1. Outpatient prevention counseling for malaria in northwest Nigeria: A single-centre descriptive cross-sectional study

To assess the proportion of caregivers of children and patients who received malaria prevention counseling from their healthcare provider at the time of outpatient malaria treatment. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving 353 randomly selected adult patients and caregivers of children attending the general and paediatric outpatient clinics of a Nigerian hospital. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on participants' sociodemographics and last malaria-episode characteristics. Chi square test and logistic regression analysis were used to determine factors associated with and predictors of receiving malaria-prevention counseling, respectively. Results: The mean age of the respondents was (33.6±9.6) years; they were predominantly females (257, 72.8%). Most had at least secondary-level education (304, 86.1%); the family size was mostly 1-6 persons in 202 (57.2%) respondents. 2.Occurrence of antibiotic resistant Campylobacter in wild birds and poultry

Aims:
Campylobacter is a major cause of gastroenteritis in humans worldwide, particularly in developed countries and is reported to show an increased trend in antibiotic resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence of Campylobacter in wild birds, poultry and in poultry environments in Selangor, Malaysia as well as to determine the rate of antibiotic resistance among Campylobacter isolates from poultry and wild birds.
Methodology and results:
The wild birds were trapped near poultry farm areas and in open areas which were more than 5 km away from poultry farms (refered to as open environment). Of 57 wild birds trapped near the farm environment, 17.5% were positive for Campylobacter and out of these, 90% were Campylobacter jejuni. Of a total of 77 birds in the open environment, 22.1% were positive for Campylobacter and of these 88.7% were C. jejuni. The poultry farms consisted of 3 chicken and 2 duck farms. About 60% of the chickens and 44.8% of the ducks were positive for Campylobacter of which 80% were C. jejuni, while 20% were Campylobacter coli. The Campylobacter isolates were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility test using disk diffusion method against 12 antibiotics. All the isolates (100%) from wild birds around poultry houses were resistant to at least one antibiotic.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
The findings showed 93% of the isolates from wild birds were resistant to at least two antibiotics. Campylobacter isolates from poultry in the farms were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The antibiotic resistant Campylobacter is of public health importance.
3.Saponins-rich fraction of Calotropis procera leaves elicit no antitrypanosomal activity in a rat model

Objective:To examine the in vitro and in vivo anti-Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi ) activity of saponins-rich fraction of Calotropis procera (cpsf) leaves as well as the effect of the fraction on the parasite-induced anemia. Methods:A 60-minutes time course experiment was conducted with various concentrations of the fraction using a 96-well microtiter plate technique, and subsequently used to treat experimentally T. evansi infected rats at 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight. Index of anemia was analyzed in all animals during the experiment. Results:The cpsf did not demonstrate an in vitro antitrypanosomal activity. Further, the cpsf treatments did not significantly (P>0.05) keep the parasites lower than the infected untreated groups. At the end of the experiment, all T. evansi infected rats developed anemia whose severity was not significantly (P>0.05) ameliorated by the cpsf treatment. Conclusions:It was concluded that saponins derived from Calotropis procera leaves could not elicit in vitro and in vivo activities against T. evansi.
4.Effects of vitamin E administration on Plasmodium berghei induced pathological changes and oxidative stress in mice

Abstract. The effects of daily intraperitoneal doses of 1000 i.u/kg body weight of vitamin E
on the course of Plasmodium berghei NK 65 infection and the parasite-induced anemia as
well as alterations in the relative weight of some selected organs and antioxidant status in
mice were investigated. The number of parasitized red cells were not initially affected by the
vitamin administration but were persistently lowered after 11th day post infection to the
termination of the experiment. The P. berghei infection was found to induce anemia, significantly
(P<0.05) increased the relative weight of liver, spleen and kidney but significantly decreased
(P<0.05) the relative brain weight. However, all the parasite-induced changes in these
parameters were significantly (P<0.05) ameliorated by the vitamin administration. Furthermore,
malonydialdehyde concentration in the serum, liver and brain of infected animals was
significantly (P<0.05) increased whereas superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were
significantly (P<0.05) decreased by the infection. But vitamin E administration was found to,
a significant degree (P<0.05), reversed the disease-induced alterations in these oxidative
stress markers. It was concluded that vitamin E at the dose and route used prevented P.
berghei induced anemia as well as alterations in relative organ weight and antioxidant status
in mice
