Influenza causes substantial, yet preventable, morbidity and mortality and poses a particularly high risk to patients with cancer, in whom both the disease itself and systemic anticancer therapies can lead to immunosuppression. This review summarizes key updates in influenza prevention and management in these patients. Considering the apparent disappearance of the B/Yamagata lineage globally, influenza vaccines have transitioned from quadrivalent to trivalent formulations, while high-dose, adjuvanted, and cell culture-based vaccines have been developed to improve responses in older and immunocompromised hosts. Although patients with cancer demonstrate reduced vaccine immunogenicity, evidence shows that vaccination significantly decreases influenza-related complications, thereby justifying strong recommendations for routine vaccination. In diagnostics, real-time polymerase chain reaction and multiplex respiratory virus panels have replaced low-sensitivity rapid antigen tests, enabling earlier and more reliable diagnosis and timely antiviral use. Neuraminidase inhibitors remain the first-line therapy, with baloxavir marboxil, a cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitor, serving as a single-dose oral alternative. However, atypical presentations, prolonged viral shedding, and antiviral resistance can occur in this group. Therefore, combining optimized vaccination, proactive molecular testing, and prompt, individualized antiviral therapy is essential to reduce influenza-associated morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing anticancer treatment.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has underscored the limitations of traditional diagnostic methods, particularly in ensuring the safety of healthcare workers and patients during infectious outbreaks. Smartphone-based digital stethoscopes enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged as potential tools for addressing these challenges by enabling remote, efficient, and accessible auscultation. Despite advancements, most existing systems depend on additional hardware and external processing, increasing costs and complicating deployment. This review examines the feasibility and limitations of smartphone-based digital stethoscopes powered by AI, focusing on their ability to perform real-time analyses of audible and inaudible sound frequencies. We also explore the regulatory barriers, data storage challenges, and diagnostic accuracy issues that must be addressed to facilitate broader adoption. The implementation of these devices in veterinary medicine is discussed as a practical step toward refining their applications. With targeted improvements and careful consideration of existing limitations, smartphone-based AI stethoscopes could enhance diagnostic capabilities in human and animal healthcare settings.

Long coronavirus disease (COVID) is a condition in which coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptoms persist for over 3 months, and currently poses a global public health challenge. Due to varying manifestations and lack of standardized definitions, diagnostic methods, and treatments, comprehensive clinical guidelines are required. This review article, summarizing research and expert consensus up to June 2023, provides recommendations for diagnosis and long-term management of long COVID symptoms. It emphasizes thorough patient evaluation, including medical history, physical examinations, and tests, and advocates vaccination and antiviral treatments to reduce risk. Guidelines for long COVID will be updated as new knowledge emerges.

South Korea’s current vaccination policies leave a surveillance gap for non-National Immunization Program (NIP) vaccines. In this study, we proposed a sentinel surveillance approach for monitoring the safety of non-NIP vaccines. Vaccination data were collected retrospectively among patients hospitalized with pre-defined adverse events of special interest (AESI) by reviewing electronic medical records in five university hospitals. This approach incorporates expert assessment to determine the causal relationship. We confirmed that 16 patients had received non-NIP vaccines among 860 patients diagnosed with AESI.We concluded one case of preeclampsia was possibly related to tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis vaccination. We propose a multi-hospital-based, retrospective assessment system for predefined AESIs as an alternative to active vaccine safety monitoring method. These efforts are expected to enhance both the accuracy and timeliness of safety monitoring in South Korea.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections impose a significant burden on antibiotic usage, healthcare expenditures, and morbidity. Therefore, it is crucial to revise policies to minimize such losses. This nationwide survey aimed to evaluate infection prevention and control (IPC) components in healthcare facilities and encourage improvements in acute care hospitals with inadequate infection prevention settings. This study aims to enhance the infection control capabilities of healthcare facilities. Methods: From December 27, 2021, to May 13, 2022, we conducted a survey of 1,767 acute care hospitals in the Republic of Korea. A survey was conducted to evaluate the infection control components in 1,767 acute care hospitals. Infection control officers provided direct responses to a systematically developed questionnaire. Subsequently, 10% of the respondents were randomly selected for the site investigation. Results: Overall, 1,197 (67.7%) hospitals responded to the online survey. On-site investigations were conducted at 125 hospitals. Hospitals with ≥ 150 beds are advised to have an IPC team under Article 3 of the Medical Service Act; however, only 87.0% (598/687) of hospitals with ≥ 100 beds had one. Conversely, 22.7% (116/510) of hospitals with < 100 beds had an IPC team. Regulations for hand hygiene, waste management, healthcare worker protection and safety, environmental cleaning, standard precautions, and prevention of the transmission of multidrug-resistant pathogens were present in 84.2%, 80.1%, 77.4%, 76.2%, 75.8%, and 63.5% of the hospitals, respectively. Hospitals with < 100 beds had low availability of all categories of standard operating procedures. Conclusion This study is the first national survey of acute care hospitals in the Republic of Korea. The data presented in the current study will improve the understanding of IPC status and will help establish a survey system. Our survey provides a basis for improving policies related to IPC in healthcare facilities.

The growth of minimally invasive techniques in spine surgery has accelerated in recent years, leading to development of new techniques and technology such as robotic-assisted spine surgery and full-endoscopic surgery. While robotic spine surgery offers the potential of increased precision and accuracy in instrumentation, endoscopic techniques are beneficial in reducing collateral tissue damage and allowing patients a faster return to function. We describe a case where we combine a robotic guidance system with a full-endoscopic technique, the trans-superior articular process decompression. We aim to share our experience as well as an overview of the surgical technique.
