BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) consumption has been increasing globally, including Korea, but detailed data on the intake levels and consumers’ characteristics are limited. This study examined sociodemographic, lifestyles, and dietary characteristics among ASBs consumers in Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Three hundred and twenty adults (≥ 18 yrs) who reported consuming ASBs in the 2021–2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were selected. Based on the 24-h dietary recall data, ASBs were classified using food codes and names, and further categorized according to the product name. The daily ASBs consumption (g/day) was calculated for each participant, and the participants were divided into 2 groups based on the median value (372.8 g/day). The general characteristics, lifestyles, and dietary characteristics were compared between the 2 consumption groups. RESULTS: The average daily ASBs consumption was 432.5 g (SD = 283.2) for men and 361.4 g (SD = 265.4) for women. ASBs consumption was 424.6 g (SD = 259.5) for individuals aged 18– 29 yrs, 400.2 g (SD = 320.0) for those aged 30–39 yrs, and 360.5 g (SD = 249.3) for those aged ≥ 40 yrs. ASBs consumption was higher among overweight/obese individuals (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 23 kg/m2 ) (427.2 g, SD = 296.3) compared to non-overweight/obese individuals (361.0 g, SD = 241.8). The group with higher ASBs consumption was younger (P < 0.001), had a higher proportion of men (P = 0.013), and had a higher BMI (P = 0.007). The higher consumption group had a greater proportion of individuals attempting to lose or maintain weight (P = 0.016), higher energy intake (P = 0.032), lower frequency of fruits consumption (P = 0.005), and a higher frequency of dinner consumption (P = 0.034). CONCLUSION These findings may serve as baseline data for future research and programs related to ASBs consumption.

Objective: We investigated the distribution of AI viruses in fecal samples from wild bird habitats (and nearby poultry-farm areas) surveyed between September and March from 2019 to 2025 and identified associated epidemiological risk factors. Methods: Samples were screened for influenza A (M, H5, H7) genes using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), subjected to virus isolation in embryonated chicken eggs, and subtyped by PCR and sequencing. Host species were identified through DNA barcoding. Relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals were estimated for province, month, and waterfowl density. Results: Overall prevalence of HPAI and low pathogenic AI (LPAI) virus was 0.10% and 3.21%, respectively. HPAI virus was continuously isolated since 2020–2021, except 2019– 2020, while LPAI prevalence steadily increased (3.01%–4.35%). Twelve hemagglutinin (H1–H12) subtypes were identified in 1,722 isolates, and H3 (16.5%) was the most prevalent, followed by H5 (11.1%) and H7 (5.2%). LPAI H5N3 (55.7%) and H7N7 (75.5%) were the predominant H5 and H7 subtypes, respectively. Detection was higher in western coastal provinces, and higher mallard/spot-billed duck density and sampling in September– December were associated with increased risk. Conclusions and Relevance: Continued surveillance of migratory-bird habitats can provide early warning of HPAIV incursions and support targeted biosecurity measures in high-risk regions and seasons.

Background: Various implants are used to treat intertrochanteric fractures. However, the optimal implant to stabilize intertrochanteric femoral fractures is still a matter of debate. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the midterm outcomes of patients treated using compression hip nails (CHNs). Methods: Between March 2013 and April 2018, 164 patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures who were treated with internal fixation using CHNs were enrolled in this study. The mean age of the patients was 79.6 years. We retrospectively collected and estimated information such as reduction state, implant position, operation time, blood loss, hospital stay, time to achieve union, clinical scores (Harris hip score [HHS] and EuroQol five-dimensional [EQ-5D]), intraoperative complications (such as lag jamming and drill bit breakage), failure of fixation, avascular necrosis, and surgical site infection. Results: The mean follow-up period was 39.69 months. Eight percent of the patients required an open reduction. The mean operation time was 131 minutes, the mean blood loss was 221.19 mL, the mean hospital stay was 20.66 days, and the average time to union was 18 weeks. Intraoperative complications included 8 cases of breakage of the drill bit while making distal holes. The failure rate was 3.7% and revision surgery was performed in 6 cases (for cut-out in 5 and pull-out of the lag screw in 1). Asymptomatic venous thromboembolism occurred in 2 cases and hematoma requiring intervention occurred in 1 case. There were no other complications such as avascular necrosis, infection, and lateral irritation. At the 2-year follow-up, the averages of HHS and EQ-5D were 71.54 and 0.68, respectively. Conclusions Among the implants used to treat intertrochanteric femoral fractures, CHNs had a surgical failure of 3.7% and showed good radiologic and clinical results.

The hepatitis A virus (HAV) induces severe acute liver injury and is adapted to human and monkey cell lines but not other cells. In this study, the HAV was inoculated into porcine kidney (PK-15) cells to determine its infectivity in porcine cells. The growth pattern of the HAV in PK-15 cells was compared with its growth pattern in fetal rhesus kidney (FRhK-4) cells. The growth of HAV was less efficient in PK-15 cells. In conclusion, HAV replication was verified in PK-15 cells for the first time. Further investigations will be needed to identify the HAV-restrictive mechanisms in PK-15 cells.

Various sphingolipids exist, such as the ceramides, ceramide-1-phosphate, sphingosine, sphinganine, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), sphingomyelin, and hundreds of glycosphingolipids. Among these, ceramides, glycosphingolipids, and S1P play important roles in the atherogenic processes. The atherosclerotic plaque consists of higher amounts of ceramide, glycosphingolipids, and sphingomyelin. The inhibition of the de novo ceramide biosynthesis reduces the development of atherosclerosis. S1P regulates atherogenesis via binding to the S1P receptor (S1PR). Among the five S1PRs (S1PR1-5), S1PR1 and S1PR3 mainly exert anti-atherosclerotic properties. This review mainly focuses on the effects of ceramide and S1P via the S1PR in the development of atherosclerosis. Moreover, it discusses the recent findings and potential therapeutic implications in atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: High-NaCl diet is a contributing factor for cardiac hypertrophy. The role of HSP22 as a protective protein during cardiac hypertrophy due to hypernatremia is unclear. Accordingly, this study aimed to establish a cellular hypernatremic H9C2 model and to compare the expression of HSP22 in Ca2+ homeostasis between a high-NaCl and angiotensin II-induced hypertrophic cellular H9C2 model. METHODS: Real-time PCR was performed to compare the mRNA expression. Flow cytometry and confocal microscopy were used to analyze the cells. RESULTS: The addition of 30 mM NaCl for 48 h was the most effective condition for the induction of hypertrophic H9C2 cells (termed the in vitro hypernatremic model). Cardiac cellular hypertrophy was induced with 30 mM NaCl and 1 µM angiotensin II for 48 h, without causing abnormal morphological changes or cytotoxicity of the culture conditions. HSP22 contains a similar domain to that found in the consensus sequences of the late embryogenesis abundant protein group 3 from Artemia. The expression of HSP22 gradually decreased in the in vitro hypernatremic model. In contrast to the in vitro hypernatremic model, HSP22 increased after exposure to angiotensin II for 48 h. Intracellular Ca2+ decreased in the angiotensin II model and further decreased in the in vitro hypernatremic model. Impaired intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis was more evident in the in vitro hypernatremic model. CONCLUSION: The results showed that NaCl significantly decreased HSP22. Decreased HSP22, due to the hypernatremic condition, affected the Ca2+ homeostasis in the H9C2 cells. Therefore, hypernatremia induces cellular hypertrophy via impaired Ca2+ homeostasis. The additional mechanisms of HSP22 need to be explored further.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between body mass index (BMI) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, international prostate symptom score (IPSS), quality of life (QoL), and prostate volume (PV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Height, weight, PSA levels, PV, and IPSS were analyzed in 15,435 patients who underwent a prostate examination between 2001 and 2014. Patients aged <50 years or with a PSA level ≥10 ng/mL were excluded. The relationships between BMI and PSA, IPSS, QoL, and PV were analyzed by a scatter plot, one-way analysis of variance, and the Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The mean age was 71.95±7.63 years, the mean BMI was 23.59±3.08 kg/m2, the mean PSA level was 1.45±1.45 ng/mL, the mean IPSS was 15.53±8.31, the mean QoL score was 3.48±1.25, and the mean PV was 29.72±14.02 mL. PSA, IPSS, and QoL showed a tendency to decrease with increasing BMI, and there were statistically significant differences for each parameter (p≤0.001). PV showed a significant tendency to increase with BMI (p < 0.001). In the correlation analysis, BMI showed a statistically significant correlation (p < 0.001) with PSA, IPSS, and QoL, although the correlations were very weak. In contrast, BMI showed a significant correlation with PV (p < 0.001), with a meaningful Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.124. CONCLUSIONS: Higher BMI was associated with lower PSA levels and higher IPSS and QoL scores. Meanwhile, PV increased with BMI. Although obese individuals had a greater PV, obesity did not aggravate lower urinary tract symptoms.

The volume of hip arthroplasty is stiffly increasing because of excellent clinical outcomes, however it has not been shown to decrease the incidence of transfusions due to bleeding related to this surgery. This is an important consideration since there are concerns about the side effects and social costs of transfusions. First, anemia should be assessed at least 30 days before elective hip arthroplasty, and if the subject is diagnosed as having anemia, an additional examination of the cause of the anemia should be carried and steps taken to address the anemia. Available iron treatments for anemia take 7 to 10 days to facilitate erythropoiesis, and preoperative iron supplementation, either oral or intravenous, is recommended. When using oral supplements for iron storage, administer elemental iron 100 mg daily for 2 to 6 weeks before surgery, and calculate the dose using intravenous supplement. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic derivative of the lysine component, which reduces blood loss by inhibiting fibrinolysis and clot degradation. TXA is known to be an effective agent for reducing postoperative bleeding and reducing the need for transfusions in primary and revision total hip arthroplasties. Patient blood management has improved the clinical outcome after hip arthroplasty through the introduction and research of various agents, thereby reducing the need for allogeneic blood transfusions and reducing the risk of transfusion-related infections and the duration of hospitalizations.
