1.The prevalence of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among obstetrics and gynecology resident physicians in selected hospitals in Manila.

OBJECTIVES
This study aims to determine the prevalence of CF and compassion satisfaction (CS) among OBGYN resident physicians in selected hospitals in Manila and identify the associated contributory factors
MATERIALS AND METHODSA cross-sectional study was conducted among 105 OBGYN residents using the Professional Quality of Life Scale Version 5 (ProQOL 5), which measures CS and CF—further divided into burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS). Data were collected through an online survey and analyzed using Jamovi software. Descriptive statistics were reported as frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations and 95% confidence intervals. Associations between variables were determined using independent t-tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with a significance level set at p<0.05.
RESULTSMost residents scored moderate levels in CS (68.6%), BO (72.4%) and STS (73.3%). Significant associations were found between all three subscales and most work-related factors such as hours of sleep per day, working hours per week and frequency of being called in during offduty hours. Marital status and parity were also significantly associated with higher BO and STS scores.
CONCLUSIONThe study highlights the presence of CF among OBGYN residents with reported associations with work and personal factors. These findings emphasize the need for institutional interventions to support the well-being of resident physicians, especially in demanding clinical environments.

2.Fatal cases of Theileria annulata infection in calves in Portugal associated with neoplastic-like lymphoid cell proliferation.

This study was carried out to investigate fifteen cases of acute lethal infection of calves (< or = 4 months of age) by the protozoan parasite Theileria (T.) annulata in the south of Portugal. Calves developed multifocal to coalescent nodular skin lesions, similar to multicentric malignant lymphoma. Infestation with ticks (genus Hyalomma) was intense. Theileria was seen in blood and lymph node smears, and T. annulata infection was confirmed by isolation of schizont-transformed cells and sequencing of hypervariable region 4 of the 18S rRNA gene. At necropsy, hemorrhagic nodules or nodules with a hemorrhagic halo were seen, particularly in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, skeletal and cardiac muscles, pharynx, trachea and intestinal serosa. Histologically, nodules were formed by large, round, lymphoblastoid neoplastic-like cells. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) identified these cells as mostly CD3 positive T lymphocytes and MAC387 positive macrophages. A marker for B lymphocytes (CD79alphacy) labeled very few cells. T. annulata infected cells in these nodules were also identified by IHC through the use of two monoclonal antibodies (1C7 and 1C12) which are diagnostic for the parasite. It was concluded that the pathological changes observed in the different organs and tissues were caused by proliferation of schizont-infected macrophages, which subsequently stimulate a severe uncontrolled proliferation of uninfected T lymphocytes.
