International Eye Science 2026;26(3):534-539
AIM: To investigate the clinical efficacy of seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation combined with bandage soft contact lens in the treatment of pterygium.METHODS: A retrospective collection was conducted on patients with pterygium admitted to the hospital from January 2020 to January 2025. They were divided into two groups according to different treatment methods. Group A received seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation surgery combined with bandage soft contact lens, while group B received simple seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation surgery. The complete repair and healing of corneal epithelium, ocular comfort and corneal refractive status at different time points after surgery were compared between the two groups, and the occurrence of postoperative complications in the two groups was recorded.RESULTS: This study included 120 cases(120 eyes)of patients with pterygium, including 60 cases(60 eyes)in the group A and 60 cases(60 eyes)in the group B. Group A had an age of 51.88±5.22 years, with 33 males and 27 females. Group B had an age of 52.48±6.00 years, with 30 males and 30 females. The complete repair and healing rate of corneal epithelium in the group A was higher than that in the group B at 1 and 2 wk after surgery(all P<0.05). At 1 and 2 wk after surgery, the scores of the eye comfort assessment table in both groups decreased compared to the day of surgery, and the group A was lower than the group B at all time points(all P<0.05). At 1 and 3 mo after surgery, the surface asymmetry index(SAI), corneal astigmatism(CA), and corneal surface regularity index(SRI)of the corneal topography in both groups decreased compared to preoperative values, and the group A was lower than the group B at all time points(all P<0.05). The incidence of postoperative complications in the group A was slightly lower than that in the group B, but the difference was not statistically significant(all P>0.05).CONCLUSION: The seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation surgery combined with bandage soft contact lens treatment can promote postoperative corneal epithelial healing in patients with pterygium, increase short-term eye comfort after surgery, improve short-term corneal refractive status after surgery, and reduce the occurrence of postoperative complications to a certain extent.

Objective To investigate the value of preoperative clinical data and computed tomography angiography (CTA) data in predicting perioperative mortality risk in patients with acute aortic dissection (AAD), and to construct a Nomogram prediction model. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on AAD patients treated at Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University from February 2013 to July 2023. Patients who died during the perioperative period were included in the death group, and those who improved during the same period were randomly selected as the non-death group using a random number table method. The first CTA data and preoperative clinical data within the perioperative period of the two groups were collected, and related risk factors were analyzed to screen out independent predictive factors for perioperative death. The Nomogram prediction model for perioperative mortality risk in AAD patients was constructed using the screened independent predictive factors, and the effect of the Nomogram was evaluated by calibration curves and area under the curve (AUC). Results A total of 270 AAD patients were included. There were 60 patients in the death group, including 42 males and 18 females with an average age of (56.89±13.42) years. There were 210 patients in the non-death group, including 163 males and 47 females with an average age of (56.15±13.77) years. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that type A AAD [OR=4.589, 95%CI (2.273, 9.267), P<0.001], irregular tear morphology [OR=2.054, 95%CI (1.025, 4.117), P=0.042], decreased hemoglobin [OR=0.983, 95%CI (0.971, 0.995), P=0.007], increased uric acid [OR=1.003, 95%CI (1.001, 1.005), P=0.004], and increased aspartate aminotransferase [OR=1.003, 95%CI (1.000, 1.006), P=0.035] were independent risk factors for perioperative death in AAD patients. The Nomogram prediction model constructed using the above risk factors had an AUC of 0.790 for predicting perioperative death, indicating good predictive performance. Conclusion Type A AAD, irregular tear morphology, decreased hemoglobin, increased uric acid, and increased aspartate aminotransferase are independent predictive factors for perioperative death in AAD patients. The Nomogram prediction model constructed using these factors can help assess the perioperative mortality risk of AAD patients.

Objective:
To explore the nonlinear dynamic effects of social capital, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and depressive symptoms on suicidal behavior among vocational high school students, so as to provide theoretical basis and practical references for formulating suicide prevention strategies.
Methods:
A convenience sampling method was employed to include 668 students from a vocational high school from Wuhan in March 2023. Social capital was used as the asymmetry variable, while ACEs and depressive symptoms were used as bifurcation variables, a cusp catastrophe model was constructed to analyze the nonlinear changes in suicidal behavior among vocational high school students, and its fit was compared with linear and Logistic regression models.
Results:
Among students in the health vocational high school in Wuhan, only suicidal ideation accounted for 8.5%, only suicide attempt for 18.6%, neither accounted for 31.9%, and both for 41.0%. Gender, left behind experience, family economic status, parental parenting styles, depressive symptoms, social capital, and ACEs were all related factors influencing suicidal behavior among vocational high school students ( χ 2/H=19.03, 13.33, 21.11, 46.70, 144.38, 24.61, 118.77, all P <0.05). Violin plots showed a bimodal distribution of suicidal behavior, indicating nonlinear variation characteristics. The cusp catastrophe model results showed that social capital was negatively correlated with suicidal behavior, but the relationship was bifurcated by ACEs ( α social capital = -0.006 , β ACEs =0.075) and depressive symptoms ( α social capital =-0.013, β depressive =0.028) (all P <0.05). When both ACEs and depressive symptoms coexisted, the impact of ACEs was stronger ( β ACEs =0.077, β depressive =0.014) (both P <0.05). The cusp catastrophe model fitted ( R 2=0.886, 0.881, 0.882) better than the linear ( R 2=0.258, 0.219, 0.258) and Logistic regression models ( R 2= 0.242, 0.211 , 0.176). Gender stratified analysis results showed that bifurcation effect of ACEs was stronger in males than in females( β boys =0.224, β girls =0.086); in females, both ACEs and depressive symptoms had a bifurcation effect, with the former showing a stronger effect ( β ACEs =0.062, β depressive =0.015) (all P <0.05).
Conclusions
Suicidal behavior among vocational high school students exhibits nonlinear characteristics. Improving social capital to reducing ACEs and depressive symptoms may contribute to decreasing adolescent suicidal behaviors.

Objective To investigate whether aberrant DNA methylation of ubiquinol-cytochrome C reductase core protein 1(UQCRC1)is related to cognitive impairment caused by neonatal sevoflurane exposure. Methods A total of 94 SPF C57 mice of either sex, aged 6 d,and weighing 4~6 g,were randomly divided into 7 groups:control group(Con,n=6),sevoflurane-6 and-24 h exposure groups(Sev-6 and-24 h,n=6),control+DMSO group(Con+DMSO,n=19),control+5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine(5-AZA,methylation inhibitor)group(Con+5-AZA,n=19),sevoflurane+DMSO group(Sev+DMSO group,n=19),and sevoflurane+5-AZA group(Sev+5-AZA group,n=19).From 6 to 8 d after birth, the mice of the Sev-6 and-24 h exposure groups were exposed to 3%sevoflurane daily(with 97%oxygen,2 L/min,2 h per day),while those from the Con groups were given exposure of 100%oxygen(2 L/min,2 h per day). For the mice of the 5-AZA and DMSO groups,1 mg/kg of 5-AZA or an equal volume of DMSO was injected intraperitoneally 30 min before daily exposure. In 6 and 24 h after the last exposure to sevoflurane,6 mice from the Con,Sev-6 h,and Sev-24 h groups were euthanized for biochemical analysis, and in 24 h post-exposure,6 mice from the Con+DMSO,Con+5-AZA,Sev+DMSO,and Sev+5-AZA groups were randomly selected for biochemical analysis, while another 3 mice from above each group were also randomly selected for morphological analysis. The remaining 10 mice in these groups underwent behavioral testing(open field test, novel object test, and Y-maze test)at 30~33 d after birth to assess cognitive function, and were euthanized in 24 h after the final behavioral test.RT-qPCR and Western blotting were used to detect the hippocampal expression of UQCRC1,DNA methyltransferases(Dnmts),and methyl CpG binding protein 2(Mecp2)at mRNA and protein levels, respectively.Immunofluorescence assay was employed to observe the distribution and expression of UQCRC1 in the hippocampus.Bisulfite sequencing PCR(BSP)was applied to measure the methylation in the UQCRC1 promoter region. Results Compared with the Con group, the mRNA and protein levels of UQCRC1 were down-regulated(P<0.05),and the mRNA level of Dnmts was up-regulated(P<0.05)in both the Sev-6 h and Sev-24 h exposure groups, while the methylation level in the UQCRC1 promoter region was enhanced in the Sev-24 h exposure group(P<0.05).Additionally,the Sev+5-AZA group had obviously increased mRNA and protein levels of UQCRC1(P<0.05),and notable improvement in cognitive impairment(P<0.05)when compared with the Sev+DMSO group. Conclusion Hypermethylation of UQCRC1 promoter region and thus down-regulating its mRNA and protein expression might be the main mechanism by which repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposure induces cognitive impairment later in life.

Ultrasound technology has been applied in the biomedical field, particularly in drug delivery and cell processing. In this study, the effects of different ultrasound power levels(40 W to 100 W)and time durations(1 min,5 min,or 5 min discontinuously)on the morphology of human red blood cells(hRBCs)membranes were systematically investigated using cryo-electron tomography(Cryo-ET).The hRBCs membranes were firstly subjected to ultrasound at power levels of 40 W and 60 W for 5 min each.Cryo-ET observations revealed minimal morphological changes in the hRBCs membranes following the 40 W treatment, with the membrane structure remaining relatively intact and only minor undulations appearing on the membrane surface. These undulations might result from the mild mechanical stress induced by ultrasound, which was insufficient to disrupt the overall membrane structure. At power of 60 W,the hRBCs membranes largely preserved their structural integrity. When the ultrasonic power was increased to 80 W,the structural damage to the hRBCs membranes became more severe.Cryo-ET images showed irregular ruptures and larger pores on the membrane surface, indicating a significant compromise in membrane integrity. At ultrasound power of 100 W,the hRBCs membranes were completely disrupted, resulting in the formation of numerous membrane fragments, and a complete loss of membrane continuity. To further explore the effects of ultrasound duration on erythrocyte membrane morphology, the ultrasonic power was fixed at 100 W and the impacts of varying treatment durations(1 min,5 min,and intermittent ultrasound)on the membrane structure were systematically investigated. After 1 min of ultrasonic treatment,Cryo-ET images showed minimal changes in erythrocyte membrane morphology.Although some small pores and undulations appeared on the membrane surface, the overall structure remained relatively intact. As the ultrasound duration extended to 5 min,the degree of membrane damage increased significantly.Cryo-ET images revealed extensive rupture and detachment of the membrane, with continuity being severely compromised. As to treatment alternating 1 min of ultrasound with 1 min of rest, for a total of 5 min of ultrasound exposure,Cryo-ET observations showed the integrity of the membrane-cytoskeleton attachment remained.Under intermittent ultrasound treatment, although some pores and ruptures were observed on the membrane surface, the overall structure remained more intact compared to continuous ultrasonic treatment. This preservation might be due to the intermittent treatment providing buffer periods for the membrane, allowing partial recovery after mechanical stress, thereby reducing the cumulative damage caused by continuous ultrasound. This work provided experimental basis for further understanding of mechanism of ultrasound induced change of cell membrane and cytoskeleton.

The single photon counting imaging detector based on microchannel plate(MCP)has the characteristics of high sensitivity and low dark count rate, and has been applied to the optical remote sensing detection of weak ultraviolet spectral signals in space. In this work,by using planar array single photon counting imaging detector as the detector,flat-field concave grating as the splitter, and electrodeless discharge lamp(EDL)as the excitation light source,a dispersion detection system suitable for hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry(HG-AFS)was developed. The wavelength calibration of the system was carried out,and the negative high pressure and EDL stability time of the planar array single photon counting imaging detector were analyzed and optimized. The characteristic emission spectral lines of As and Bi elements excited in the wavelength range of 180-320 nm were analyzed, and the scattering interference in the wavelength range of 257.3-306.7 nm was discussed. The results showed that the AFS dispersion detection system based on the planar array single photon counting imaging detector could detect and analyze the HG-AFS fluorescence signal initially, and the influence of scattering interference on the detection results was effectively avoided. The system had the advantages including simple structure,no refrigeration and temperature control,no moving parts and simultaneous measurement of multi-band.

Widespread utilization of glyphosate has led to environmental residues, posing potential threats to ecological systems and human health.Traditional methods for detection of glyphosate are limited by specialized equipment and operational techniques, resulting in inefficient responses. Therefore,it is urgent to develop a convenient, sensitive and accurate detection method for detection of glyphosate.Herein,a new naphthalenesulfonamide-based"Turn-on"fluorescent probe was synthesized using 2-chloroaniline and dansyl chloride as raw materials through a one-step process, which showed a good linear relationship between the glyphosate concentration in concentration range of 0.003-70 μmol/L and the fluorescence intensity(R2=0.995),with a detection limit of 2.73 nmol/L(S/N=3).Analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry(HRMS)were used to investigate the interaction mechanism between the fluorescent probe and glyphosate. The results indicated that a nucleophilic substitution reaction occurred between the probe and the secondary amine(—NH—)of glyphosate, inducing a photoinduced electron transfer(PET)effect which enhanced the fluorescence intensity by 11.2 times. The probe showed good anti-interference ability towards coexisting metal ions, anions and pesticides in water. When applied to determination of glyphosate in the samples such as tap water, river water(Xiangxi River Reservoir),soil, soybeans, and corn, the spiking recoveries ranged from 94.7%to 109.9%,demonstrating the high accuracy and broad applicability of this detection method.A portable test strip based on this fluorescent probe was developed for rapid semi-quantitative analysis of glyphosate. The developed method was rapid, sensitive, and portable, providing theoretical and technical support for on-site measurement of environmental contaminants.

Introducing fingerprint level 3 features(especially sweat pores)in fingerprint recognition can significantly improve the value of fingerprints. However, conventional fingerprint visualization methods suffer from issues such as poor stability and reproducibility, insufficient resolution, and feature masking in detecting level 3 features.Electrospun membrane has unique advantages in latent fingerprint(LFP)detection due to its excellent adsorption performance and high specific surface area, and thus its application potential in LFP visualization urgently need to be explored.A novel pore visualization method based on core-shell structured PAN-Flu/PVP composite nanofibrous membrane was proposed in this work.Specifically, the PAN-Flu/PVP composite nanofibrous membrane was prepared via coaxial electrospinning technology, with polyacrylonitrile(PAN)loaded with fluorescein(Flu)as the core and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)as the shell. The experimental results showed that the prepared PAN Flu/PVP composite nanofibrous membrane had a porous structure and excellent adsorption performance.Based on the water solubility of the outer shell PVP and the water induced fluorescence enhancement effect of the core Flu,high-resolution visualization of sweat pores could be achieved within 2 s.The optimization experiment showed that the best quality of sweat latent fingerprints was obtained when the Flu content was 4 mg/mL,the spinning time was 1 h,and the sweating time was 2 min.Through repeated fingerprinting and live fingerprint comparison experiment, the strong stability and high reproducibility of the as-produced membrane in displaying fingerprint sweat pores were finally verified. In summary, the development method could quickly, stably and accurately extract the spatial distribution and activity level of fingerprint sweat pores, which was of great significance for improving the utilization and value of fingerprints.
