1.Food insecurity and its associated characteristics of the elderly in Seoul:analysis of the data from the Seoul Food Survey 2023

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
This study examined the socio-demographic and dietary characteristics of the elderly in Seoul according to their food insecurity status and analyzed the characteristics associated with food insecurity.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
The data from 513 elderly individuals aged 65 or older were analyzed using the raw data from the Seoul Food Survey 2023. The subjects were classified into food-secure or food-insecure groups. The socio-demographic and dietary characteristics of each group were analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the characteristics associated with food insecurity among the elderly in Seoul.
RESULTS:
The proportion of the food-insecure group was 56.9% among the total elderly in Seoul. The main reasons for experiencing food insecurity were environmental (38.0%), followed by physical (37.5%) and financial (24.5%). The food-insecure group had a higher frequency of skipping breakfast and eating alone than the food-secure group while having lower dietary literacy and food environment satisfaction. Logistic regression analysis showed that the elderly living alone were approximately four times (odds ratio [OR], 3.59; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.52–8.51) more likely to suffer food insecurity than those living with others. Higher digital food literacy (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.41–0.97) and food environment satisfaction (OR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.20–0.74) were associated with a lower likelihood of food insecurity.
CONCLUSION
These results suggest that policies aimed at improving food security for the elderly in Seoul should prioritize those living alone. Educational programs designed to enhance the ability to purchase online food, use self-service kiosks in restaurants, and use food delivery apps would effectively decrease food insecurity among the elderly in Seoul.Furthermore, policies aimed at improving the food environment may also help reduce food insecurity among this population.

This review examines the challenges associated with occupational disease surveillance in Korea, particularly emphasizing the limitations of current data sources such as the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance (IACI) statistics and special health examinations. The IACI system undercounts cases due to its emphasis on severe diseases and restrictions on approvals. Special health examinations, although they cover a broad workforce, are constrained by their annual scheduling, which leads to missed acute illnesses and subclinical conditions. The paper also explores the history of occupational disease surveillance in Korea, highlighting the fragmented and disease-specific approach of earlier systems. The authors introduce the newly established Korea Occupational Disease Surveillance Center (KODSC), a comprehensive nationwide system designed to gather, analyze, and interpret data on occupational diseases through a network of regional centers. By incorporating hospital-based surveillance and focusing on acute poisonings and other sentinel events, the KODSC aims to overcome the limitations of previous systems and promote collaboration with various agencies. Although it is still in the early stages of implementation, the KODSC demonstrates potential for improving data accuracy and contributing valuable insights for public health policy.
3.Nationwide big data analysis of inguinal hernia surgery trends in South Korea (2016–2022)

Purpose:
This study aimed to analyze nationwide trends and regional disparities in inguinal hernia surgeries in South Korea between 2016 and 2022. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate changes in surgery frequency, including urban concentration and the introduction of robotic surgery.
Methods:
This retrospective review used nationwide data on inguinal hernia surgeries from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database.
Results:
From 2016 to 2022, 254,367 inguinal hernia surgeries were performed in South Korea, with males accounting for 88.9% of cases. The annual number of surgeries fluctuated, particularly in 2020, owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Medical costs increased from $1,218.4 to $1,970 on average, whereas patient copayments rose from $180.2 to $293.3. Robotic inguinal hernia surgeries, introduced in 2019, increased to 226 cases in 2022. Pediatric surgeries steadily declined, whereas adult surgeries remained stable, with a slight increase in 2022. The average hospital stay did not change significantly but varied between pediatric and adult patients. Regional disparities were notable, especially in pediatric surgery rates between metropolitan areas, such as Seoul and the surrounding provinces.
Conclusion
This study highlights stable overall surgery rates, a decline in pediatric cases, and an increase in robotic inguinal hernia surgeries. The persistent concentration of healthcare services in metropolitan areas suggests a need for policy interventions to address regional disparities and ensure equitable healthcare access. The findings underscore the importance of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare distribution and the need for long-term strategies to address changing surgical trends.
