adhesion(P>0.05).The levels of DAO and D-LA in the serum of experimental pigs in the HC and LN groups gradually increased over time. The levels of DAO and D-LA in the HC group were significantly higher than those in the LN group at all time points(P<0.01 or P<0.001).The fastest increase in DAO and D-LA in the HC group was 4 h to 8 h,while in the LN group,it was 8 h to 24 h.The pathological score of intestinal tissue in the HC group was significantly higher than that in the LN group of experimental pigs(P<0.01).The inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 both increased over time in the intestinal tissue of LN and HC groups. The most significant time point for a increase of inflammatory factors in the HC group was 4 h to 8 h,while in the LN group,it was 8 h to 24 h.The intestinal tissue IL-6 and TNF-α levels of experimental pigs in the HC group were higher than those in the LN group the entire time(P<0.05,P<0.01,or P<0.001).The levels of occludin and ZO-1 in the HC group at 8 h decreased significantly compared to those of the LN group at the 8 h time point(P<0.05),while claudin-3 showed a significant decrease in LN(P<0.001).In the HC group,TLR4,NF-κB,and MLCK were both higher than those in the LN group at 8 h,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions A high-altitude cold environment can lead to a secondary increase in intestinal permeability after abdominal-penetrating firearm injury, and its mechanism may be related to the TLR4/NF-κB/MLCK pathway.

The utilization of optimal orthodontic force is crucial to prevent undesirable side effects and ensure efficient tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, the sensitivity of existing detection techniques is not sufficient, and the criteria for evaluating optimal force have not been yet established. Here,by employing 3D finite element analysis methodology,we found that the apical distal region(A-D region)of mesial roots is particularly sensitive to orthodontic force in rats.Tartrate-resistant acidic phosphatase(TRAP)-positive osteoclasts began accumulating in the A-D region under the force of 40 grams(g),leading to alveolar bone resorption and tooth movement. When the force reached 80 g,TRAP-positive osteoclasts started appearing on the root surface in the A-D region.Additionally,micro-computed tomography revealed a significant root resorption at 80 g.Notably, the A-D region was identified as a major contributor to whole root resorption. It was determined that 40 g is the minimum effective force for tooth movement with minimal side effects according to the analysis of tooth movement, inclination, and hyalinization. These findings suggest that the A-D region with its changes on the root surface is an important consideration and sensitive indicator when evaluating orthodontic forces for a rat model.Collectively, our investigations into this region would aid in offering valuable implications for preventing and minimizing root resorption during patients'orthodontic treatment.
