Objective: To evaluate the performance of supplemental automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) added to mammography-based breast cancer screening for women with nondense breasts. Materials and Methods: A retrospective search of radiology databases at two tertiary institutions identified asymptomatic women with nondense breasts who underwent breast cancer screening using both digital mammography (DM) and supplemental ABUS between January 2020 and December 2023. We excluded women without sufficient follow-up data or those without an established final diagnosis, including histopathologic results. The performance measures of DM alone and ABUS combined with DM (ABUS plus DM) were compared. The primary outcome was the cancer detection rate (CDR), and the secondary outcomes were sensitivity and specificity. Subgroup analyses were performed for women with scattered fibroglandular density and almost entirely fatty breasts. Results: A total of 2,904 pairs of screening examinations were performed in 1,683 women (59 ± 10 years), detecting 26 cancers. In comparison with DM alone, ABUS plus DM showed higher CDR (9.0 vs. 7.9 per 1,000 examinations, P < 0.001), higher sensitivity (100% [26/26] vs. 88.5% [23/26], P < 0.001), and lower specificity (95.0% [2,735/2,878] vs. 97.9% [2,817/2,878], P < 0.001). In women with scattered fibroglandular density, ABUS increased the CDR from 7.4 to 8.5 per 1,000 examinations and improved the sensitivity from 87.0% [20/23] to 100% [23/23] (P < 0.001). In women with almost entirely fatty breasts, ABUS plus DM showed the same CDR (16.4 per 1,000 examinations) and sensitivity (100% [3/3]) as DM alone. Three cancers (11.5% [3/26]), all of which were stage T1N0, were detected only by supplemental ABUS. Conclusion Supplemental ABUS improved cancer detection and sensitivity in women with nondense breasts, with the benefits primarily observed in those with scattered fibroglandular density.

Background: Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a crucial role in the development of occlusive vascular diseases through abnormal proliferation and migration. This pathological behavior is closely associated with mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage. The mitochondrial carrier protein solute carrier family 25 member 33 (SLC25A33), essential for nucleoside transport, is integral to mtDNA production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of SLC25A33 inhibition on the proliferation and migration of VSMCs, as well as its impact on neointima formation. Methods: VSMCs were isolated from the thoracic aorta of 4-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats. The effects of small interfering RNAinduced silencing of SLC25A33 mRNA on platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-induced proliferation and migration of VSMCs were analyzed. The in vivo effects of targeting the SLC25A33 gene on neointima formation were evaluated using a murine carotid artery ligation model by perivascularly applying Lenti-shSLC25A33 with Pluronic F-127 gel. Results: First, we observed an upregulation of the SLC25A33 protein in the carotid artery ligation-induced neointima in mice. Silencing of SLC25A33 suppressed the PDGF-stimulated proliferation and migration of VSMCs and cell cycle progression. Knockdown of SLC25A33 inhibited PDGF-induced production of mtDNA and ROS, consequently inactivating the cyclic GMP-AMP synthesis (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING)-TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1)-nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. Furthermore, the downregulation of SLC25A33 reduced carotid artery ligation-induced neointima in mice. Conclusion This study suggests that targeting SLC25A33 in VSMCs could be a novel therapeutic strategy to prevent occlusive vascular diseases.

Background: The management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at the national level is necessary for the health and well-being of individuals in society. The purpose of this study was to propose a redesign of the STI surveillance system by collecting opinions from experts. Methods: After the major STIs were reviewed, 1) gonorrhea, 2) chancroid, 3) Mycoplasma genitalium infection, and 4) trichomoniasis were selected as diseases requiring a redesign of the surveillance system through the Delphi method, a technique for solving problems by collecting opinions from experts. The expert panel was selected from experts on STIs (n = 17) and included members of the Korean Association of Urogenital Tract Infection and Inflammation, the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases, and the 3rd advisory committee on STIs. Results: The experts agreed upon the exclusion of surveillance for chancroid on the basis of the low incidence, with an agreement rate of 83%. The experts agreed upon the inclusion of M. genitalium in the surveillance system, with a high agreement rate of 88%. However, there was disagreement among the experts on whether to include trichomoniasis in the surveillance system and whether to switch to a mandatory surveillance system for gonorrhea. Conclusion Although a consensus was not reached in some of the surveys in this study, it involved the collection of various expert opinions. Therefore, policies should be promoted with a prioritized focus on items with high agreement, but items for which no consensus was reached need to be reviewed in greater depth through additional research and investigation.

This study aimed to investigate changes in candidemia incidence, species distribution, antifungal susceptibility, initial antifungal use, and mortality trends in Korea before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective analysis was conducted on candidemia cases from two tertiary care hospitals in Korea between 2017 and 2022. Data were compared between the pre-pandemic (2017-2019) and pandemic (2020-2022) periods. Statistical methods included incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and multivariate Cox regression to assess 30-day mortality risk factors. A total of 470 candidemia cases were identified, with 48.7% occurring pre-pandemic and 51.3% during the pandemic. While the overall incidence of candidemia remained similar across the two periods (IRR 1.15;p=0.13), the incidence in intensive care units (ICUs) significantly increased during the pandemic (IRR 1.50; p<0.01). The distribution of Candida species did not differ significantly between the two periods. Fluconazole non-susceptibility in C. albicans markedly decreased (10.0% vs. 0.9%, p<0.01), whereas C. glabrata exhibited a significant rise in caspofungin non-susceptibility during the pandemic (0% vs. 22.4%, p<0.01).Echinocandin use increased (21.8% vs. 34.4%; p<0.01), while fluconazole use declined (48.0% vs. 32.8%; p<0.01). Although the 30-day mortality rate was higher during the pandemic (60.2% vs. 57.2%), the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.57).The findings highlight the need for region-specific surveillance and tailored management strategies to improve candidemia outcomes, especially during healthcare disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: and Purpose: Plasma biomarkers, including phosphorylated tau (ptau217), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light chain (NfL), are promising tools for detecting Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. However, cross-laboratory reproducibility remains a challenge, even when using identical analytical platforms such as single-molecule array (Simoa). This study aimed to compare plasma biomarker measurements (ptau217, GFAP, and NfL) between 2 laboratories, the University of Gothenburg (UGOT) and DNAlink, and evaluate their associations with amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Methods: Plasma biomarkers were measured using Simoa platforms at both laboratories:the UGOT and DNAlink Incorporation. Diagnostic performance for predicting amyloid PET positivity, cross-laboratory agreement, and the impact of normalization techniques were assessed. Bland-Altman plots and correlation analyses were employed to evaluate agreement and variability. Results: Plasma ptau217 concentrations exhibited strong correlations with amyloid PET global centiloid values, with comparable diagnostic performance between laboratories (area under the curve=0.94 for UGOT and 0.95 for DNAlink). Cross-laboratory agreement for ptau217 was excellent (r=0.96), improving further after natural log transformation. GFAP and NfL also demonstrated moderate to strong correlations (r=0.86 for GFAP and r=0.99 for NfL), with normalization reducing variability. Conclusions Plasma biomarker measurements were consistent across laboratories using identical Simoa platforms, with strong diagnostic performance and improved agreement after normalization. These findings support the scalability of plasma biomarkers for multicenter studies and underscore their potential for standardized applications in AD research and clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: Humidifier disinfectants (HDs) were sold in Korea from 1994 until their recall in 2011. We examined the incidence patterns of 8 respiratory diseases before and after the HD recall and estimated the attributable risk in the Korean population. METHODS: Using National Health Insurance data from 2002 to 2019, we performed age–cohort–period and differences-in-diffference analyses (comparing periods before vs. after the recall) to estimate the population-attributable fraction and the excess number of episodes. The database comprised 51 million individuals (99% of the Korean population). The incidence of 8 diseases—acute upper respiratory infection (AURI), acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI), asthma, pneumonia, chronic sinusitis (CS), interstitial lung disease (ILD), bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—was defined by constructing episodes of care based on patterns of medical care and the clinical characteristics of each disease. RESULTS: The relative risks (RRs) for AURI, ALRI, asthma, pneumonia, CS, and ILD were elevated among younger individuals (with an RR as high as 82.18 for AURI in males), whereas chronic conditions such as bronchiectasis, COPD, and ILD showed higher RRs in older individuals. During the HD exposure period, the population-attributable risk percentage ranged from 4.6% for bronchiectasis to 25.1% for pneumonia, with the excess number of episodes ranging from 6,218 for ILD to 3,058,861 for CS. Notably, females of reproductive age (19-44 years) experienced 1.1-9.2 times more excess episodes than males. CONCLUSIONS This study provides epidemiological evidence that inhalation exposure to HDs affects the entire respiratory tract and identifies vulnerable groups.

Purpose: The study aims to confirm the mediating effect of nursing professional pride in the relationship between nursing practice environment, nursing performance, and retention intention. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted from December 13 to 31, 2021, involving 127 nurses. The following statistical analysis was conducted: t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, and Hayes Process Macro Model 4 (to test the mediating effect). Results: Nursing practice environment showed a significant positive correlation with nursing performance, retention intention, and nursing professional pride. Nursing practice performance showed a positive correlation with retention intention and nursing professional pride, and retention intention showed a significant positive correlation with nursing professional pride. The mediating effect of nursing professional pride was found in the effect of nurses' nursing practice environment on their retention intention. In addition, the mediating effect of nursing professional pride was found in the effect of nurses' nursing practice performance on their retention intention. Conclusion Through this study, it was confirmed that nursing professional pride is a major A factor affecting retention intention in the hospital. Therefore, in order to increase nurses' retention intention to remain in Hospital, the basis of basic data was presented for strategy development.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a narrative therapy training program using MetaverseZEP on attitudes toward severe mental illness, counselor self-efficacy, and emotional exhaustion in psychiatric mental health nurses. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants included 47 psychiatric mental health nurses. The program consisted of 14 sessions, each lasting 60 minutes, conducted over four weeks (three to four sessions per week). Its effectiveness was assessed using pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test with the Attitudes to Severe Mental Illness Scale, Counselor Self-Efficacy Scale, and Emotional Exhaustion Scale. Data were analyzed using x2 tests, Fisher’s exact probability test, t-tests, and repeated measures ANOVA in IBM SPSS Statistics 25. Results: Participants in the experimental group showed significant improvements in attitudes toward severe mental illness (F=3.29, p=.047) and counseling self-efficacy (F=7.14, p=.002) compared to the control group. Conclusion The narrative therapy training program using MetaverseZEP effectively enhances counselor self-efficacy and attitudes toward severe mental illness in psychiatric mental health nurses. These findings suggest its potential as a valuable nurse training program.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections impose a significant burden on antibiotic usage, healthcare expenditures, and morbidity. Therefore, it is crucial to revise policies to minimize such losses. This nationwide survey aimed to evaluate infection prevention and control (IPC) components in healthcare facilities and encourage improvements in acute care hospitals with inadequate infection prevention settings. This study aims to enhance the infection control capabilities of healthcare facilities. Methods: From December 27, 2021, to May 13, 2022, we conducted a survey of 1,767 acute care hospitals in the Republic of Korea. A survey was conducted to evaluate the infection control components in 1,767 acute care hospitals. Infection control officers provided direct responses to a systematically developed questionnaire. Subsequently, 10% of the respondents were randomly selected for the site investigation. Results: Overall, 1,197 (67.7%) hospitals responded to the online survey. On-site investigations were conducted at 125 hospitals. Hospitals with ≥ 150 beds are advised to have an IPC team under Article 3 of the Medical Service Act; however, only 87.0% (598/687) of hospitals with ≥ 100 beds had one. Conversely, 22.7% (116/510) of hospitals with < 100 beds had an IPC team. Regulations for hand hygiene, waste management, healthcare worker protection and safety, environmental cleaning, standard precautions, and prevention of the transmission of multidrug-resistant pathogens were present in 84.2%, 80.1%, 77.4%, 76.2%, 75.8%, and 63.5% of the hospitals, respectively. Hospitals with < 100 beds had low availability of all categories of standard operating procedures. Conclusion This study is the first national survey of acute care hospitals in the Republic of Korea. The data presented in the current study will improve the understanding of IPC status and will help establish a survey system. Our survey provides a basis for improving policies related to IPC in healthcare facilities.
