1.Histopathological evaluation of the Pathology lungs in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Objective:
This study evaluated the inflammatory response in lungs of EAE mice by immunohistochemistry and histochemistry.
Methods:
Eight adult C57BL/6 mice were injected with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35-55 to induce the EAE. Lungs and spinal cords were sampled from the experimental mice at the time of sacrifice and used for the western blotting, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry.
Results:
Histopathological examination revealed inflammatory lesions in the lungs of EAE mice, characterized by infiltration of myeloperoxidase (MPO)- and galectin-3-positive cells, as determined by immunohistochemistry. Increased numbers of collagen fibers in the lungs of EAE mice were confirmed by histopathological analysis. Western blotting revealed significantly elevated level of osteopontin (OPN), cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44), MPO and galectin-3 in the lungs of EAE mice compared with normal controls (p < 0.05).Immunohistochemical analysis revealed both OPN and CD44 in ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1-positive macrophages within the lungs of EAE mice.
Conclusions
and Relevance: Taken together, these findings suggest that the increased OPN level in lungs of EAE mice led to inflammation; concurrent increases in proinflammatory factors (OPN and galectin-3) caused pulmonary impairment.
2.Large Mesenteric Pedunculated Lipoma in a Horse

A seven-month pregnant 15-year-old Thoroughbred mare presented with acute abdominal pain to Jeju National University Equine Hospital. At presentation, a nasogastric intubation revealed 10 L of gastric reflux; rectal palpation and ultrasound revealed dilated loops and thickening of the walls of the small intestine. An exploratory laparotomy revealed strangulation of the small intestine due to a large abdominal mass. The mass was double-ligated and resected blindly due to the short pedicle. An enterectomy was not performed as intestinal motility was detected following the mass removal. Histopathological examination confirmed that the mass was a lipoma, measuring 24 cm × 16 cm × 16 cm in size. On day 8 post-surgery, the mare was discharged without complications. This case report describes the diagnosis and treatment of strangulation of the small intestine by a pedunculated lipoma, thus providing useful information on lipoma in horses.
3.Diagnosis of Coxofemoral Joint Luxation in a Whooper Swan (Cygnus Cygnus) Using Computed Tomography and Radiography

A wild Whooper swan (Cygnus Cygnus) with limping due to an injured left pelvic limb in an accident was rescued on the seashore and transferred to the Jeju Wildlife Rescue Center on November 23rd, 2020. On physical examination, its body condition score was 1 out of 5 due to starvation and dehydration.The left coxofemoral joint was also examined by careful palpating and estimating the damage. Moderated soft tissue swelling and crepitus surrounding the hip joint were confirmed. Radiography and computed tomography (CT) were used together for an accurate diagnosis of the joint. By radiographs readings, it was difficult to accurately confirm the condition of the proximal femur due to superimposition of the synsacrum and internal organs. However, signs such as avulsion fracture of the femoral head and a few fragments around the joint were revealed by CT imaging. Besides, through three-dimensional (3D) image analysis of CT, the dislocated area and condition of the left hip joint could be accurately and easily confirmed. The diagnostic process showing in this paper could be used as a good reference for diagnosing coxofemoral joint luxation in wild swan.
4.Surgical Management of Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis in a Mongolian Cow

Traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP) often referred to as hardware disease is a common disease of cattle, which is considered the most frequent cause of anterior abdominal pain in cattle. The incidence of TRP has decreased significantly, but the diagnosis and treatment of TRP are still clinically significant because of its economic impact. An eight-year-old female Mongolian cow weighing 400 kg, was presented to the Korean (College of Veterinary Medicine, Jeju National University)–Mongolian (School of Veterinary Medicine, Mongolian University of Life Science) volunteer team (KMVT) with the primary complaints of depression and anorexia during their outreach activity for veterinary volunteer service in the field of the suburban farm of Mongolia. TRP was diagnosed based on the clinical symptoms, auscultation, and back grip test results. An emergency rumenotomy was performed with the consent of the owner. The patient was anesthetized using distal paravertebral anesthesia and the inverted L block method while a makeshift restraint frame was constructed on-site. The rumenotomy was performed to explore the rumen and reticulum. Foreign bodies were identified and removed. The surgery was performed successfully. The patient’s recovery after the surgery was normal, and the appetite was restored. This paper describes a case of TRP in a Mongolian cow, including the diagnosis, surgical preparation, and surgery successfully performed in the field of suburban farm of Mongolia in detail.
5.Small intestinal epiploic foramen entrapment in a seven-month pregnant Thoroughbred mare: a case report

A seven-month pregnant four-year-old Thoroughbred mare with colic weighing 600 kg was referred to the Jeju National University Equine Hospital. A physical examination and ultrasound suggested epiploic foramen entrapment. The patient underwent ileum resection and end-to-side jejunocecostomy. After surgery, the horse showed a consistent pain when introduced to feeding. A repeat laparotomy was performed to enlarge the stoma size with side-to-side jejunocecostomy. The repeat laparotomy was successful, and the mare gave birth uneventfully. This report describes a case of small intestinal epiploic foramen entrapment and the clinical outcomes of the 2 consecutive laparotomies a Thoroughbred mare in late gestation.
6.Computed tomographic features of the temporomandibular joint in 10 Jeju horses

Background:
The equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has a complex anatomical structure that makes diagnosis of TMJ disorders difficult. Computed tomography (CT) is now available in equine medicine; hence, TMJ evaluation has become more convenient.
Objectives:
The objectives of this study were to describe the CT features of the TMJ in Jeju horses and to compare these features with those of Thoroughbreds.
Methods:
In this report, the TMJs of 10 Jeju horses (mean age: 4.5 ± 1.9 yr; mean body weight: 282.6 ± 40.3 kg) and 6 Thoroughbreds (mean age: 7.3 ± 1.6 yr; mean body weight: 479.7 ± 44.0 kg) were examined using CT. After CT scanning, the Hounsfield units (HU) and height to width ratio (H:W) of the mandibular condyle were measured.
Results:
The mean H:W in Jeju horses was significantly lower than that in Thoroughbreds.The mean HU in Jeju horses was lower than that in Thoroughbreds; however, the difference was not significant. The most frequent CT finding was an irregular medial margin of the mandibular condyle in both breeds.
Conclusions
In this study, the shape of the mandibular condyle in Jeju horses was flatter than that in Thoroughbreds. This report could be useful in evaluating the TMJ in Jeju horses. Moreover, CT could be a pragmatic choice for the examination of the TMJ in horses.
