Background:
Although the association between handgrip strength and glycemic control has been reported, studies conducted exclusively within specific occupational groups remain limited. To explore the association between handgrip strength and metabolic health in industrial settings, this study examined the relationship between relative handgrip strength and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) among male automobile manufacturing workers using vibration tools in South Korea.
Methods:
Using 66,212 occupational health examination records collected at Inha University Hospital between January 2024 and April 2025, a total of 3,365 workers with HbA1c and handgrip strength measurements were identified. After excluding duplicates (n = 1,536), female workers (n = 2), and records without Hb and estimated glomerular filtration rate, 1,823 male participants were included in the final analysis. Relative handgrip strength was calculated as the maximum value of bilateral grip strength divided by body mass index. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between relative handgrip strength and HbA1c, adjusting for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, current hypertension, current dyslipidemia, current hypoglycemic-agents use, family diabetes history, leisure-time physical activity, and resistance exercise.
Results:
Relative handgrip strength was inversely associated with HbA1c levels (B: –0.060; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.081 to −0.039; p < 0.001). The association was strongest among normoglycemic participants (B: −0.185; 95% CI: −0.305 to −0.065; p = 0.003). Effect size was reduced but significantly associated among individuals with prediabetes (B: −0.115; 95% CI: −0.180 to −0.050; p < 0.001) and further attenuated to a borderline significance in individuals with diabetes (B: −0.023; 95% CI: −0.050 to 0.003; p = 0.082). These findings indicate that greater muscle strength relative to body size is related to better glycemic control.
Conclusions
Handgrip strength was associated with HbA1c levels in industrial workers. This study suggests that handgrip strength may provide complementary information on metabolic health in occupational settings.

Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility 2026;32(1):86-98
Background/Aims:
Spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently impairs defecation, severely affecting the quality of life. This study examines compensatory neural remodeling after SCI, focusing on basal colonic contractility, neural responses to electrical field stimulation, and alterations in excitatory cholinergic and inhibitory nitrergic pathways.
Methods:
Female Sprague–Dawley rats underwent either sham surgery or T10 spinal cord transection and were categorized into 3 groups: sham, 1-week post-SCI (acute), and 4-week post-SCI (chronic). Colonic contractility was assessed in an organ bath using electrical field stimulation in the presence of a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor. Neural protein expression was analyzed by immunofluorescence and Western blotting.
Results:
SCI produced region- and time-dependent impairments in colonic contractility, with distinct alterations in the proximal circular and longitudinal muscles across acute and chronic phases. Neural excitability shifted dynamically, showing enhanced excitatory activity in the proximal longitudinal muscle at 1-week and the distal circular muscle at 4-week post-SCI. Protein analysis revealed increased neuronal nitric oxide synthase in the proximal colon, decreasedsoluble guanylyl cyclase in the distal colon, upregulated muscarinic M3 receptor in the proximal colon, and reduced vaso-active intestinal peptide receptor 1 in both proximal and distal regions.
Conclusion
SCI induces spatiotemporal remodeling of excitatory and inhibitory neural pathways, contributing to colonic dysmotility and revealing potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Cardiovascular Imaging Asia 2026;10(1):2-10
Artificial intelligence-based segmentation and quantification is a hot topic in cardiovascular imaging. However, the development of clinically useful artificial intelligence-based models for congenital heart disease is challenging owing to morphologic heterogeneity and limited data for training. Although cardiovascular computed tomography is increasingly used in evaluating patients with congenital heart disease, only a few reports have evaluated artificial intelligence-based segmentation algorithms for congenital heart disease. To be familiarized with this trend, we need to understand state-of-the-art segmentation techniques for cardiovascular digital twins as well as basic concept, current challenges, and potential solutions of artificial intelligence-based methods. Additionally, in this review, our learnings from the literature and our pilot study are summarized, and future directions are suggested.

Investigative and Clinical Urology 2026;67(1):52-61
Purpose:
To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and nocturia in a nationally representative U.S. adult population, focusing on individual metabolic components and subgroup differences by age and sex.
Materials and Methods:
We analyzed data from 8,518 adults aged ≥20 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2014. Nocturia was defined as ≥2 nighttime voids. MetS was defined by the presence of ≥3 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were used to assess associations, adjusting for demographic and behavioral covariates.
Results:
Overall, 23.3% of participants had MetS and 29.6% reported nocturia. MetS was independently associated with nocturia (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.387, 95% confidence interval 1.236–1.557). A dose–response relationship was observed, with nocturia risk increasing. Central obesity (OR 1.564), elevated fasting glucose (OR 1.397), and elevated blood pressure (OR 1.311) showed the strongest associations. RCS analyses revealed linear associations for waist circumference and systolic blood pressure, and nonlinear associations for diastolic blood pressure and glucose. Sex-specific analyses revealed distinct nonlinear patterns, particularly for waist circumference among male participants and triglyceride levels among female participants. The association remained consistent across most age and sex groups, except in males aged 20–40 years.
Conclusions
MetS and its components are independently associated with nocturia. The observed sex-specific differences suggest that metabolic contributors to nocturia may differ by sex supporting nocturia as a potential clinical marker of underlying cardiometabolic dysfunction.

Clinical Psychopharmacology and Neuroscience 2026;24(1):2-14
The sixth edition of the Korean Medication Algorithm Project for Depressive Disorder (KMAP-DD) was published in 2025. This review compared KMAP-DD 2025 with four major international clinical practice guidelines: Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Major Depressive Disorders, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Depression Guideline, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Clinical Practice Guidelines for Mood Disorders, and British Association for Psychopharmacology Guideline. While KMAP-DD is based on expert consensus, and others on evidence-based methods, overall treatment strategies for depressive episodes were fairly consistent. Especially, KMAP-DD 2025 offers more structured recommendations in areas lacking strong evidence, such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perinatal depression, and depression with medical comorbidities. KMAP-DD 2025 also reflected Korean clinical practice patterns emphasizing rapid symptom relief and early use of combination strategies. Despite limitations as a consensus-based guideline, KMAP-DD 2025 complements evidence-based approaches and provides practical, situation-specific guidance for real-world clinical decision-making in Korea.

Journal of Cardiovascular Imaging 2026;34(1):10-
Background:
Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) requires time-intensive integration of quantitative measure‑ ments and qualitative visual assessment. Fully automated artificial intelligence (AI)-based analysis may reduce total analysis time while preserving accuracy, but systematic real-world validation remains limited.
Methods:
This prospective, single-center pilot study enrolled 40 TTE examinations. Identical deidentified DICOM datasets were independently provided to a trained cardiac sonographer and a fully automated AI system comprising quantitative and qualitative visual interpretation modules. All outputs were compared with a cardiologist-adjudicated reference standard. Primary endpoints were total analysis time and noninferiority of AI-derived left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) versus the reference standard, with a prespecified margin of 3 percentage points (one-sided α = 0.025).
Results:
Median analysis time was 94 s (interquartile range [IQR], 82–106 s) for the AI workflow versus 490 s (IQR, 438–626 s) for the human workflow (P < 0.001). AI-derived LVEF met the noninferiority criterion (mean difference, 0.00 percentage points; upper one-sided 95% confidence bound, 1.41 percentage points; P < 0.001), with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.902 (95% confidence interval, 0.822–0.947). ICCs for secondary quantitative indi‑ ces ranged from 0.625 to 0.989. For aortic regurgitation severity grading, AI’s overall accuracy was 75.0% (quadratic weighted κ = 0.762), compared with 82.5% for human interpretation (κ = 0.812, McNemar P = 0.579).
Conclusions
Fully automated AI-assisted TTE analysis substantially reduced total analysis time while maintaining noninferior LVEF accuracy and acceptable performance across secondary quantitative and qualitative indices. These findings support the use of AI as a practical workflow accelerator in routine echocardiography.

Anticancer activities of Licochalcone D (LCD) in human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells HCT116 and oxaliplatin-resistant HCT116 (HCT116-OxR) were determined. Cell viability assay and soft agar assay were used to analyze antiproliferative activity of LCD.Flow cytometry was performed to determine effects of LCD on apoptosis, cell cycle distribution, reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) dysfunction, and multi-caspase activity in CRC cells. Western blot analysis was used to monitor levels of proteins involved in cell cycle and apoptosis signaling pathways. LCD suppressed the growth and anchorageindependent colony formation of both HCT116 and HCT116-OxR cells. Cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry indicated that LCD induced cell cycle arrest and increased cells in sub-G1 phase. In parallel with the antiproliferative effect of LCD, LCD up-regulated levels of p21 and p27 while downregulating cyclin B1 and cdc2. In addition, phosphorylation levels of JNK and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) were increased by LCD. Inhibition of these kinases somehow prevented the antiproliferative effect of LCD. Moreover, LCD increased ROS and deregulated mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to the activation of multiple caspases. An ROS scavenger N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) or pan-caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK prevented the antiproliferative effect of LCD, supporting that ROS generation and caspase activation mediated LCD-induced apoptosis in CRC cells. In conclusion, LCD exerted antitumor activity in CRC cells by inducing ROS generation and phosphorylation of JNK and p38 MAPK. These results support that LCD could be further developed as a chemotherapeutic agent for treating CRC.

Purpose:
Inotuzumab ozogamicin (INO) has demonstrated a safe bridging role to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (R/R B-ALL). How‑ ever, hepatic veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (VOD/SOS) is frequently observed. This study aimed to identify significant features of INO-associated VOD/SOS.
Methods:
We reviewed seven cases of hepatic VOD/SOS that developed either during INO salvage or after alloge‑ neic HSCT following INO-induced complete remission (CR). Diagnosis and severity grading of VOD/SOS were based on the revised criteria from the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. Defibrotide was used to treat severe to very severe cases.
Results:
Four patients developed VOD/SOS during INO salvage therapy (at 21 and 36 days post-INO1, 77 days postINO3, and 21 days post-INO5), while three were diagnosed at 2, 5, and 10 days post-HSCT following INO-induced CR.Doppler ultrasonography revealed preserved portal vein flow (range 10.2–26.0 cm/sec) and normal hepatic artery resistive index (RI, range 0.56–0.74) in all but one patient (RI 0.83). Despite this, all patients presented with massive ascites and progressively elevated total bilirubin levels. All cases were classified as severe to very severe; six were treated with defibrotide and one underwent liver transplantation. Most patients ultimately died owing to VOD/SOS progression.
Conclusion
Post-INO VOD/SOS manifested as two different clinical settings and was characterized by preserved portal vein flow, which complicated diagnosis. Despite timely defibrotide administration, clinical outcomes were poor. These findings emphasize the need for vigilance and potential consideration of prophylactic strategies for prevention of INO-associated VOD/SOS.
