Background:
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by erythema, papules, ocular symptoms, and heightened sensitivity. Patients with neurogenic symptoms such as burning or stinging remain particularly difficult to manage. Current guidelines often underrepresent energy-based devices (EBDs), pigmentary sequelae, psychosocial burden, and ocular comorbidities.
Objective:
To examine Korean dermatologists’ expert perspectives on rosacea management, focusing on skin sensitivity, neurogenic symptoms, pigmentary changes, psychosocial impact, ocular involvement, and EBD use.
Methods:
A web-based, 29-item survey was administered to 25 board-certified Korean dermatologists (May–June 2025). Quantitative and qualitative responses were analyzed.
Results:
Erythematotelangiectatic and papulopustular phenotypes with sensitivity skin predominated. EBDs (pulsed dye laser, intense pulsed light) were frequently used but limited by cost and sensitivity issues. Neurogenic symptoms were recognized but rarely treated with neuromodulators. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation was infrequent, yet monitoring was inconsistent.Psychosocial and ocular aspects were acknowledged but seldomly systematically addressed.Respondents expressed interest in emerging adjunctive treatments such as cold plasma, skin boosters, and holistic care approaches.
Conclusion
Korean dermatologists adopt individualized strategies for rosacea, yet practice gaps remain regarding neurogenic symptoms, pigmentary complications, and psychosocial and ocular comorbidities. Findings support the need for updated multidisciplinary, phenotype-driven guidelines aligned with real-world practice.

Background:
With the increasing demand for surgical procedures in dermatology, resident education in surgical dermatology has become important for delivering high-quality treatment. However, it remains unclear if a sufficient number of residency programs with quality standards exist, as there has been little research on this subject in South Korea.
Objective:
To identify the status of surgical dermatology education among residents and assess dermatologists’ perceptions of the subject.
Methods:
A 35-question survey was developed and distributed to all resident training hospitals and local clinics listed by the Korean Society of Dermatologic Surgery. Only third- and fourthyear residents were included and board-certified specialists from training hospitals and local clinics responded to the surveys.
Results:
Survey participants included 88 residents and 120 specialists of whom one-quarter of the residents attended regular monthly educational sessions. Most residents (93%) participated in cosmetic procedures, and many performed laser therapy. However, the opportunity for toxin or filler injection was rare, with only 12% of the residents having experience with filler injections. In response, 49% of residents and 32% of specialists said that more cosmetic training was required, whereas 28% of residents and 50% of specialists said that more training for both cosmetic and conventional surgeries was necessary.
Conclusion
The survey demonstrated a need for more training programs in surgical dermatology during residency and a perception gap between residents and specialists. Therefore, developing educational residency programs that focus on basic dermatologic surgery principles and their applications in cosmetic procedures is essential.

Nutrition Research and Practice 2023;17(2):241-256
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
Diabetes-specific oral nutritional supplements (ONS) have anti-hyperglycemic effects, while D-allulose exerts anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effects. In this study, we investigated the efficacy and safety of diabetes-specific ONS, including allulose, on glycemic and weight changes in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
A single-arm, historical-control pilot clinical trial was conducted on 26 overweight or obese patients with T2DM (age range: 30–70 yrs). The participants were administered 2 packs of diabetes-specific ONS, including allulose (200 kcal/200 mL), every morning for 8 weeks. The glycemic profiles, obesity-related parameters, and lipid profiles were assessed to evaluate the efficacy of ONS.
RESULTS:
After 8 weeks, fasting blood glucose (FBG) level significantly decreased from 139.00 ± 29.66 mg/dL to 126.08 ± 32.00 mg/dL (P = 0.007) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) improved (7.23 ± 0.82% vs. 7.03 ± 0.69%, P = 0.041). Moreover, the fasting insulin (δ: −1.81 ± 3.61 μU/mL, P = 0.017) and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (δ: −0.87 ± 1.57, P = 0.009) levels decreased at 8 weeks, and body weight significantly decreased from 67.20 ± 8.29 kg to 66.43 ± 8.12 kg (P = 0.008). Body mass index (BMI) also decreased in accordance with this (from 25.59 ± 1.82 kg/m2 to 25.30 ± 1.86 kg/m2 , P = 0.009), as did waist circumference (δ: −1.31 ± 2.04 cm, P = 0.003).
CONCLUSIONS
The consumption of diabetes-specific ONS with allulose in overweight or obese patients with T2DM improved glycemic profiles, such as FBG, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR, and reduced body weight and BMI.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2022;63(9):747-753
Purpose:
To derive the optimized intraocular lens (IOL) constants from automated and manifest refraction after cataract surgery in Korean patients, and to evaluate whether there is a difference in optimized IOL constants according to the refraction method.
Methods:
This retrospective multicenter cohort study enrolled 4,103 eyes of 4,103 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and in-the-bag IOL implantation at 18 institutes. Optimized IOL constants for the SRK/T, Holladay, Hoffer Q, and Haigis formulas were calculated via autorefraction or manifest refraction of samples using the same biometry and IOL. The IOL constants derived from autorefraction and manifest refraction were compared.
Results:
Of the 4,103 eyes, the majority (62.9%) were measured with an IOLMaster 500 followed by an IOLMaster 700 (15.2%). A total of 33 types of IOLs were used, and the Tecnis ZCB00 was the most frequently used (53.0%). There was no statistically significant difference in IOL constants derived from autorefraction and manifest refraction when IOL constants were optimized with a large number of study subjects. On the other hand, optimized IOL constants derived from autorefraction were significantly smaller than those from manifest refraction when the number of subjects was small.
Conclusions
It became possible to use the IOL constants optimized from Koreans to calculate the IOL power. However, if the IOL constant is optimized using autorefraction in a small sample group, the IOL constant tends to be small, which may lead to refractive error after surgery.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial characteristics of functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) in patients with psychiatric disorders. METHODS: This study was conducted with 144 outpatients visiting the psychiatric clinic at a university hospital. FGIDs were screened according to the Rome III questionnaire-Korean version. Demographic factors were investigated, and psychosocial factors were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Korean, and State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory. Chi-squared test and student's t-test were used as statistical analysis methods. RESULTS: There were differences in education level between two groups divided according to FGID status (χ²=10.139, p=0.017). Comparing the psychiatric disorder by FGID group, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) group showed significant differences (χ²=11.408, p=0.022). According to FGID status, IBS group showed significant differences for anxiety (t=−3.106, p=0.002), depressive symptom (t=−2.105, p=0.037), somatic symptom (t=−3.565, p < 0.001), trait anger (t=−3.683, p < 0.001), anger-in (t=−2.463, p=0.015), and anger-out (t=− 2.355, p=0.020). Functional dyspepsia group showed significant differences for anxiety (t=−4.893, p < 0.001), depressive symptom (t=−3.459, p < 0.001), somatic symptom (t=−7.906, p < 0.001), trait-anger (t=−4.148, p < 0.001), state-anger (t=−2.181, p=0.031), anger-in (t=−2.684, p=0.008), and anger-out (t=−3.005, p=0.003). Nonerosive reflux disease group showed significant differences for anxiety (t=−4.286, p < 0.001), depressive symptom (t=−3.402, p < 0.001), somatic symptom (t=−7.162, p < 0.001), trait anger (t=−2.994, p=0.003), state anger (t=−2.259, p=0.025), anger-in (t=−2.772, p=0.006), and anger-out (t=−2.958, p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with psychiatric disorders had a high prevalence of FGID, and various psychosocial factors contributed to such differences. Therefore, the psychiatric approach can offer better understandings and treatments to patients with FGID.

OBJECTIVES: This clinical study evaluated the effect of light activation on the whitening efficacy and safety of in-office bleaching system containing 15% hydrogen peroxide gel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three volunteers were randomly treated with (n = 17, experimental group) or without light activation (n = 16, control group), using Zoom2 white gel (15% H2O2, Discus Dental) for a total treatment time of 45 min. Visual and instrumental color measurements were obtained using Vitapan Classical shade guide and Shadepilot (DeguDent) at screening test, after bleaching, and 1 month and 3 month after bleaching. Data were analyzed using t-test, repeated measure ANOVA, and chi-squared test. RESULTS: Zoom2 white gel produced significant shade changes in both experimental and control group when pre-treatment shade was compared with that after bleaching. However, shade difference between two groups was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Tooth shade relapse was not detected at 3 months after bleaching. The incidence of transient tooth sensitivity was 39.4%, with being no differences between two groups. CONCLUSIONS: The application of light activation with Zoom2 white gel system neither achieved additional whitening effects nor showed more detrimental influences.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between weight gain and the success of VBAC by using body mass index (BMI). To examine the relationship between weight gain and the success of VBAC by using body mass index (BMI). METHODS: The study compared clinical features taken from 112 patients who tried VBAC at our institute from January 2001 through December 2006. There were divided into two GROUPS: 92 patients for the success (82.1%) and 20 patients for the failure group (17.9%). Excluding 36 patients with no BMI data, we constructed Receive-operating characteristics (ROC) curve to make the optimum BMI value for the prediction of success of VBAC. Based on the BMI 26 or more, two groups of patient were surveyed the interrelation between weight gain and success of VBAC. RESULTS: Between success and failure group, the weight gain during pregnancy showed significant differences which are 11.2+/-4 kg of the success group and 13.2+/-5 kg of the other one (p<0.05) A survey on the availability of the BMI date to estimate success of VBAC, the criteria with the standard BMI 26 is not statistically valuable (p=0.837). By comparing normal weight and overweight based on BMI 26, some factors showed statistically significant discrepancies: number of prenatal visit, maternal weight gain, maternal weight at the time of delivery, use of oxytocin and birth weight. CONCLUSION: BMI value of 26 has limitations in using as an estimate criteria on success of VBAC. Patients, however, who had relatively small scale of weight gain, showed significant clinical factors to increased success rate of VBAC.

Korean Journal of Perinatology 2007;18(3):265-270
Heterotopic pregnancy with coexistiong intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancy, is a rare event in natural pregnancy. However, in recent years, the increase in the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease and use of assisted reproductive technology had led to an increase in the frequency of heterotopic pregnancy. When the diagnosis of heterotopic pregnancy is delayed, maternal mortality and morbidity may be increased, and unwanted loss of intrauterine pregnancy may occur. Therefore, the early diagnosis of heterotopic pregnancy is clinically important, and clinicians have to consider the possibility of heterotopic pregnancy and conduct careful and thorough evaluation if suspected. We experienced a case of heterotopic pregnancy in a woman in the absence of the known risk factors. She underwent underwent spontaneous abortion of intrauterine pregnancy at postoperative 4th day, after laparoscopic salpingectomy for left tubal pregnancy. We report this case with brief review of literature.

Korean Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2007;50(10):1313-1320
OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study show the effect of cardiac disease of pregnant women on the perinatal complications and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: From Jan. 2001 to Nov. 2005, 29 cases of pregnant women with cardiac disease were enrolled and classified by the NYHA (New York Heart Association) classes under the supervision of cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon. The average age of all cases is 29.9 years olds and it consists of 13 primigravida and 16 multigravida. For the examination of cardiac function during the pregnancy, the echocardiography was performed. We evaluated the cardiac disease of pregnant woman with the underlying causes, clinical manifestations during the pregnancy, delivery mode, gestational age at birth, birth weight, Apgar score and perinatal complication. RESULTS: All 29 cases with cardiac diseases are composed of 21 cases of NYHA class I (72.7%), 4 case of NYHA class II (13.7%) and 4 cases of NYHA class III (13.7%). There are 11 cases with congenital heart disease (37.9%), 6 cases with acquired heart disease (20.6%), 9 cases with arrhythmia (31.0%), and 3 cases with other cardiac disease (10.3%). Before the pregnancy, 6 cases of 11 cases with congenital heart disease and 5 cases of 6 cases with acquired heart disease performed the corrected cardiac surgery. Echocardiography was performed on 24 cases. It showed average ejection fraction in left ventricle of NYHA class I (13 cases) and NYHA class II, III (8 cases) were 61.5% and 52.6%, respectively. 7 cases of NYHA class I and 1 case of class II was done on the vaginal delivery. 14 cases of class I pregnant woman were performed the cesarean section according to obstetric indications but 3 cases of class II were performed the cesarean section for the prevention of cardiac risks. 4 cases of class III were performed the cesarean section according to obstetrics indications (2 cases) and for the prevention of cardiac risks (2 cases). For gestational age at birth, the average of NYHA class I was 38.1 weeks and the average of NYHA class II, III was 35.4 weeks. The average birth weight showed 3,022 gm in class I and 2,446 gm in class II and class III. Preterm birth were 3 cases (class II; 1 case, class III ; 2 cases). Low birth weight infant were 5 cases (class I; 3 cases, class II 2 cases). Intrauterine fetal death was a case (class I). Congenital abnormalities at birth were not observed in our study. Although no maternal mortality was observed, 2 cases of pulmonary edema caused by cardiomyopathy in NYHA class III and 1 case of Eisenmenger Syndrome caused by PDA in NYHA class II were developed during the labor. CONCLUSION: In this study, the majority of pregnant women with cardiac disease had the congenital heart diseases. It also showed that they can expect good perinatal outcomes by the adequate prenatal care including cardiac surgery before the pregnancy.
