Purpose: Adjuvant treatment for craniopharyngioma after surgery is controversial. Adjuvant external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) can increase the risk of long-term sequelae. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is used to reduce treatment-related toxicity.In this study, we compared the treatment outcomes and toxicities of adjuvant therapies for craniopharyngioma. Materials and Methods: We analyzed patients who underwent craniopharyngioma tumor removal between 2000 and 2017. Of the 153 patients, 27 and 20 received adjuvant fractionated EBRT and SRS, respectively. One patient in the adjuvant fractionated EBRT group died owing to glioma 94 months after receiving radiotherapy (10-year PFS: 80%). The 10-year PFS was 43.6% and 50.7% in the SRS and surveillance groups, respectively. The treatment outcomes significantly differed according to adjuvant treatment in nongross total resection (GTR) patients. Additional treatment-related toxicity was comparable in the adjuvant fractionated EBRT and other groups. Conclusion Adjuvant fractionated EBRT could be effective in controlling local failure, especially in patients with non-GTR, while maintaining acceptable treatment-related toxicity.

Background: and Purpose: Empathy comprises cognitive and emotional components.However, the impairments in empathy among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (DAT) are not well understood, particularly in the context of depression, which may exacerbate these deficits. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of neurodegeneration and depression on empathetic abilities. Methods: The study included 31 healthy elderly (HE) individuals, 30 patients with amnestic multi-domain MCI (amMCI), and 30 patients with DAT. Empathy was assessed using the Korean-Multifaceted Empathy Test (K-MET), and the Interpersonal Response Index (IRI).Participants were classified as depressed or non-depressed using the Geriatric Depression Scale. A two-way MANOVA was conducted to examine differences in empathy based on group and depressive status. Results: A significant interaction between group and depressive status was found for both cognitive and emotional empathy on the K-MET, but not on the IRI. In the depressed group, cognitive empathy scores were lower in the order of HE, amMCI, and DAT. Similarly, in the non-depressed group, the HE group performed better than both amMCI and DAT, with no significant difference between the latter two. Regarding emotional empathy, the depressed HE group scored higher than both amMCI and DAT, with no significant difference between these groups. In the non-depressed group, emotional empathy declined in the order of HE, amMCI, and DAT. Conclusions These findings indicate that both neurodegeneration and depression significantly impair empathetic abilities, with declines in cognitive and emotional empathy evident at the MCI stage, regardless of depressive status.

This study assessed parental knowledge and utilization patterns of fluoride containing dentifrices in the context of youth oral health promotion. A direct questionnaire was administered to 168 parents of young patients who attended the Pediatric Dental Clinic at Yonsei University Dental Hospital between March and May 2024. The findings indicated that while a significant majority (94.6%) of parents acknowledged the importance of fluoride in adult oral care products, their understanding of the potential adverse effects was limited. The study found that 84.5% of children used fluoride toothpaste and 96.4% of parents considered fluoride toothpaste essential for their children. However, a considerable proportion (40.5%) used low-fluoride formulations and many parents lacked awareness of the fluoride concentration (42.3%) and the appropriate dosage for their children (61.3%). Notably, paternal parents had a higher likelihood of being uninformed about fluoride content (24.7%, p = 0.003) and the correct quantity of toothpaste (26.2%, p < 0.05) that children should use. These observations underscore the need for targeted education for fluoride-containing oral care products for parents. Precise guidelines on suitable fluoride toothpaste types and quantities tailored to the developmental stages in children are important for enhancing oral health outcomes in youth.
