Background: and Purpose We aimed to determine the proportion of Korean patients with early Alzheimer’s disease (AD) who are eligible to receive lecanemab based on the United States Appropriate Use Recommendations (US AUR), and also identify the barriers to this treatment. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 6,132 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment or mild amnestic dementia at 13 hospitals from June 2023 to May 2024. Among them, 2,058 patients underwent amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) and 1,199 (58.3%) of these patients were amyloid-positive on PET. We excluded 732 patients who did not undergo brain magnetic resonance imaging between June 2023 and May 2024. Finally, 467 patients were included in the present study. Results: When applying the criteria of the US AUR, approximately 50% of patients with early AD were eligible to receive lecanemab treatment. Among the 467 included patients, 36.8% did not meet the inclusion criterion of a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of ≥22. Conclusions Eligibility for lecanemab treatment was not restricted to Korean patients with early AD except for those with an MMSE score of ≥22. The MMSE criteria should therefore be reconsidered in areas with a higher proportion of older people, who tend to have lower levels of education.

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of a nursing leadership program on self-leadership, interpersonal relationships, clinical performance, problem-solving abilities, and nursing professionalism among nursing students in South Korea. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted. The Practice-Driven Nursing Leadership Program for Students (PDNLP-S) was developed based on the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). This quasi-experimental study design included 60 nursing students. The experimental group (n=30) participated in the PDNLP-S for 120-minute sessions over 5 weeks, while the control group (n=30) received usual lectures. The PDNLP-S included lectures, discussions, and individual and group activities to cultivate core nursing leadership competencies such as individual growth, collaboration, nursing excellence, creative problem-solving, and influence. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney U-test, and the independent t-test with IBM SPSS Windows ver. 26.0. Results: The experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in self-leadership (t=3.28, p=.001), interpersonal relationships (t=3.07, p=.002), clinical performance (U=268.50, p=.004), and problem-solving abilities (t=2.20, p=.017) compared to the control group. No significant difference was observed in nursing professionalism (t=0.50, p=.311). Conclusion This study demonstrates that the PDNLP-S improved nursing students’ self-leadership, interpersonal relationships, clinical performance, and problem-solving abilities. The PDNLP-S can play a significant role in cultivating future nurse leaders by enhancing these nursing leadership competencies among nursing students.

Background: In Korea, the patterns of prevalence of gynecological cancers have shifted due to rising obesity-related cancer cases. We evaluated the associations of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with the risk of gynecological malignancy in Korean women. Methods: Using National Health Insurance Service cohort data, we analyzed 365,581 participants among the 1,999,980 women aged ≥ 19 years who underwent health check-ups at the baseline year 2009–2010, excluding those who died, those with prior cancer diagnoses, underwent hysterectomy and/or salpingo-oophorectomy before the index date (January 1st, 2011), or missing/outliers BMI and WC values. Follow-up extended to December 31st, 2021, evaluating the incidences of endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancer. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each gynecological malignancy according to BMI and WC were calculated using Cox proportional hazard regression. Results: Among the 365,581 participants, 898, 1,268, and 873 cases of endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancer occurred, respectively. HRs (95% CIs) for endometrial cancer were 1.37 (1.15–1.63), 1.63 (1.38–1.94), and 3.64 (2.81–4.70) for BMIs of 23.0–24.9, 25.0–29.9, and ≥ 30 kg/m2 compared to BMI of 18.5–22.9 kg/m2 (P for trend < 0.001). HRs (95% CIs) for ovarian cancer were 1.16 (1.00–1.33), 1.19 (1.03–1.37), and 1.49 (1.12–1.98) for BMIs of 23.0–24.9, 25.0–29.9, and ≥ 30 kg/m2 compared to BMI of 18.5–22.9 kg/m2 (P for trend = 0.002). No significant association was found between BMI and the risk for cervical cancer (P for trend = 0.266). HRs (95% CIs) for endometrial cancer were 1.35 (1.09–1.66), 1.41 (1.14–1.74), and 1.90 (1.55–2.34) for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartiles of WCs compared to the 1st quartile (P for trend <0.001). Ovarian cancer tended to increase and cervical cancer tended to decrease as WC increased (P for trend = 0.035 for ovarian cancer, P for trend = 0.034 for cervical cancer). Conclusion In Korean women, the risks of endometrial and ovarian cancers increased significantly from the pre-obese level as BMI and WC increased, while cervical cancer risk tended to increase as WC decreased. Management of obesity should be reinforced for the prevention of obesity-related gynecological cancers, considering the increasing incidence of these cancers among Korean women.

This review provides a comprehensive framework for the diagnostic approach and management of Huntington’s disease (HD) tailored to the Korean population. Key topics include genetic counseling, predictive testing, and reproductive options like preimplantation genetic testing. Strategies for assessing disease progression in premanifest HD through laboratory investigations, biofluid, and imaging biomarkers are highlighted. Special considerations for juvenile and late-onset HD, along with associated comorbidities like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular abnormalities, are discussed. The guide emphasizes personalized symptom management, including pharmacotherapy, physical therapy, and nutritional support, while exploring emerging disease-modifying treatments. A multidisciplinary care model is advocated to improve outcomes for HD patients and caregivers in Korea.

Objective: We conducted this study to assess the efficacy and safety of taltirelin hydrate (TH) in patients with ataxia due to spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD). Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to either the taltirelin group (5 mg orally, twice daily) or the control group. The primary endpoint was the change in the Korean version of the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (K-SARA) score at 24 weeks. The secondary endpoints included changes in the K-SARA score at 4 and 12 weeks as well as the Clinical Global Impression Scale, the five-level version of the EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire, the Tinetti balance test, and gait analysis at 4, 12, and 24 weeks. Results: A total of 149 patients (hereditary:nonhereditary=86:63) were enrolled. There were significant differences in the change in the K-SARA score at 24 weeks from baseline between the taltirelin group and the control group (-0.51±2.79 versus 0.36±2.62, respectively; p=0.0321). For the K-SARA items, the taltirelin group had significantly lower “Stance” and “Speech disturbance” subscores than the control group (-0.04±0.89 versus 0.23±0.79 and -0.07±0.74 versus 0.18±0.67; p=0.0270 and 0.0130, respectively). However, there were no significant differences in changes in other secondary efficacy outcome measures at 24 weeks from baseline between the two treatment arms (p>0.05). Conclusion Clinicians might consider the use of TH in the treatment of patients with ataxia due to SCD.

Purpose: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) play a significant role in modern diets but are associated with various health risks, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.This study examined the consumption patterns of UPFs among middle-aged adults, older adults, and the oldest older adults in South Korea to identify the key food sources contributing to UPF intake using the Korean NOVA classification system. Methods: Data from the 2016–2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed for 13,396 participants aged 40 years and older. Individuals with extreme energy intakes, serious diseases, or incomplete dietary records were excluded. The UPF intake levels were categorized into quartiles (Q1–Q4) based on the proportion of energy derived from UPFs, excluding individuals who did not consume UPFs. Results: In all age groups, the group with a high proportion of UPF consumption tended to have higher energy and macronutrient intake but lower micronutrient intake. The UPFs contributing significantly to energy intake were primarily alcohol and grain-based products.On the other hand, the energy contribution from UPFs based on legumes, milk, and dairy products tended to increase as the level of UPF consumption increased, and this trend was more significant with increasing age. Conclusion This study identified the differences in UPF consumption patterns across age groups and highlighted the importance of selective consumption based on the types of UPFs.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutation testing is crucial for the administration of tyrosine kinase inhibitors to treat non–small cell lung cancer. In addition to traditional tissue-based tests, liquid biopsies using plasma are increasingly utilized, particularly for detecting T790M mutations. This study compared tissue- and plasma-based EGFR testing methods. Methods: A total of 248 patients were tested for EGFR mutations using tissue and plasma samples from 2018 to 2023 at Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital. Tissue tests were performed using PANAmutyper, and plasma tests were performed using the Cobas EGFR Mutation Test v2. Results: All 248 patients underwent tissue-based EGFR testing, and 245 (98.8%) showed positive results. Of the 408 plasma tests, 237 (58.1%) were positive. For the T790M mutation, tissue biopsies were performed 87 times in 69 patients, and 30 positive cases (38.6%) were detected. Plasma testing for the T790M mutation was conducted 333 times in 207 patients, yielding 62 positive results (18.6%). Of these, 57 (27.5%) were confirmed to have the mutation via plasma testing. Combined tissue and plasma tests for the T790M mutation were positive in nine patients (13.4%), while 17 (25.4%) were positive in tissue only and 12 (17.9%) in plasma only. This mutation was not detected in 28 patients (43.3%). Conclusions Although the tissue- and plasma-based tests showed a sensitivity of 37.3% and 32.8%, respectively, combined testing increased the detection rate to 56.7%. Thus, neither test demonstrated superiority, rather, they were complementary.

Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) of the spleen is extremely rare in pediatric patients. Here, we report the case of an 8-year-old boy with iron-deficiency anemia and a solitary splenic mass detected using US, CT, and MRI. The patient underwent partial splenectomy, and the final diagnosis was SANT. Herein, we discuss the radiological features of splenic SANT through a review of reported cases and the differential diagnosis of other primary splenic tumors.
