Bioactive compounds derived from herbal medicinal plants modulate various therapeutic targets and signaling pathways associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the world's primary cause of death. Ginkgo biloba, a well-known traditional Chinese medicine with notable cardiovascular actions, has been used as a cardio- and cerebrovascular therapeutic drug and nutraceutical in Asian countries for centuries. Preclinical studies have shown that ginkgolide B, a bioactive component in Ginkgo biloba, can ameliorate atherosclerosis in cultured vascular cells and disease models. Of clinical relevance, several clinical trials are ongoing or being completed to examine the efficacy and safety of ginkgolide B-related drug preparations in the prevention of cerebrovascular diseases, such as ischemia stroke. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the pharmacological activities, pharmacokinetic characteristics, and mechanisms of action of ginkgolide B in atherosclerosis prevention and therapy. We highlight new molecular targets of ginkgolide B, including nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidases (NADPH oxidase), lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor-1 (LOX-1), sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), platelet-activating factor (PAF), proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and others. Finally, we provide an overview and discussion of the therapeutic potential of ginkgolide B and highlight the future perspective of developing ginkgolide B as an effective therapeutic agent for treating atherosclerosis.
2.Whole-transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of calcified outer-layer tissue from cystic echinococcosis

Echinococcosis is a common zoonotic disease in livestock; the type with the highest incidence is cystic
echinococcosis (CE). In clinical management, patients with CE of the liver in which the cyst wall is calcified
have been found to have better prognoses than those without calcification. In this study, we collected
calcified and uncalcified cyst wall tissue from patients with hepatic CE and observed significant changes
in the expression of 2336 messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs), 178 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs),
210 microRNAs (miRNAs), and 33 circular RNAs (circRNAs) using high-throughput sequencing (HTS).
Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses of
differentially expressed RNAs (DERNAs: DEmRNAs, DElncRNAs, DEmiRNAs, and DEcircRNAs) were
performed to explore these RNAs’ potential biological functions and signaling pathways. Ultimately,
the results of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine
triphosphate (dUTP) nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining confirmed the correlation between calcification
and apoptosis of the cyst wall. In summary, this study was an initial exploration of the molecular-biological
mechanism underlying spontaneous calcification of the hydatid cyst wall, and it provides a theoretical
basis for exploring new targets for drug treatment in CE.
4.Educational perspectives in cardiothoracic anesthesia in the United States using a survey of educators and learners

Cardiothoracic anesthesiology training presents learners with unique challenges, procedural skills, and the management of high-intensity critical scenarios. An effective relationship between educator and learner can serve as the backbone for effective learning, which is crucial for the development of budding anesthesiologists. Strengthening this educational alliance between teachers and trainees involves understanding the educational values educators and learners find most important to their learning experiences. This study aimed to identify the key educational values related to cardiothoracic anesthesia for both learners and educators. By identifying these values in separate cohorts (learners and educators), the importance of various educational values can be examined and compared between the trainees and teachers.
Methods:
Two separate surveys (one for learners and one for teachers) were adapted from the Pratt and Collins Teaching Perspectives Inventory to establish the importance of various educational values related to cardiothoracic anesthesia. Surveys were sent to 165 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited anesthesiology residency training programs in the United States to trainees (residents and cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows) and educators (board-certified cardiothoracic anesthesiologists).
Results:
Analysis of survey results from 19 educators and 57 learners revealed no statistical differences across the two groups, except Q15: “Let trainee perform critical technical steps” (P value = 0.02).
Conclusions
While learners and educators in cardiothoracic anesthesia hold similar values regarding cardiac anesthesia education, they differ in the degree to which critical technical steps should be performed by learners.
5.Determination of Optimal Treatment Plan for Papillary Tumor of the Pineal Region: Case Series With Literature Review

Background:
Papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) is a rare neuroepithelial tumor with CentralNervous System (CNS) World Health Organization (WHO) grade II or III classification. Due to its rarity, there is no clear census on treatment. The purpose of this study is to identify the optimal treatment plan focused on extending overall survival (OS).
Methods:
This is an institutional case series with review of the literature. Fifty-three publicationswere analyzed. Only cases with histological diagnosis of PTPR were included. Data collected included demographics, treatment modalities, disease progression, and OS.
Results:
The analysis included 105 patients from the literature and 3 new cases (54 female,50%) with an average age of 33.1 years (range 1–73 years). The average lesion size was 26.4 mm (range 5–50 mm) in longest axis. All patients underwent an initial resection. There were 46 cases of surgery alone. The remaining cases received adjuvant therapy including radiation (RT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), chemotherapy (CT), or RT and CT. The average follow-up was 61.4 months (range 1–240 months). OS at 1 year was 96.9%, at 5 years was 87.5%, and at 10 years was 80.2%. Overall progression-free survival (PFS) was 57.4%. Statistical significance was observed in PFS in the surgery plus SRS group and surgery plus CT and RT group. Surgery with SRS had the best PFS (75%), and OS at 1 year (100%) and 5 years (88.9%). Surgery with CT and RT had the best OS at 10 years (85.7%).
Conclusion
We describe a case series and literature review of PTPR to help guide the most effec-tive treatment strategies for this rare disease entity. We recommend surgery followed by SRS as the treatment of choice because of its best PFS and 5-year survival rates. We would also recommend adding chemotherapy in the event of disease progression or recurrence as adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy provided the best 10-year survival.
