Reference management software (RMS) represents a cornerstone of modern academic writing and publishing. For decades, programs such as EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley have played central roles in facilitating citation organization, bibliography formatting, and collaborative scholarship. Although each platform has introduced unique innovations, persistent limitations remain, particularly with respect to usability, accessibility, and accuracy. In parallel, the rise of generative artificial intelligence has introduced an unprecedented challenge: the inadvertent inclusion of fabricated or incorrect references mistakenly incorporated into manuscripts. This phenomenon has exposed a critical limitation of traditional RMS platforms, namely their inability to verify reference authenticity. Against this backdrop, new solutions have emerged. One such example is CiteWell (https://citewell.org/), an artificial intelligence (AI)-era RMS that introduces several notable innovations, including PubMed-integrated verification, an intuitive interface for new users, customizable journal-specific styles, and multilingual accessibility. This review provides a comprehensive historical overview of RMS, evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of major platforms, and positions emerging AI-based tools as a new paradigm that combines traditional reference management with essential safeguards for contemporary academic challenges.
2.Role Conflict of Physician Assistant Nurses in Korea: A Scoping Review

Purpose:
This study aimed to examine research trends and synthesize key findings on role conflict among physician assistant nurses in Korea through a scoping review.
Methods:
Following Arksey and O'Malley's five-step framework, literature published from January 2000 to December 2024 was searched across four Korean databases: Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), Data Base Periodical Information Academic (DBpia), Korean studies Information Service System (KISS) and ScienceON. To include gray literature, additional searches were performed using Google Scholar and manual refernce checking. After removing duplicates and screening, 15 studies were included. Data were organized using a Microsoft Excel-based framework.
Results:
Among the 15 studies, 13 were quantitative studies, one was a concept analysis, and one was a grounded theory study. The studies reported that physician assistant nurses experienced moderate levels of role conflict, with scores ranging from 3.18 to 3.88 out of 5. Role conflict was significantly associated with job satisfaction, turnover intention, job stress, and burnout.
Conclusion
Role conflict was found to negatively impact the professionalism and job performance of physician assistant nurses and ultimately affects the quality of healthcare services. Institutional strategies, such as clarifying job roles and legally defining scopes of practice, are necessary to reduce role conflict and enhance professional identity.

Background:
Current international guidelines recommend against deep sedation as it is associated with worse outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, in Korea the prevalence of deep sedation and its impact on patients in the ICU are not well known.
Methods:
From April 2020 to July 2021, a multicenter, prospective, longitudinal, noninterventional cohort study was performed in 20 Korean ICUs. Sedation depth extent was divided into light and deep using a mean Richmond Agitation–Sedation Scale value within the first 48 hours. Propensity score matching was used to balance covariables; the outcomes were compared between the two groups.
Results:
Overall, 631 patients (418 [66.2%] and 213 [33.8%] in the deep and light sedation groups, respectively) were included. Mortality rates were 14.1% and 8.4% in the deep and light sedation groups (P = 0.039), respectively. Kaplan-Meier estimates showed that time to extubation (P < 0.001), ICU length of stay (P = 0.005), and death P = 0.041) differed between the groups. After adjusting for confounders, early deep sedation was only associated with delayed time to extubation (hazard ratio [HR], 0.66; 95% confidence inter val [CI], 0.55– 0.80; P < 0.001). In the matched cohort, deep sedation remained significantly associated with delayed time to extubation (HR, 0.68; 95% 0.56–0.83; P < 0.001) but was not associated with ICU length of stay (HR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.79–1.13; P = 0.500) and in-hospital mortality (HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.65–2.17; P = 0.582).
Conclusion
In many Korean ICUs, early deep sedation was highly prevalent in mechanically ventilated patients and was associated with delayed extubation, but not prolonged ICU stay or in-hospital death.
4.Blood Concentrations of Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury Are Associated With Alcohol-Related Liver Disease

Background:
An association between environmental pollutants and alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) has not been determined until now. The objectives of this study were to examine the association of the pollutants with ALD, and whether the pollutants together increased the risk of ALD.
Methods:
Data were extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010–2013 and 2016–2017; n = 11,993). Blood levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury were measured. ALD was defined by a combination of excessive alcohol consumption and ALDon-alcoholic fatty liver disease index > 0. The aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index and fibrosis (FIB)-4 score were used to evaluate ALD FIB.
Results:
The odds ratios (ORs) of ALD for the highest versus the lowest quartiles of exposure were for lead, 7.39 (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.51–9.91); cadmium, 1.68 (95% CI, 1.32–2.14); and mercury, 5.03 (95% CI, 3.88–6.53). Adjusting for age, gender, smoking, occupation, education, and personal income attenuated the associations but indicated significant positive trends (all P trend < 0.001). A positive additive interaction between cadmium and lead was observed. The relative excess OR due to the interaction was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.41–1.51); synergy index = 2.92 (95% CI, 0.97–8.80). Among 951 subjects with ALD, advanced FIB was associated with lead and cadmium (OR, 3.46, 95% CI, 1.84–6.53; OR, 8.50, 95% CI, 2.54–28.42, respectively), but not with mercury. The effect estimates for lead and cadmium remained significant even after adjustment for daily alcohol intake.
Conclusion
Blood levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury were significantly associated not only with the risk of ALD but also with ALD FIB. Cadmium and lead have synergistic effects that increase the risk of ALD.
5.Lactobacillus attenuates progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by lowering cholesterol and steatosis

Background/Aims:
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely related to gut-microbiome. There is a paucity of research on which strains of gut microbiota affect the progression of NAFLD. This study explored the NAFLD-associated microbiome in humans and the role of Lactobacillus in the progression of NAFLD in mice.
Methods:
The gut microbiome was analyzed via next-generation sequencing in healthy people (n=37) and NAFLD patients with elevated liver enzymes (n=57). Six-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were separated into six groups (n=10 per group; normal, Western, and four Western diet + strains [109 colony-forming units/g for 8 weeks; L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, L. paracasei, and L. plantarum]). Liver/body weight ratio, liver pathology, serum analysis, and metagenomics in the mice were examined.
Results:
Compared to healthy subjects (1.6±4.3), NAFLD patients showed an elevated Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio (25.0±29.0) and a reduced composition of Akkermansia and L. murinus (P<0.05). In the animal experiment, L. acidophilus group was associated with a significant reduction in liver/body weight ratio (5.5±0.4) compared to the Western group (6.2±0.6) (P<0.05). L. acidophilus (41.0±8.6), L. fermentum (44.3±12.6), and L. plantarum (39.0±7.6) groups showed decreased cholesterol levels compared to the Western group (85.7±8.6) (P<0.05). In comparison of steatosis, L. acidophilus (1.9±0.6), L. plantarum (2.4±0.7), and L. paracasei (2.0±0.9) groups showed significant improvement of steatosis compared to the Western group (2.6±0.5) (P<0.05).
Conclusions
Ingestion of Lactobacillus, such as L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, and L. plantarum, ameliorates the progression of nonalcoholic steatosis by lowering cholesterol. The use of Lactobacillus can be considered as a useful strategy for the treatment of NAFLD.

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of neuronal disorders including brain ischemic injury. Thioredoxin 1 (Trx1), a 12 kDa oxidoreductase, has anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic functions in various cells. It has been highly implicated in brain ischemic injury. However, the protective mechanism of Trx1 against hippocampal neuronal cell death is not identified yet. Using a cell permeable Tat-Trx1 protein, protective mechanism of Trx1 against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death was examined using HT-22 cells and an ischemic animal model. Transduced Tat-Trx1 markedly inhibited intracellular ROS levels, DNA fragmentation, and cell death in H 2O 2-treatment HT-22 cells. Tat-Trx1 also significantly inhibited phosphorylation of ASK1 and MAPKs in signaling pathways of HT-22 cells. In addition, Tat-Trx1 regulated expression levels of Akt, NF-κB, and apoptosis related proteins. In an ischemia animal model, Tat-Trx1 markedly protected hippocampal neuronal cell death and reduced astrocytes and microglia activation. These findings indicate that transduced Tat-Trx1 might be a potential therapeutic agent for treating ischemic injury.

8.Current status of education for disaster medicine in Korean medical schools

Objective:
Doctors or public health doctors at the nearest institution to a disaster scene often have to treat the casualties at the scene. Therefore, disaster medical education is necessary for medical students and doctors, but such education is not properly implemented. This study investigated the status of disaster medical education in Korean medical schools and the professors' thoughts on the appropriateness and necessity of disaster medical education.
Methods:
A survey was conducted on working-level professors in charge of student education in emergency medicine in 40 medical schools. The survey asked the professors the current status of disaster medical education at each school and the professors' thoughts on the appropriateness and necessity of disaster medical education.
Results:
Thirty-seven professors (92.5%) responded to the survey. Twenty-seven schools (73.0%) had a regular curriculum of disaster medicine. Disaster drills were conducted at 34 training hospitals (91.9%), while students of 10 schools (29.4%) were officially participating in the drill. Of the responders, 31 (83.8%) responded that disaster medicine is necessary for clinicians. Thirty-seven professors (100%) thought disaster medical education was necessary for medical students, and 20 (54.1%) of them responded that their schools did not provide adequate disaster medical education.
Conclusion
Many schools did not have a proper course on disaster medical education. Disaster medical education is necessary for medical students, but such education is not properly implemented.

10.Current Barriers of Obesity Management of Children Using Community Child Care Centers and Potential Possibility of Utilizing Mobile Phones: A Qualitative Study for Children and Caregivers

Objectives:
This study was performed to identify the current barriers of obesity management for children using Community Child Care Centers and their caregivers (parents and teachers working in the Centers). Further, this study explored the possibility of utilizing a mobile phone application for tailored obesity prevention and management programs to overcome the current difficulties associated with children's obesity management.
Methods:
The qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with 20 obese and overweight children or children who wanted to participate in this study using Community Child Care Centers, 12 teachers working at the Centers, and a focus group interview with five parents of children using the Centers. Data were analyzed with a thematic approach categorizing themes and sub-themes based on the transcripts.
Results:
The current barriers of obesity management of obese and overweight children using Community Child Care Centers were lack of self-directed motivation regarding obesity management (chronic obesity-induced lifestyles and reduced self-confidence due to stigma) and lack of support from households and Community Child Care Centers (latchkey child, inconsistency in dietary guidance between the Center and household, repetitive pressure to eat, and absence of regular nutrition education). Mobile phone applications may have potential to overcome the current barriers by providing handy and interesting obesity management based on visual media (real-time tracking of lifestyles using behavior records and social support using gamification), environmental support (supplementation of parental care and network-based education between the Community Child Care Center and household), and individualized intervention (encouragement of tailored and gradual changes in eating habits and tailored goal setting). It is predicted that the real-time mobile phone program will provide information for improving nutritional knowledge and behavioral skills as well as lead to sustainable children’s coping strategies regarding obesity management. In addition, it is expected that environmental factors may be improved by network-based education between the Community Child Care Centers and households using the characteristics of mobile phones, which are free from space and time constraints.
Conclusions
The tailored education program for children using Community Child Care Centers based on mobile phones may prevent and reduce childhood obesity by overcoming the current barriers of obesity management for children, providing environmental and individualized support to promote healthy lifestyles and quality of life in the future.
