OBJECTIVE To explore the molecular characteristics of small colony variants(SCVs)of Staphylococcus aureus isolates so as to provide theoretical bases for clinical control of the persistent and recurrent infections in-duced by the SCVs.METHODS The clinical blood specimens that were collected from the First Affiliated Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine University of Guangzhou were cultured to acquire 1 strain of SCV S.aureus S2.The colonial morphology, growth rate,catalase,plasma-coagulase,production capability of biofilm and antimi-crobial susceptibility of the strain SCVs were observed, the growth curve and autolysis curve were drawn, the whole genome sequencing was performed for the S2,the phylogenetic evolution of the genome and the single nu-cleotide polymorphism(SNP)were analyzed.RESULTS The S2 was identified as S.aureus, with the catalase and plasma-coagulase tested positive. The strain was resistant to various types of antibiotics, including macrolides like erythromycin and azithromycin, fluroquinolones such as levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, and penicillin. The forma-tion of pigment was reduced, the formation of hemolytic rings was low;the growth rate of the strain was slower than that of ATCC 25923(quality control strain)and ZC1(the normal control strain),the autolytic activity of the strain was higher than that of the ATCC 25923 and ZC1,and the biofilm production of the strain was remarkably less than that of the ATCC 29213(P<0.05).The whole genome sequencing demonstrated that the molecular typ-ing of the S2 was ST239-t030 clone, which harbored a variety of drug resistance genes and virulence genes, and the menB gene had missense mutation.CONCLUSION The formation of SCVs may be associated with the inhibited synthesis of menadione caused by the missense mutation of menB gene.

The “Technical Guideline for Epidemic Prevention and Control Disinfection in Large-Scale Events”(hereinafter referred to as “the Guideline”), organized and compiled by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, was officially released in April 2024. This guideline aims to ensure the effective implementation of large-scale group activities, mitigate the impact of infectious disease outbreaks on such events, and maintain hygiene and safety standards at event venues. During the compilation process, data were systematically collected in alignment with epidemic prevention requirements and disinfection principles, incorporating research findings from domestic and international disinfection practices. Information was gathered through field investigations, expert consultations in epidemiology and disinfection, and roundtable discussions with representatives from organizations responsible for disinfection operations at large-scale events, thereby ensuring the scientific rigor and practical applicability of the content. The Guideline provides comprehensive technical disinfection guidance for relevant authorities and event organizers, addressing critical aspects such as disinfection protocols, operational principles, emergency response strategies, and technical specifications. By standardizing hygiene assurance measures for large-scale events, including considerations of participant demographics, venue characteristics, and event scale, the guideline establishes a framework to proactively minimize the risk of infectious disease transmission.

Korean Journal of Radiology 2024;25(3):289-300
Objective:
To prospectively evaluate the outcomes of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in tertiary hyperparathyroidism (THPT).
Materials and Methods:
Patients with THPT underwent RFA between September 2017 and January 2022. Laboratory parameters, including serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels, were monitored for 48 months after RFA and compared with the levels at baseline. Complications related to RFA and changes in hyperparathyroidism-related clinical symptoms were recorded before and after RFA.
Results:
A total of 42 patients with THPT were recruited for this study. Ultimately, 36 patients with renal failure and 2 patients who underwent successful renal transplantation (male:female, 17:21; median age, 54.5 years) were enrolled. The follow-up time was 21.5 ± 19.0 months in the 36 patients with renal failure. In these 36 patients, iPTH levels were significantly decreased to 261.1 pg/mL at 48 months compared with the baseline value of 1284.9 pg/mL (P = 0.012). Persistent hyperparathyroidism, defined as iPTH levels maintained at > 585.0 pg/mL for 6 months after treatment, occurred in 4.0% of patients (1/25). Recurrent hyperparathyroidism, defined as iPTH levels > 585.0 pg/mL after 6 months, were 4.0% (1/25) and 0.0% (0/9) at 6 months and 4 years after treatment, respectively. In two patients with THPT after successful renal transplantation, iPTH decreased from the baseline value of 242.5 and 115.9 pg/mL to 171.0 and 62.0 pg/mL at 6 months after treatment. All complications resolved within 6 months of ablation without medical intervention, except in 10.5% (4/38) patients with permanent hypocalcemia. The overall symptom recovery rate was 58.8% (10/17). The severity scores for bone pain, arthralgia, and itchy skin associated with hyperparathyroidism improved after treatment (P < 0.05).
Conclusion
US-guided RFA is an effective and safe alternative to surgery in the treatment of patients with TPTH and improves hyperparathyroidism-related clinical symptoms. Keywords: Ultrasound; Radiofrequency ablation; Te

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2024;37(12):1373-1384
OBJECTIVE:
This study investigated the association between household chemical use and respiratory disease (RD) in older Chinese adults.
METHODS:
The data were from the 2018 China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS) database, which included 12,866 participants aged ≥ 65 years. The prevalence of RD was based on self-reported medical history, and patients were divided into diseased and non-diseased groups. The frequency of household chemical usage was divided into four categories, and a total score for eight household chemical usage categories was constructed. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between the frequency of household chemical use and RD, and a restricted cubic spline was used to determine the dose-response association.
RESULT:
After adjusting for all covariates, regular use of repellents [odds ratios ( OR) = 1.28, 95% CI 1.06-1.55] and oil removers ( OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.03-1.58) were associated with RD. There was a dose-response association between the total score of household chemicals usage and RD risk ( P non-linearity > 0.05, P for trend < 0.01). Using patients with the total score below 9 as a reference, the OR for patients with the total score ranging from 25 to 32 is 2.33 (95% CI 1.25-4.09).
CONCLUSION
Regular use of repellents and oil removers increased the risk of RD, and the dose-dependent relationship was also observed.
