Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of predicting final adult height (FAH) in Korean girls with central precocious puberty (CPP) using artificial intelligence (AI)-derived bone age assessments integrated into the Bayley–Pinneau (BP) or Korean National Growth Chart (KGC) prediction models.
Materials and Methods:
This single-center, retrospective study included 122 Korean girls with CPP who received gonadotropinreleasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) treatment for at least two years between January 2000 and November 2022. We assessed bone age and predicted adult height at the initiation and completion of GnRHa treatment. We used three bone age assessment methods: human expert assessment based on the Greulich-Pyle (GP) atlas (Human-GP), AI-derived GP (AI-GP), and AI-weighted GP scoring (AI-GPw). We calculated predicted adult heights (PAHs) using both the BP and KGC models, generating 12 PAH estimates per patient (2 time points x 3 bone-age methods x 2 height-prediction models). We assessed prediction accuracy and agreement with FAH using linear regression analysis and Bland–Altman plots and performed multivariable analysis to identify significant predictors of FAH.
Results:
Human-GP, AI-GP, and AI-GPw demonstrated comparable overall performance in predicting FAH (R 2 : 0.470–0.646 and 0.691–0.822 for treatment initiation and completion, respectively). AI-GPw combined with BP yielded slightly better point estimates but showed no statistically significant differences. At both time points, the BP model demonstrated consistently narrower 95% limits of agreement (LoA) than the KGC model. Multivariable analysis identified AI-GPw-BP and height percentile score as significant predictors of FAH at both time points; mid-parental height was significant only at treatment initiation.
Conclusion
Human-GP, AI-GP, and AI-GPw demonstrated comparable accuracy in predicting FAH. The BP model demonstrated consistently narrower 95% LoA than did the KGC model. AI-GPw-BP was an independent predictor of FAH. These findings support the clinical utility of AI-derived bone age assessments for individualized FAH prediction in patients with CPP.

OBJECTIVES:
This study aimed to compare maternal outcomes and the home environment between non‑vulnerable families with children under 2 receiving universal home visiting services and vulnerable families receiving sustained home visiting services.
METHODS:
This study was conducted in Seoul, Korea, where the country’s first nurse‑led early childhood home visiting program was introduced. A total of 551 mother‑child dyads participated in cross‑sectional surveys conducted at various child ages (6±2 weeks, 6±1 months, 12±1 months, and 24±1 months). Universal home visiting services were provided within six weeks postpartum to non‑vulnerable families, while vulnerable families received sustained services consisting of 25 visits over 24 months. Maternal knowledge of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and childcare, maternal distress, and the Korean Infant‑Toddler Home Observation for Measurement of Environment (K‑IT‑HOME) were assessed.
RESULTS:
Overall, the universal home visitation group demonstrated higher levels of maternal knowledge regarding SIDS and childcare compared to the sustained home visitation group (all p-values <0.05), while the sustained home visitation group reported higher levels of maternal distress (p<0.001). The total K‑IT‑HOME score was 1.47 points higher in the universal home visitation group than in the sustained home visitation group (p<0.001). No significant differences were observed in the acceptance, organization, or involvement subscales of the K‑IT‑HOME (all p-values >0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrated that disparities in maternal outcomes and home environments persisted in early childhood between the sustained and universal home visitation groups.

Hangovers from alcohol consumption cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, and fatigue, disrupting daily activities and overall well-being. Over time, they can also lead to inflammation and oxidative stress. Effective hangover relief alleviates symptoms, prevents dehydration, and replenishes energy needed for daily tasks. Natural foods considered high in antioxidants and antiinflammatory properties may aid in the hepatic breakdown of alcohol. The study aims to investigate the impact of glutathione or its enriched yeast extract, which is recognized for its antioxidant characteristics, on alcohol metabolism and alleviating hangovers in a rat model exposed to binge drinking. In this study, glutathione and its enriched yeast extract controlled hangover behaviour patterns, including locomotor activity. Additionally, it enhanced the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) following ethanol ingestion (3 g/kg). Further, the incorporation of glutathione led to an increase in the expression of antioxidant enzymes, such as SOD and catalase, by activating the nuclear erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway. This activation reduced the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde. Next, glutathione modulated the activity of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) and the protein expressions of Bax and Bcl2. Besides, in vitro and in vivo investigations with glutathione demonstrated a regulating effect on the pan-s-glutathionylation and its associated protein expression, glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1), glutathione-S-transferase Pi (GST-π), and glutathione reductase (GR). Together, these findings suggest that glutathione or its enriched yeast extract as a beneficial dietary supplement for alleviating hangover symptoms by enhancing alcohol metabolism and its associated Nrf2/Keap1 signalings.

Korean Journal of Blood Transfusion 2023;34(1):12-20
Background:
ABO genotyping is performed when the exact ABO blood type cannot be determined through serological testing. Conventionally, only exons 6 and 7 of the ABO gene have been analyzed, but our laboratory introduced additional analysis of the proximal promoter and intron 1 +5.8 kb site. Accordingly, we report the clinical use of ABO genotyping and distribution of the ABO subgroups based on our experience over the past 5 years.
Methods:
A total of 265 samples tested at the Samsung Medical Center from August 2017 to July 2022 were retrospectively analyzed at their request. Serological ABO blood typing and direct sequencing of exons 6 and 7 were performed on all samples, and additional analysis of the regulatory region of the ABO gene was performed on 17 samples. Since some of the ABO discrepant cases revealed multiple causes, a total of 339 causes among 238 ABO discrepant cases were analyzed.
Results:
Among the total of 265 samples, 89.8% (238/265) exhibited ABO discrepancies. Weak red cell reactivity (51.6%, 175/339) was the most common cause of ABO discrepancy, followed by extra serum reactivity (35.7%, 121/339). Among the samples, 40.8% (108/265) were identified as ABO subgroups. Among the 108 ABO subgroup alleles, cisAB.01 in exons 6 and 7 accounted for 82 cases (75.9%, 82/108), and two g.10925C>T mutations in intron 1 +5.8 kb were identified.
Conclusion
Through our recent experience of the last 5 years of ABO genotyping, we elucidated the cause of ABO discrepancies and ABO subgroup alleles. The extended sequencing of the regulatory region of the ABO gene was helpful for further understanding the ABO discrepancy caused by weak red cell reactivity. (Korean J Blood Transfus 2023;34:12-20)

Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine 2023;47(1):4-10
Spinal cord injury (SCI) has been recognized as a medically complex and life-disrupting condition. As the aging of the population accelerates, the trend of SCI has changed. This review aimed to provide comprehensive statistics and recent epidemiological changes in SCI and rehabilitation in Korea. All three insurance databases (National Health Insurance Service [NHIS], automobile insurance [AUI], and industrial accident compensation insurance [IACI]) were considered. These nationwide databases provide data on the current trends in term of incidence, etiology, and rehabilitation of SCI. Traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) was more frequent among the elderly in the NHIS compared to working age individuals in the AUI and IACI. In all three trauma-related insurance databases, male with TSCI outnumbered female. TSCI incidence per year was approximately 17 times higher among males than females, on average, in IACI. In all three insurances, the cervical level of TSCI was the most frequent. Although the ratio of SCI patients receiving rehabilitation treatment at primary and secondary hospitals increased for nine years, the increase in training on activities of daily living (ADL training) was found to be relatively small. This review provides a broader and comprehensive understanding of the incidence, etiology, and rehabilitation treatment of SCI in Korea.
