1.Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma of the Larynx: A Case Report
Korean Journal of Head and Neck Oncology 2025;41(1):1-4
Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare and potentially aggressive soft tissue malignancy that primarily affects teenagers and young adults. It is generally associated with a high incidence of metastasis early in the disease course, with brain metastases occurring more frequently than in other high-grade sarcomas. ASPS most commonly arises in the extremities, particularly the lower limbs, while approximately one-fourth of cases occur in the head and neck region, with typical sites including the tongue and orbit, although involvement of the larynx is very rare. In this case report, we present a rare case of ASPS located in the larynx, accompanied by a review of the literature. This case emphasizes that ASPS should be considered in the differential diagnosis when evaluating solid and/or vascular laryngeal masses in the young population, and underscores the necessity of early surgical intervention.

Background:
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to a group of risk factors that cause health problems, such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia. MetS is characterized by insulin resistance, which leads to abnormal insulin sensitivity. Cirsium japonicum var. maackii (CJ) is perennial herbaceous species found in Asia that exhibits antioxidant, antidiabetic, antitumor, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, we aimed to measure the effects of CJ on MetS by improving insulin resistance in a db/db type 2 diabetes mouse model. After administrating CJ extract (CJE) for db/db mouse for 6 weeks, we measured with the evaluation of Insulin resistance, lipid profiles, histological analysis of liver, damage of liver and kideny.
Results:
The results showed that CJE was effective in reducing body weight and fat mas and showed a positive effect on lowering blood glucose and improving insulin sensitivity. CJE improved dyslipidemia by increasing serum-HDL levels and decreasing serum-LDL levels. In addition, CJE reduced liver and kidney damage in histological analysis.
Conclusions
These results demonstrate the anti-diabetic effects of CJE and suggest its potential for improving MetS.Therefore, CJE may have potential values as a functional food material for managing MetS.

Nutrition Research and Practice 2024;18(3):309-324
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
This study evaluated the beneficial effects of an ethanol extract of Boswellia serrata gum resin (FJH-UBS) in osteoporosis.MATERIALS/METHODS: MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells and RAW 264.7 osteoclastic cells were treated with FJH-UBS. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineralization, collagen synthesis, osteocalcin content, and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) and Osterix expression were measured in MC3T3-E1 cells. The actin ring structures, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity, and the nuclear factor of activator T-cells, cytoplasm 1 (NFATc1) expression were evaluated in RAW 264.7 cells. Ovariectomized ICR mice were orally administered FJH-UBS for eight weeks. The bone mineral density (BMD) and the serum levels of osteocalcin, procollagen 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), osteoprotegerin, and TRAP 5b were analyzed.
RESULTS:
FJH-UBS increased the ALP activity, collagen, osteocalcin, mineralization, and RUNX2 and osterix expression in MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells, whereas it decreased the TRAP activity, actin ring structures, and NFATc1 expression in RAW 264.7 osteoclastic cells. In ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis mice, FJH-UBS positively restored all of the changes in the bone metabolism biomarkers (BMD, osteocalcin, P1NP, osteoprotegerin, and TRAP 5b) caused by the ovariectomy.
CONCLUSION
FJH-UBS has anti-osteoporotic activity by promoting osteoblast activity and inhibiting osteoclast activity in vitro and in vivo, suggesting that FJH-UBS is a potential functional food ingredient for osteoporosis.
