1.Association between Obesity and Melanoma Risk in an Asian Population: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Purpose:
Previous studies from mostly Western populations have suggested possible associations between obesity and melanoma risk. This study aimed to investigate associations between obesity status and melanoma using a nationwide cohort of Koreans.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 4,441,403 adults who received a national health examination in 2012 were included from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, and followed until December 31, 2022. Obesity status was defined based on the body mass index at the baseline health examination. Cox proportional hazards analyses were performed to evaluate associations between obesity status and incident melanoma, with adjustment for confounders. Stratified analyses were performed by sex and menopausal status (in women).
Results:
Overall, melanoma risk increased according to obesity status (p for trend=0.024); adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for melanoma risk were 0.766 (0.438–1.340) in underweight; 1.292 (1.072–1.557) in overweight; 1.202 (1.002–1.442) in obesity; and 1.191 (0.798–1.778) in severe obesity compared to normal weight (reference). In stratified analyses, similar trends to those of the overall study population were observed among men and premenopausal women (p for trend=0.052 in men and 0.036 in premenopausal women). Among premenopausal women, the risk of melanoma increased linearly with obesity status. Meanwhile, among postmenopausal women, melanoma risk showed no significant difference or trend according to obesity status.
Conclusion
Overweight and obesity were associated with increased risk of melanoma in a population-based cohort of Koreans. Obese individuals, especially men and premenopausal women, may require more thorough prevention and screening strategies for melanoma.
2.Resting-State Electroencephalography as a Neurophysiological Marker Complementing Clinician-Rated Dementia Severity

Objective:
Reliable staging of dementia is critical for both clinical practice and research. Although the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) is widely used to assess dementia severity, it is subject to subjectivity and inter-rater variability. Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) may provide objective neurophysiological information associated with clinical severity.
Methods:
Resting-state EEG data from 600 adults aged ≥60 years in Korea were analyzed. Relative power spectral density was extracted from 19 electrodes across six frequency bands. Ordinal logistic regression and linear regression analyses exam-ined associations between resting-state EEG spectral features and CDR Global and CDR Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) scores. All models adjusted for age, sex, education, and depressive symptoms, with false-discovery-rate correction.
Results:
Ordinal logistic regression demonstrated that higher resting-state theta-band EEG power was significantly associatedwith greater CDR Global severity, particularly in frontal, temporal, central, and parietal regions. Consistently, linear regressionanalyses revealed that higher CDR-SB scores were associated with increased theta in widespread cortical areas. No significantassociations were observed in other frequency bands.
Conclusion
EEG spectral slowing—marked by elevated theta power—was consistently related to CDR-defined dementia se-verity. Resting-state EEG can potentially serve as an objective neurophysiological correlate that informs clinician-rated staging and enhances the reliability of dementia severity assessment.
3.A three-year retrospective study of pediatric and adolescent oral and maxillofacial trauma and infections at emergency department in a tertiary care medical hospital

Objectives:
Pediatric and adolescent oral and maxillofacial trauma and infections differ significantly from adults in anatomy, development, and immunity, making diagnosis and treatment challenging. This study retrospectively evaluated the etiology, clinical features, and management of oral and maxillofacial trauma and infections among patients aged 3 to 15 years.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective review was conducted of 824 pediatric and adolescent patients who presented to the emergency department of Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital from January 2022 to December 2024. Patients were categorized based on chief complaints into trauma, infection, or other conditions. Primary analyses focused on trauma and infections, and secondary analyses included etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes.
Results:
Trauma accounted for 742 cases (90.0%) and infections for 44 cases (5.3%). Boys (65.7%) outnumbered girls (34.3%), and school-aged children (6-11 years) were most frequently affected (56.5%). Lacerations (49.2%) and abrasions (34.1%) were the most common traumas, followed by dental trauma (31.0%) and facial fractures (5.0%). Among fractures, the mandibular condyle (35.1%) was most commonly involved. Most fractures were managed non-surgically (54.0%), while 30.0% required surgery. Infections were mainly odontogenic abscesses (44.7%), cellulitis (36.4%), and sialadenitis (15.9%). Abscesses were treated with incision and drainage (57.1%) or antibiotics (19.1%), with 23.8% requiring hospitalization.
Conclusion
Trauma was the most frequent emergency cause in pediatric and adolescent patients, particularly among school-aged boys. Most cases were successfully managed with appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are essential for favorable outcomes in pediatric maxillofacial emergencies.
4.Mandibular body osteotomy using 3-dimensional simulation in a patient with severe open bite due to burn trauma

Facial burns in infant can disrupt maxillofacial growth, leading to deformities and functional impairments. These burns, often occurring in children aged 8–13 months, may result in malocclusion and facial asymmetry caused by altered neuromuscular development. The historical principles of maxillofacial burn management have been established by pioneers such as Kazanjian and Hyslop. In 1849, Simon P. Hullihen performed the first documented orthognathic surgery for a burn-induced deformity on a young patient with mandibular prognathism. In the present study we discuss a similar case involving a 10-year follow-up, demonstrating the use of virtual surgical simulation in evaluating and treating maxillofacial deformities resulting from electrical burns in children.
5.Oral Health Status of Korean Students and Associated Fasting Plasma Glucose in Overweight/Obese Individuals

This study aimed to evaluate the current oral health status of Korean children and adolescents and investigate the correlation between fasting plasma glucose levels and oral health in individuals with overweight and obesity. A total of 121,682 participants were selected from the Survey of School Health Examination data provided by the Ministry of Education over the last 5 years to assess recent oral health status and related factors. Among them, 18,105 students with overweight or obesity who had their fasting plasma glucose levels measured were assessed for blood glucose-related analysis. Based on fasting blood glucose levels, the participants were categorized into normal, impaired fasting glucose, and diabetes groups. The associations of these groups with dental caries, oral hygiene, and periodontal diseases were investigated. There were significant associations between demographic factors, health-related behaviors, and blood glucose levels with oral health. Increased fasting blood glucose levels were associated with poor oral health. These results suggest that glycemic management is important in enhancing the oral health of overweight and obese children and adolescents.

7.Characteristics of impacted mandibular third molar-related lesions

Objectives:
This study identifies factors for differential diagnosis among lesions by retrospectively comparing panoramic and cone-beam computed tomography images and analyzing the characteristics of lesions associated with impacted mandibular third molars (IMTs).
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective cohort study was conducted in patients who simultaneously underwent IMT extraction surgery and related benign tumor resection or cyst enucleation at our institution from 2017 to 2021. To compare the characteristics of each group, two comparative analyses were conducted. The first comparison considered the most frequently observed lesions associated with IMTs: dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and ameloblastoma. The second comparison involved placing dentigerous cysts, which have a relatively low recurrence rate, into group A and placing OKC, ameloblastoma, and odontogenic myxoma, which have high recurrence rates, into group B.
Results:
Significant differences in the size of the lesion were found in the order of ameloblastoma, OKC, and dentigerous cyst (P<0.05). The buccolingual width of ameloblastoma differed significantly from that of the other groups, with no significant difference observed between the OKCs and dentigerous cysts (P=0.083).
Conclusion
Patient age and lesion size differed significantly among lesion types associated with IMTs, with younger age and larger lesions for OKCs and odontogenic tumors. OKCs are likely to have a larger mesiodistal width than dentigerous cysts. The buccolingual width of ameloblastomas was larger than those of dentigerous cysts and OKCs.

9.Factors associated with malnutrition in demented and non-demented elderly residing in the community of Korea: a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study

Objectives:
This study aimed to investigate and compare factors associated with malnutrition according to the presence or absence of dementia in community-dwelling elderly people.
Methods:
Needs assessment data from 311 long-term care insurance (LTCI) recipients (dementia group 203; non-dementia group 108) that participated in the second pilot program of the integrated care model in community care settings under the Korean LTCI system were used. Descriptive statistical analysis, independent t-test, and analysis of variance were conducted on the sociodemographic characteristics, health and functional status, and nutritional status of the dementia and non-dementia groups. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with malnutrition in the dementia and non-dementia groups.
Results:
Malnutrition occurred in 33.5% and 26.9% of participants in the dementia and non-dementia groups, respectively. In the dementia group, living with family rather than living alone (odds ratio [OR]: 3.81; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.50–9.66; P = 0.031), increase in Korean Activities of Daily Living (K-ADL) score (OR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.17–1.55; P < 0.001), and increase in the Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire score (OR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.01–1.03; P = 0.005) were associated with a higher risk of malnutrition. In the non-dementia group, the risk of malnutrition increased as the K-ADL score increased (OR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.04–1.39; P = 0.011) and in the depressed group (OR: 2.84; 95% CI: 1.04–7.74; P = 0.042).
Conclusions
The study results confirmed the necessity of nutritional management for community-dwelling LTCI recipients. When developing a nutritional management program, considering the differences in factors related to malnutrition between the dementia and non-dementia groups is important. This study proposes policies for improving the LTCI system in terms of nutritional management and the utilization of community resources.
10.Dupilumab therapy in a 12-year-old boy with Kimura disease, allergic rhinitis, and IgG3 deficiency

Kimura disease is characterized by painless subcutaneous masses, usually in the head and neck area as well as serum/tissue eosinophilia and elevated serum IgE levels. Various treatment methods, such as surgical excision, corticosteroids, and radiotherapy, have been suggested, but none of these are considered standard therapy due to high recurrence rates. Dupilumab is a human monoclonal antibody that binds to the alpha subunit of IL-4 receptor for IL-4 and IL-13 and inhibits T helper 2 (Th2) response, which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and nasal polyps. Kimura disease has also been shown to increase CD4+Th2 cells and Th2 cytokines. We report a case of a 12-year-old boy who had subcutaneous neck and orbital masses of Kimura disease concurrent with allergic rhinitis, decreased lung function, and IgG subclass deficiency. The masses did not improve with omalizumab or immunomodulatory agents, but resolved with dupilumab. Considering potential side effects of steroids or immunosuppressant agents, dupilumab may be an option for initial treatment with Kimura diseases in children.
